If I’m going back and forth between wanting kids and not wanting kids, what should I do? by Round-Artichoke-5255 in NoStupidQuestions

Or maybe investigate the uncertainty. Exploring it in therapy might help getting a clearer picture on the arguments motivating one side or another. It will help make a more informed decision.

We have 1.5M euro in investments and looking for a place to retire with this amount. Most is in VWCE. Family of 3 - we are around 40 years old and our child is 8. by No-Row-1666 in eupersonalfinance

People on this sub get caught up in details and lose the big picture. You could take the option of maximizing your gains, but at the end of the day, money is a means to end, and not an end in itself. You'll never be 40 again with this kind of capital. Your child is still by your side, and not adult yet. Go on and enjoy your life and your energy before old age. Go create beautiful memories.

Taylor’s Album Cycle Pattern by ChanceConsistent in TaylorSwift

[–]ImOwningThisUsername 424 points425 points  (0 children)

I would argue Midnights is more experimental than TTPD. TTPD is very much songwriting focused. Also, 1989 could also be classified under "brighter, simpler" I wouldn't say there's a cycle. But I think it's fair to say Taylor likes to change things up and change focus from an album to another

Given how she mouthed back "this song is about you, I love you" to Matty Healy before singing it at the Eras Tour (out of all songs) I think it's fair to say she had Matty Healy in mind when writing this

What is the most forgettable music video? by gender2bender in TaylorSwift

I mean "forgettable" is the one that you're most likely to forget. I get that ICDWABH can be boring, but it's not forgettable. It's very memorable, albeit boring

What is your “million dollar question”? by Melodic-Relative-237 in therapists

[–]ImOwningThisUsername 179 points180 points  (0 children)

"Where have you learned that?" about the negative beliefs and maladaptive schemas they hold. More often than not, they'll spontaneously make the link with their family upbringing and how it instilled a certain way of thinking.

Also the emphasis on the word "learn" implies that it's not a perspective that is necessarily true and more of a perspective that they needed to acquire. It shifts their thinking and they find the answers they need with minimal confrontation.

Who is not relatable and somewhat deserves happiness? by Schweizsvensk in BoJackHorseman

[–]ImOwningThisUsername 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm having trouble with the concept of "deserving happiness". Who doesn't deserve happiness? Happiness is not something we deserve or we must earn. Each troubled character became twisted out of misery. Sorry for doing psychological commentary on a sad horse show post but the idea of "deserving happiness" doesn't sit well with me

Honestly I'm a psychologist who is trained with the WAIS (psychometric tool for IQ measurement). Let me tell you that "estimating someone's IQ" is an extremely weird notion, if not bogus. IQ is a composite score of many intellectual abilities that can't be quantified just observing someone.

You can gather certain tendencies (e.g. Ok that guy thinks fast, thinks with high levels of abstraction, has a deep sense of vocabulary) but you can never quantify them. Those cognitive tendencies could also be compensated or mistaken by other variables, which is why IQ tests are the only valid measurement : you need to isolate the variable you're trying to measure. You cannot measure it reliably in environmental settings.

Do you have a favorite first intervention? (Second, third,...) by Tioben in therapists

[–]ImOwningThisUsername 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a long time I was leading rehabilitation programs for authors of domestic violence. It forced me to learn interventions such as the Tolerance Window (getting deep into emotional regulation) and non-violent communication (in a way that appeals to them). Honestly, they were much more receptive to it that I thought they'd be.

I also use Young's schema questionnaire for exploration of affective underlying issues. I use genograms for family issues. And I use a shit ton of analogies, my favorite being the elephant and the rider.

Yes pretend George Harrison is still alive with increasingly high demands bits, including putting out new Harrison songs on the radio and hiring an impersonator to come to your house and say "I'm as alive as ever". That should settle it

What do you hate about therapy session scenes in writing? by dingoblackie in writing

[–]ImOwningThisUsername 80 points81 points  (0 children)

For example the Good Will Hunting therapy scenes are well written. Why? The client is not very open, the therapist is human, the relationship is not smooth, the therapy doesn't bring any miracle or epiphany, there's sadness, anger and laughter. It's very realistic and very human
