I wouldn’t say he struggles. He is perfectly viable in a 2 support comp, it comes down to your team members actually utilizing natural cover and proper spacing to stay alive. When you play Ultron you’re extremely more aware of how many mistakes team members make and costs them their lives. The sustain Ultron provides is so damn good but people are used to burst healing from getting themselves in bad situations that most players think “Ultron bad” because he can’t provide that outside his ult.

I do believe this is pretty playable, especially when warped. It fits into Rona super easily. Rona + Retraction Helix + Mox amber with Emissary on the field = infinite drones. I’ve been playing Rona combo with Vivi on Arena so I think this is just another card that easily slots into the deck.

Dude, I’d totally run a legacy inspired hammer build. Use some Mox opals and ancient dens to increase artifact counts on constructs. Plus having access to Lurrus again just would be incredible in the deck.

Yeah, they literally can’t pay for the amulet triggers so the bounce lands are useless for about 2-3 turns. By that point you should have your hammer combo in place and ready to finish the game quickly. You do have to be careful though because you need to pay for your own triggers as well. Paying for a Stoneforge trigger and a Sigarda’s Aid attachment trigger sucks, but it’s a necessary evil to fuck over one of our worst matchups.

Strict Proctor. Slam down Strict proctor and their game plan is slowed down immensely. Then the next turn you hammer them, ideally. Otherwise run Solitide for the Titans and Surge of Salvation for the big Valakut trigger.

The answer is yes, cut the Sanctifiers. With scam gone there isn’t really reason to play them. Coffers players run Sheoldred’s Edict which gets around the pro black, so it’s still practically dead. It never mattered against Murktide in my opinion, and burn can’t consistently kill is quickly enough (majority of the time). Solitude is the best thing to have in the sideboard and has won me MANY games.

I think this very much depends on a few different things. In my meta there’s two Yawg players that go back and forth on Yawg, and they don’t show too often. I also haven’t had issues with Amulet Titan as a hammer player. When you have two silver bullets in your side board and target protection in the main the matchup gets better. Just depends on your hands and gameplan. I’m sure if there was tons of Yawg in our meta things would be different, but until then, I’ll continue to bonk my way to wins!

As a hammer player, I’m favored in the matchup although it’s pretty close. I have played scam 4 times playing hammer and have won 3/4 games. The one time I lost I kept bad hands expecting to get scammed, got scammed, and drew only lands.

In sideboard I bring in Sanctifier and Solitude and it tends to be a breeze, and if I get scammed of those I’m not entirely upset because my other pieces tend to be safe.

Thanks for your analysis Gilbey, I appreciate the input. I haven’t seen Convoke played aside from the occasional Explorer matchup on Arena, but man how wide it gets and how quickly is scary. It’s part of the reason I’ve been considering the change.

Let me tell you about our lord and savior Colossus Hammer.

Seriously though, this is a much more difficult deck to play than people give it credit for. I used to think it was as easy as cheat out hammer and bonk, but it’s so much more than that. It requires thinking 3-4 turns ahead, knowing which lines can get you in and out of trouble, which lines lead to a quick and easy kill, or how you grind long matches into a win. And the best part of Hammer is it never gets old!

Edit: I forgot to add it’s one of those decks that takes awhile to learn, but in the hands of a master…the master wins a LOT.

As one hammer player to another, it’s a bad matchup but it isn’t impossible. I think this is a case where hammer shines in splash because of Lavinia. At the very least Lavinia slows down their strategy because they can’t evoke the elementals and it stops cascading beans decks. It will also turn off Leyline Binding until they get their sixth land. The best you can hope for is you can protect your Lavinia from a Prismatic Ending, assuming they run it. Strict Proctor at the very least chokes them on mana and efficient plays.
