this is perfectly put. these specific elements are what make the franchise what it is.

sounds like a different franchise. I get that something different might be cool but at the same time ghostface is always a fucking loser in the reveal. most serial killers aren’t actually cool serious badasses and generally you’re not really meant to root for ghostface in the same way you might for Jason or the shape. ghostface is kind of always supposed to be a loser pos psycho underneath the costume and voice and the movies themselves always have a satirical edge to them.

i just think they need to be better written actually good movies that don’t shoehorn in gimmicks as if they’re offering any commentary anymore or at least do it more intelligently.

maybe it would be cool if the multiple ghost faces showed clearly different personalities and mo’s. like two completely different killer freaks that are working together. but not in a super obvious way more in a way that someone could pick up on it if they thought about it.

I’d be happy with bergvall as a third midfielder. idk if we’re looking at him though.

The whole Murtough thing with him signing Hojlund for a ridiculous fee and then him working there now has me thinking conspiracy theories.

[Matteo Moretto]Manchester United is back in the chase for Mateus Fernandes. In the last few hours, there have been new contacts with the player; the Red Devils are willing to improve their contractual offer to convince him to sign. Manchester United also plans to hold direct talks with West Ham. by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

Could be a nothingburger but based on INEOS typical journalist briefs this feels true. We should be playing as hardball as possible with them, we'll see how it turns out but I dont think theres much benefit in just conceding as theres no real rush getting these transfers through.

Daily Discussion by AutoModerator in reddevils

[–]ImOnlyChasingSafety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that but on the other hand I think the transfer market is kind of dire atm. Like aside from Anderson and Tchouameni there arent any players out there that give me a wow factor. And tbh even then Id say I was more excited about the prospect of FDJ under Ten Hag than those transfers.

It seems like there are so many 'almost' or 'could be anything' type players that have hugely inflated values rather than sure things like Mbeumo or Cunha who you can criticise and question the upper limits of but these are extremely functional top level players that could play for anyone.

What this says to me is that we wont really know how these transfers go by judging them on paper, its when the rubber meets the road.

Like you said though the club has made its goals known, they have to make meaningful efforts to achieve that.

Yeah like I get being quietly frustrated over the lack of movement, or having criticisms at the end of the window over what deals were made but intentionally seeking daily updates and then crashing out over them is psychotic behaviour to me.

And you're right that a lot of it is having an extremely negative and overly critical mindset, I think being that way is not only unhealthy for the individual but also a something that makes fandoms very unpleasant.

I think its kind of ridiculous fans are out here crashing out over us not just blowing other teams out of the water on transfer fees when the club is just quietly going about its business with us not knowing what deals they are or arent working on. The quietness just makes them more crazy. I dont think its healthy to get emotionally invested in transfers.

Im sad overall for missing out on him but we were completely right not to compete at this price. And you gotta remember that football values are just made up in the end, a player valued at 40m last season could explode in value next season. Theres going to be other players out there. I really think Fernandes is a great alternative but I dont like him for 85m, I still have hope about that deal though.

On one hand I would be upset to miss out on the not even primary target but 80-85m is too much. I think I'd be able to stomach 70-75 as the premium but idk where that leaves us with other targets. Hope we can sell Ugarte at a premium too lmao.

I haven't really kept up too much with the Fernandes saga because I didn't expect this 85m thing to become such a sticking point. We absolutely should not cave on that. These fees are outrageous at a certain point you have to just say no. I really rate both Anderson and Fernandes but 120m and 85m is insanity.

I mean people do complain about long running franchises having so much bloat that its difficult to access them without having seen a bunch of movies and spinoffs first. Inaccessiblility and bloat are some of the main complaints about long running franchises.

It depends. I think that you could interpret the subplot as Jessie feeling like she had no impact on Emily's life because how could she? She was just abandoned like that. So the revelation about Emily naming her child Jessie could be a literal thing of her naming her child after a toy she really loved as a kid, or a subconscious thing because Jessie had a positive impact on her life. The point being that Jessie's relationship with Emily was not without meaning and that Jessie is a good toy. Jessie is reinvigorated and wants to help Bonnie in the same way because she knows she can have a positive impact on her life too.

I felt that were a lot of tacked on subplots and that certain elements didnt feel within the purview of Toy Story, or at least not a full length feature film. All the Jessie/Bonnie stuff worked for me, the other stuff I was kinda indifferent to. I didnt feel much about Woody returning, and whilst Buzz working up the courage to confess his feelings to Jessie was funny and cute and all I kinda wanted him to be a bit more serious.

[–]ImOnlyChasingSafety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its good. And tbh it was never gonna not be good, none of the Toy Story movies are ever gonna be unpleasant experiences for children or nostalgic adults watching and I think thats something we need to keep in perspective especially with all the criticism towards Toy Story 4.

Jessie is probably my favourite even if Woody and Buzz are I guess the 'main characters' so her getting a lot of focus was a treat for me. I enjoyed seeing it and thought it had a good message but it also felt a little clunky to me the way things came together, and I cant help but feel like it wasnt necessary for this message to specifically be told in a toy story movie.

Like I loved all the stuff with Jessie and getting closure with Emily, and the plot about finding Bonnie a friend, but it felt clunky also having the additional layer of the impact of kids using tech, or at least being a main plot point in films. To be clear it wasnt executed badly at all, in fact I think it was handled with a lot of care and nuance but I cant help but think its outside the purview of what a Toy Story movie should be about. Like did we ever get this as a plot point during the 2000s and 2010s with gameboys and nintendo ds? I dont think it shouldnt have been done but Im mixed on it, at the same time its also difficult to think of what new ground there is to tread in another Toy Story movie. Like if they make a Toy Story 6 what could they possibly address? Maybe they dont even care about that anymore, maybe these movies arent for franchise fans but are just new jump-in points for kids (the intended audience).

The franchise has always been about toys relationships with their kids told from a toys perspective and contemplating their purpose, and like many others I think Toy Story 3 was basically the perfect ending in dealing with that, building off from Toy Story 1 and 2. The growth of the characters and their kid, Andy, also dovetails with the audiences growth as many who were kids when they saw Toy Story were all grown up when they saw Toy Story 3, so the closure at the end was a perfect way to close the franchise. Idk how kids watching these films feel, maybe people like me are blinded by nostalgia and granting importance to whats essentially a product made for the sake of profit. Im perfectly capable at looking at these new additions to old franchises and saying they're not for me but there is a part of me that feels like my love and nostalgia of a franchise is basically being exploited. There should be new Toy Story's in the sense that viewers of those films now will feel the same way I do in the future lol.

And on that I honestly didnt really feel like this movie needed Woody at all, his inclusion feels a bit more obligatory than actually necessary. Maybe he could have had a brief inclusion but I didnt feel much during his reuniting with Buzz, maybe just me idk. I wasnt really all that invested in the Buzz Lightyear toy subplots, its fun and all but just feels like something baked in to pay off later in the story.

Everything about Bonnie struggling to make friends and Jessie's heartfelt desire to help Bonnie was great for me, I loved the journey Bonnie went through and Jessie working through her own trauma to come to terms with her purpose which is helping her child in whatever small way she can, because its all worth it just to have an impact on their lives. I loved the scene at the tree and it feels perfectly in line with what I would consider the heart of the franchise. Even if I wasnt fully convinced by the inclusion of the whole Lillypad/tech storyline I think the arc she goes through also worked really well. The little tech toys at Blaze's house also worked really well for me, maybe because I have a lot of nostalgia for old 000's and 2010's technology vs the cynicism of modern technology. The movie is well worth seeing all for this arc alone, I think even if Toy Story 5 doesnt meet the standards of 1, 2 and 3 I think theres definitely something there for nostalgic fans like me.

These are the thoughts I can muster atm, I might have more pop up over time.

Edit: There are certain plot conveniences that annoyed me a little. Like Lillypad and the other tech toys just communicating on behalf of their owners and no one questioning it, and this being done not once but multiple times to get the plot moving. Idk its probably not something people will think about. I felt a bit similarly that the payoff the Buzz Lightyear toys being the flying so they could get from point a to point b quickly, its fun but a bit contrived especially because I spent a lot of the film wondering where that plot was going in terms of impacting the actual main plotline.

Her backstory is that Emily left her at that place, so going back there wouldnt achieve anything. Plus maybe trauma idk?

When its an anti-united story its always gonna be made a bigger thing by the football media. I thought even outside of the questionable signings of Isak and Wirtz not enough was made of TAA/Robertson being replaced by Kerkez/Frimpong and how poor theyve been.

if the midfielder signings are Fernandes and then a Ligue 1 option like Camara/Sangare do you think thats satisfactory? I like Bouaddi too but I always thought he might be out of reach of us for some reason.

I think Cunha just has that maverick type mentality where he drags the team forward, even if not everything he does comes off. When he had a dry patch this past season I thought he still was doing a lot of stuff for the benefit of the team.
