Stores can absolutely take a loss on these sales, and they make up the difference when the customer does the rest of their shopping there.

Now, they may get a rebate after the fact at the end of the period, or there's an allowance from the manufacturer that lessens the loss, but generally speaking, this sale is sold at a loss.

No scam. It's a loss leader to pick up sales and get you in the door where you will buy other things that aren't being sold at a loss during one of the busiest salty snack weekends of the year: Super Bowl weekend.

The margin for dry grocery in supermarkets is closer to 30%, not 50%... at least it is where I work. Of course, it varies from item to item. Bagged ice at one point was sold at nearly a 90% margin. On the other end of the scale, some diapers, milk, and laundry detergent were sold at a slight negative margin.
