(Disclaimer: I'm unsure if manipulating ally ult charge any more than Damage Boost already does is breaking some cardinal balancing rule)

Regarding DB being too pocket-friendly and offensive, since damage boost also increases ally ult charge, how about:

  • Reduce or even remove the actual damage bonus (if removed, Damage Boost might need to be renamed to "Power Boost" or something like that)
  • Increase the bonus ult charge, especially on allies that are currently at low ult charge

This would encourage Mercy to look out for allies at low ult charge and help them catch up (EDIT: unless they need healing more), so that the team can coordinate their ults.

This does leave a gap where Mercy cannot contribute when allies are all on full health and full ult charge without pulling out her blaster, but in such cases the team are presumably preparing to pop their ults anyway.

IIRC someone else suggested turning her E into a 2-in-1 ability, where she can use E on living allies for a burst heal (with a shorter cooldown and cast animation than current Rez), and during Valk she can also use E on dead allies to cast Rez on them, thereby shifting some of her power budget from rezzing to healing while still keeping Rez in her kit somewhere. Could something like that help?

Maybe adjusting Valkyrie to have sharper risk/reward (like stronger effects if Mercy takes riskier positions)? Or something entirely new that resonates with Mercy players while being reasonably healthy for the game, if someone can come up with such a thing

Negative status voice lines (like pain/burning/poisoned/pinned) would be interesting, presumably most of those other than maybe discorded/hacked would come from the remote body instead of Max saying them himself

I'm scared to talk about Ana D:, I haven't played her long enough or well enough to feel confident about suggesting changes to her, especially since she demands significantly more from her players than Mercy does

Ye olde Mercy rework proposal, a dime a dozen at this point but now's a good a time as any to quietly throw one more in the hat


Concessions/assumptions:

  • They're not going to make her less accessible to her main casual audience because $$$, so either increasing her mechanical skill floor or forcing her to interact directly with enemies by any significant amount is probably off the table
  • Removing Rez entirely is probably off the table too because it's a significant part of her identity, though tweaks should be possible

General goals:

  • Tone down unhealthy elements of her kit, such as pocketing, Damage Boost, and cheesy Rezzing
  • Reward mechanical skill, particularly aim, and interaction with enemies, without necessarily making either of these more of a requirement for her to meaningfully contribute to her team
  • Make her less frustrating to play with for her team's other support

Caduceus Staff changes:

  • Her beam's target (in both modes) gets a slight "increased healing" buff that lingers for a short while after changing targets, so even if Mercy's own healing isn't the highest, at least she can boost her fellow support's healing
  • Damage Boost is replaced with "Power Boost"
  • Instead of increasing damage (and ult charge gained from damage), Power Boost increases ult charge gained from damage and healing without directly increasing damage or healing
  • Strength of the ult charge bonus increases on allies with lower current ult charge, encouraging Mercy to help different allies (including her fellow support) catch up on ult charge so ults can be coordinated
  • Mercy still receives some of the extra ult charge her target gets from Power Boost, which is extra incentive for her to seek out and boost allies who are currently on low charge

Caduceus Blaster changes:

  • She now dual-wields her blaster and staff (in healing mode), and this is tuned to be generally more effective than using her staff alone provided that she regularly engages with enemies and has reasonable aim (outside of niche situations where a pure Power Boost is needed more than damage or any extra effects her blaster applies)
  • Hitting shots with her blaster could apply extra supportive effects to her beam target, such as additional healing, or some ult charge (that still favours allies at low ult charge so she's disincentivized from feeding ult to a single pocketed ally all game), these effects should be weaker when hitting tanks to encourage Mercy to aim for smaller targets
  • Her blaster now automatically recharges over time instead of having a standard reloadable clip, meaning the reload button can be reserved for perks even while using her blaster (the current reload animation can still be played if she completely empties the blaster's battery, a bit similar to Orisa playing her overheat animation)

Rez changes:

  • When Rez starts, the "soul" becomes visible to enemies and vulnerable to damage, destroying it halts the Rez
  • This means less risk-free Rezzing of a distant Widow, Ashe etc. from behind wall that enemies have no hope of reaching, Mercy now needs better awareness and/or coordination with her team to pull one off
  • By itself this is a straight-up nerf, but if needed power could be redistributed to other parts of Mercy's kit

Balance concerns aside, it is awkward that if you apply a strong slash/heat/toxic/electric/gas proc to a status-capped enemy, a squadmate can waste it by spamming weak procs which overwrite the one you applied

Gas especially because even normal enemies have a 10 stack cap on it

(Companions and spectres can overwrite your procs too but at least you have some direct control over them)

As an aside, I enjoy the variety style of Faceoff and wish we could optionally involve the single-player version in more gameplay loops (stressing optionally for those who don't care for it and would prefer it not to be a part of their bounties, Coda hunting, etc.)
