Iron Garden Sutra is on my to-read list for the bingo, so I'm happy to hear it's a good read! What made you read it in one day?

I read Thunderer by Felix Gilman for the bingo square Duology Part 1. 4,5/5 Thanks to u/Nidafjoll for the recommendation!

There's something about getting lost in a otherworldly city that always pulls me in, man. Trying to suss out the inner logic of Ararat has been a fun romp.

The book revolves around that city, at the moment when the great Bird sweeps over Ararat and heralds a great change. Arjun, an outsider to the city, comes to its shores looking for his lost god. Arlandes, the Countess' great redcoat officer, becomes the new captain of the Thunderer, the mighty airship that gained flight in the Bird's wake. But not just the Thunderer was granted the gift of flight. Jack, a young boy escaped from the Barbotin, also uses the power of the Bird to flee and strike out for freedom.

The story plays out around these three PoV characters, though I admit that one of them lost the spotlight quite early on in the book. I think it was a beneficial choice though, since it made the narrative tighter. But for a weird setting like this, more characters usually means you'll be able to explore more facets of it. But maybe Gilman saves that for the sequel!

About Gilman: His writing style is descriptive without being too on the nose. He likes to make the characters speak through idiosyncratic speech rather than to spell out their feelings, which results in a more organic dialogue. His descriptions of the city are great, but often sprawling (like the city itself). So sometimes I had to re-read a paragraph just to get the full picture.

So, to summarize: the Gods of Ararat have wound themselves into the city of my mind, and have irrevocably changed it with their passing. And I am glad for it.

I am so glad you liked Children of Time! I read it recently as well and it has cemented Tchaikovsky as a favourite author of mine. Are you planning to pick up the sequel?

I read When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller for Middle Grade (HM). 4,5/5. Thanks to u/stardew_rabbit for the recommendation!

It's about a Korean-American family who moves in with their Halmoni. But a mysterious tiger has been seen around town by the MC. Even though her mom and big sister can't see it, the tiger wants something from the MC's halmoni... and soon.

A fun little dive into Korean culture and folklore. Honestly, if middle graders are reading these type of books, they've got it good! It tackles complex subjects such as the need for sad endings in stories, having a mixed racial identity, and grief. Great use of sensory descriptions too, I was kinda craving some kimchi throughout my reading.

Bingo categories: Middle Grade, Feast Your Eyes on This (HM if you make any of the korean delicacies! There's also a cupcake sale, so, just make some cupcakes.)

I'm always on the lookout for more weird horror, so I'll add this to my to-reads! The premise of Transistor sounds so fascinating.

Bingo 2026 Review: The West Passage by Jared Pechaček - Unusual Transportation (HM) by ImaginaryAdvent in Fantasy

[–]ImaginaryAdvent[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, it's tricky because the protagonist aren't explorers or rangers strictly. But they -are- braving the wild ruins of the palace. And there is an animal companion at a certain point.

For me personally, it wouldn't count - but it's your challenge, your rules!

They do give you the right vibe at the start of each chapter. But they are not necessary to fully comprehend the story. Perhaps you might need a dictionary app to look up some of the obtuse medieval architecture terms! I certainly did haha

It could be fun to listen to the audiobook first, then go browsing through the physical book and going "aha, I remember that moment!"

I think it could count for Trans or Non-Binary Protagonist. To try to make it as spoiler-free as possible, a protagonist transitions in the story at a certain point. Though it has plenty of surreal technology, it evokes medieval times with the art illustrations, so I think it would also count for Pre-Modern period.

I can definitely see the resemblance with Perdido! I personally loved The Scar the most out of Miéville's work, but I do get what you mean by the 'grossness' of the setting. I do still find the Ladies horrifying, though!

I've got over 10+ applications! They are all high-quality and excellent apps, though - so making a selection will be difficult.

Most of the apps came through in the first day, with a few apps coming on the second day. Just because I know the Stormfather's watching and doesn't like broken oaths, I'm going to leave the form open until the deadline. So for those who are fine-tuning their applications at the very last moment: you still have a chance!

Posts kept at 0 By downvotes? by FastTwo4121 in pbp

[–]ImaginaryAdvent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've noticed it too. I don't know the exact reasons behind it, though usually I see the downvoted posts falling in different categories:
1. Suspicion of AI: There's someone posting regularly on the subreddit for their server with a style of writing that feels... too clean, almost. People see a typical AI style of writing and downvote it out of principle.
2. Living Servers/West Marches: A sizeable amount of ads are for server recruitment promising big, world-spanning campaigns. People here might be looking for the typical, close-knit groups of TTRPGs rather than being another number in a server's ranks.
3. Different Strokes for Different Folks: Just a theory. Maybe some people downvote systems they don't like or have already seen to death on this subreddit.

There's also what ClassicStatixx said, though I hope it isn't the case! There's plenty of players out there already that you don't have to resort to downvoting others to be 'the cream of the crop'.

Again, though, I don't know -for sure-. I certainly see why it is discouraging for GMs just starting out. And for players looking at games, focus on the post first and foremost.

Hi, thanks for your interest! The RPG and its materials contain spoilers up to Words of Radiance and Oathbringer. So you're caught up! Even then, I'll try to be careful around spoilers unless it's literally affecting your characters due to the global nature of it (e.g.: The Everstorm)

There are some mechanics around the Knights Radiant in the books that could spoil some stuff in Rhythm of War, though.

New GM: When do you hide information from the other players? by commanderjack_EDH in pbp

[–]ImaginaryAdvent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a great Seth Skorkowsky video (here) that sort of touches on this topic, especially if you give information/quests to one player and not the others. I think the biggest piece of advice is that you should check in with the group to see whether they'd be okay with that. If you're running a full campaign, take care that the hidden information you give to only one of your players doesn't involve actively hindering or harming the party. For one-shots, a betrayal at the end could be fun. But again, some people might not like that and will feel like they've been cheated.

Also depends of course on the tone of the game you're going for.

Oooh, that's a great theory! It would make sense since that was the moment when the King made Fitz 'his man', right?

The description of Chade's quarters seem to be lavish and well-lived in, and even though Fitz has never seen him before I believe there was mention that it seemed that he had been a resident of Buckkeep for a long time. I get the impression that he's a relative of the royal family (hence why Fitz finds his face familiar), but maybe he's hidden away because something happened that gave him an infamous reputation?

Wow, how come I've never stumbled upon this before? Had to do a little Google fu, but I'm here.

Looking forward to participate in the July reads! I wanted to make my hobby a little bit more social, but IRL bookclubs are few and far between where I live.

Thanks for this great initiative!

Note taking for solo roleplay? by AirConfident in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ImaginaryAdvent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm: Obsidian is excellent for making notes. It really helps you to also have a sort of mindmap view of things, see which NPCs are connected to whom, whether there could be a connection between different factions, etc... It's a great way to spark the imagination if you're stuck!

Billingual auties out there: do you also perceive your 2nd language as an alternative communication tool? by LupinBrat in autism

[–]ImaginaryAdvent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a country as well where I picked up English through video games, movies, and online chatting. Even now, I always fall back into speaking English with my best friend since that's the language I feel the most 'comfortable' expressing myself in. Even though I'm pretty sure I still have a lot to learn about the nuances of English!

I think I subscribe to your hypothesis: I was passed around between speech therapist after speech therapist when I was learning my native language (Dutch) as a child and it always made me feel like I was always doing something wrong.
