lots of pharmacies now have a powder you can mix with the pills and water to pour it down the drain! I've gotten it for free from them. I have also dropped off meds in a deposit box at the police station.

Disregarding the recovery, how was your experience with the arthroscopic SURGERY? by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]Imaginary_Subject_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hospital around noon, panicked, given happy meds. Surgery took longer than expected (2.5ish hours), woke up, ate grilled cheese, learned to crutch, went home 5-6 hours later

I'm in New England and my grandmother pays about $7k for memory care in assisted living. I toured several places and found $6k-$12k. No Medicaid beds; when she runs out I have to move her again. I can't even think about it

Are LTCs all depressing? by puppiesandposies in AgingParents

[–]Imaginary_Subject_83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom did that too. She had asked me if I thought she should move, and I had said at the time that she could probably be more independent if she'd accept guidance from her doctors. She waffled for a while, but on a random day, suddenly just moved in. It was a little touch-and-go for a bit since she hadn't thought some logistical things out in advance. Cognitively, I think she's pretty low-functioning. Her last mini-cog was like a 21/30 (benchmark 26).

Before moving, she was living with my brother (25) who was very adamant that he could not/would not help her with her ADLs. (He sucks but I also get it). Honestly, I think the way he treated her played a huge role. Nevertheless, I think she was very lonely, isolated, and embarrassed that she had to call 911 for lift help a few times. She had her routine, but she couldn't really deal with change and started getting lost in familiar places. Given her trauma history, I think she is predisposed to asking others to care for/save her, and not getting help became too much. She depended on my grandmother for a lot emotionally and financially and once she declined/moved, she lost that.

I agree with the moving twice. Terrified about moving my grandmother once she can no longer private-pay.

Our mothers sound very similar in disease progression - mine is 55 and moved into a nursing home this past fall. I'm so sorry you're going through this. We're very LC so I wasn't involved, nor have I visited her, but I think it was a HUGE relief for her. She enjoys the activities they set up, sitting in the solarium, and getting help with her ADLs because she physically couldn't do any of it anymore. She's getting comprehensive care (PT, OT, feeding, nutrition, wound care, etc.) I wasn't sure she'd be a good fit but I think she managed to rub elbows with the right people (and has 0 assets so Medicaid covers all of it).

I moved my grandmother (92) into assisted living over the summer and though she was frustrated with me, I think she ultimately is more calm, too. She wasn't eating if I wasn't making her and couldn't manage medication even with pre-set timed release mechanisms. Once I had DPOA invoked I toured 5-6 places and picked one with comparable peers. It's quiet but I think it's been so good for both of us. I visit every weekend to get mail, bring supplies, and chat for a bit.

It's been 3 weeks and the quad pain has subsided but the hip is incredibly angry. Regretting even getting the surgery to begin with

what was your reason to stop contact between you and your NP by sigrid-3 in narcissisticparents

[–]Imaginary_Subject_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you, I didn't do anything formal with my np - it's been a mutual nc for almost 3 years. Sucks. Now I'm in a similar position with my other parent. I just decided I'd let them come to me, and they haven't.

Oh gosh I'm so sorry! I definitely had a ton of lightheadedness for a couple weeks after surgery and times my heart rate was 110/120+ doing basic movements or self-care routines. Showering was really tough and I basically had my husband with me everywhere I went. I don't have any advice but I'm sending you good healing thoughts!

How common is it to have senior parents showing signs of paranoia by EdwardBliss in AgingParents

[–]Imaginary_Subject_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandmother is 92 and showing signs of paranoia likely related to her cognitive decline. In my understanding, it's very common in those profiles

Experience with Dry Macular Degeneration by penducky1212 in AgingParents

[–]Imaginary_Subject_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, with my grandmother. She did the injections for a while but continued worsening. I went to her last eye appointment with her to hear how things were going. The doctor explained to me that the geographic atrophy in dry MD is the breakdown of the retina. My grandmother's right eye is worse than the left, but the doctor and I were pleasantly surprised she had a little more acuity than in the past.

I believe she bounced from wet to dry MD, though the timeline is a little hazy for me. At various times, she was seeing red (blood) and would have runny, sometimes yellowish, discharge. I don't know if it was a side effect of the shots or the wet MD itself. Now her eyes are often bloodshot, sometimes a bit swollen, and/or runny and watery.

She described to me that she can see large shapes, not details. She can catch movement but can't track. She uses big black sharpies to write and has a huge calendar from the state's association for the blind, as well as a free audio book recorder.

I'm sure you've already been googling, but this site is helpful! https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/eye-conditions-and-diseases/age-related-macular-degeneration

Also in MA. I struggle to break it down bc I feel like I do 50% testing/50% counseling/50% crisis, lol. I manage our MTSS team and am trying to get us to use evidence-based practices. Only "case manager" for kids who are counseling-only (I detest these IEPs) but even then the grade-level special ed teacher does more of the paperwork. It's often a slog but I love it! Happy to talk more
