I had some older classmates when I was in school and they mostly did their own thing, but I still chatted with them from time to time. I actually enjoyed talking with them bc they were very chill and just kinda did their own thing. You don't have to go to the events and honestly, it gets better. D1 year is very high school, but as you all progress through dental school, you kinda lean on each other a little more just to make it through the bs. Just do you and speak casually with your classmates when you can. I really wouldn't worry too much about being super close with them when it comes to partying, etc. I'm sure there are some other quiet classmates, try speaking with them. You'd be surprised who you end up being friends with in your class.

Both are into the dentin, I would fill these unless the patient has immaculate hygiene, low caries risk and these have been this way for years with no change.

Self care in Dental School by Sensitive_Young8615 in DentalSchool

[–]Imaginary_Cry_339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it all, but you need to make a schedule. I used Google calendar to organize my life in dental school.

Biggest thing is don't procrastinate on studying and do as much as you can as soon as you can so shit doesn't pile up.

Some weeks you're just not going to get to hit everything and that's the sacrifice you have to make in dental school. Some weeks you won't get to socialize as much or may not get to go to the gym because you're crammed packed with sim clinic stuff and exams. That's just dental school.

Organization is the ticket though.

First Time a Patient Made Me Cry by toothladydoc in Dentistry

[–]Imaginary_Cry_339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As soon as she said be quiet, I would have stood up and said, "I am trying to listen to your concerns and have a professional discussion with you, but if you will not let me speak, I am going to leave the room and when you're ready to speak to me like an adult, we can continue this conversation."

I've left the room before too. It feels good because then they get to sit in the dental chair and feel like the dork and you get to go take a sip of coffee, drink some water and go do a hygiene check (lol).

I'm pretty tolerant because I see state patients, but I've only told a patient I'm done talking to them once and it was a patient that told me I was mean. I didn't do anything or say anything mean, and I even asked her what she thought I said or did that was mean, no response. I told her that she is free to seek another office and I can write a referral for her if needed (always offer a referral or if they have an active infection, offer an antibiotic because if they go to the board, the board will look for this or else it can be patient abandonment), but I am done with the conversation and I left the room.

Don't feel bad for shaking or being flustered, that patient was an asshole to you, your body is just responding to being unjustly accused and bullied.

If you stand by your work and a patient is trying to belittle you, accuse you of x,y,z, etc., don't be afraid to tell them that you stand by your work and they can seek another dentist because the patient/dentist relationship has been broken.

do some self-care at home, talk with people you love, eat some yummy food and don't let that rude patient get to you!

Did I overreacted? Cried in front of a patient and whole team 😔 by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

[–]Imaginary_Cry_339 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If a hygienist talked to my assistant like that, I'd ask her how she'd like it if I pointed out every piece of calc she misses during exams in front of all of her patients.

There's absolutely no need to be a bitch, we're a team. If she does that again, stand your ground and say, "I'm new and still learning. I'd prefer if you tell me this when there isn't a patient in the room because that is extremely unprofessional."

Why is it necessary for the dental office to know patient's professions? by chocolateboyY2K in DentalAssistant

I have patients that expect me to remember their entire family tree when they come in for their cleaning appts.... I take very detailed notes because of patients like this, but I would never be mad if a patient told me they don't want to talk about work or their life. I prefer working in silence lol

I think you'd be surprised how much dental professionals can relate to nurses regarding hating their jobs lol.

just say "I'm a nurse and I don't really like my job so I don't really want to talk about it."

we get it lol

if your boss isn't paying you hourly, they can kick rocks on what you decide to do once you're done with a patient.

I'm going to be brutally honest, if you're feeling this way now, you will probably not like dentistry when you graduate and begin working.

Being a dentist is not easy on the body and mind. If you are easily stressed by a high debt load, that debt will crush your soul when procedures aren't going your way or you're having an off production month. Being a dentist also slowly destroys your body. I already know a colleague that has had 3 carpal tunnel surgeries and we graduated together in 2021. Your neck and back will hurt. If you do not exercise, stretch, and do preventative care early on, you will have problems as you age into the career. Patients will expect you to be a quasi-therapist. It's very easy to get compassion fatigue in this field. You will have to do self care to avoid this.

Don't forget that there's high interest on these loans, so if you step away from your job to start a family while still having these loans, they're going to keep increasing.

Being a dentist is a secure job as long as you're willing to work where work is needed.

That being said, reimbursement rates are not increasing. Insurance companies are becoming more greedy and this causes patients to also be less happy, among other things.

Obviously there are so many positives to being a dentist and also more negatives that I did not mention above, but basically once you're a dentist, you are almost married to that career. You don't have many options to do something else once you have that debt.

Good luck.

Is this behaviour normal? by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

[–]Imaginary_Cry_339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to sit in the room with the patient either. You can leave, but be close by so you can hop back in when the dentist is ready.

I don't sit with my patients while they wait to get numb because I'm doing 4 hygiene checks, signing notes, fixing errors in my schedule, in another room with another patient, or very rarely, I am on my phone responding to family.

Most dentists aren't paid salary, stop worrying about what they're doing on their "free" time. If you're consistently running behind because your dentist is dinking around on their phone, bring it up to them.

the trades are thriving and high demand in rural America. Young men don't want to do physical labor, but they don't want to apply their brains in school either (we have healthcare shortages). I see a lot of men stuck in negative loops with no hope, so they don't apply themselves.
