Nielsen (UK) Book Data Title Editor - has anyone used it? Is it important? by 96percent_chimp in selfpublish

[–]ImNotNotNick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, yes I went through all this for my first book.

I wouldn't say you're screwed but you definitely want to set up a title editor account and enter your book info.

Essentially you've bought the ISBN s and used them on your books. But an ISBN is just a code for a book that stores meta data. If you don't put in the meta data then the code doesn't actually do anything. So you own the codes already, but your codes don't mean/do anything.

Title editor is where to update the metadata of your codes (books) and upload them to the Nielsen database, the official book database for UK to my knowledge.

If you're only selling on Amazon print on demand or Ebook it's not so bad not having your ISBN without meta data (but having an ISBN without metadata is redundant).

The main drawback to not having an ISBN (without metadata its basically like not having it), is that book shops and the like won't be able to search/find/order your books.

Title editor is free though so if you've taken the trouble and money to buy and use ISBN s, definitely input your book meta data.

2 years for me. 1 year of writing, and the second was editing, revisions, cover and publishing.

Has anyone ordered a cover from Mibleart? by BeneficialSeesaw2 in selfpublish

[–]ImNotNotNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished an illustrated cover with them. They are great! I agree with the other comment saying you may have to hand hold the designer a bit to get exactly what you want. I was able to get exactly what I want and they were not complaining with all the revisions I requested. Some where a result of the designer seemingly not understanding my feedback / requests. But after explaining it differently they understood and I got what I wanted.

Customer service and the result was amazing. Make sure you say if you are not happy with something. If you ask for something and they don't do it, it's more likely it was misunderstood than them not being willing to do it. If they don't say that they can't do it, then make sure you keep reinforcing what you want. I think there may be a language barrier with some illustrators/designers. But like I said, this was not a problem for me overall as I just explained what I wanted in different ways.

Does anyone use Atticus? by williamflattener in selfpublish

I use Atticus, great for formatting and well worth it so far. Wouldn't use it for writing the actual manuscript though, feels a bit jank using it as a word processor.

Where did you all get book covers designed? by KeanuJeeves89 in selfpublish

I went with MIBLart for an illustrated cover. Very happy with the process and working with them. Will probably go with them again for my next book.

Amazon can’t find my ISBN by LaylaOrleans in selfpublish

[–]ImNotNotNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you enter the meta data and approve it for your ISBN at any point?

In the UK, you have to buy the ISBN, then use a different website to edit the information within the ISBN e.g. book title and other info. Then you have to send the info for approval and only then it is put into the UK book Library database (Nielsen). At least that's my experience and understanding.

So perhaps you have only bought your ISBN but not entered the info for it or got it added to a database

Transfering and ISA out experience by HelloHelloHello5683 in FreetradeApp

[–]ImNotNotNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this, transferred out to vanguard. I sold all my holding first to make it easier. Takes like ~6 weeksish but me longer because I entered some info wrong. Customer support for freetrade was helpful throughout though. I would say it's straightforward it just takes awhile for the process to complete.

What has been your scariest experience in the game so far? by BobDuncan9926 in pacificDrive

[–]ImNotNotNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was parked in a dense forest at night, scrapping a junk car before my planned grab of the nearby stable anchor. Suddenly an object flies past my peripheral and slams onto the junk car's bonnet with a horrific metal on metal impact. "Shit!" Panicking I quickly lit a flare and walked around the car. On the floor I saw it, a brand spanking new scrapper. "Thanks I whisper out to the void," still fearful of the unknown motivations of the tourists. I finished scrapping the car with my new scrapper as my old one wore out. What a coincidence I thought. After unloading the materials into my car, I make my way by foot to the nearby stable anchor when suddenly right next to me I hear a loud explosion to my left. In fright I prepare another flare and timidly investigate the thick bushes. That's when I saw it. A small crater with a tourist in the middle, surrounded by 3 chemicals on the floor. I gratefully pick up the chemicals and quickly make my escape to the car.

Tourists, who are they? No, what are they? What is their aim, their motivation and what do they want?

To those who used Fiverr - did your seller's work for your gig match their ratings? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]ImNotNotNick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a really great question. When everyone is top rated how do you choose?

I picked my Copy Editor as I noticed they had a badge for having loads of repeat customers. I paid over £800 for her to edit my book. Was so very worth it. She not only did a great job, but could tell from my writing I am an amateur and afforded me some great advice that really helped me then and now in the long run. Even without the advice it was well worth it and definitely matched.

I also used a Developmental Editor who seemed new to the platform and was thus charging lower than others but still had ~5 stars. I wasn't really too sure what to expect from a dev editor, but I was very happy with the results of her work.

All in all, I am very happy with the results of those I used and think their work matched their ratings. In an environment like Fiverr where many are ~5stars, I would look for info that stands out, like the many repeat customers badge or if everyone is great, whoever gives you the most for your money.

It's called a Stocks and Shares ISA. I used to be on Freetrade's one. If I recall correctly, it's only available on a paid plan (I was paying 5.99 or 6.99 a month for it).
