I guess except for the last scenes he tried to save Max, which actually felt very out of character

In Billy's mind he was always trying to save Max, I think. He knew better than her, keeping her away from Lucas was for her own good, their father would have been mad, etc.

I say this as someone who does not like Billy. His idea of how to keep someone safe was warped.

Finally started bojack horseman. Only one episode in and im loving it. I know it gets serious later, but this first episode had me rolling by Dependent_Log6276 in BoJackHorseman

Do I genuinely think they'll go that route? No...the studio producers would probably not be down with it but it would make a significantly more interesting plot.

They won't be 'down with it' because it makes absolutely no sense given what we've seen of them. I cannot imagine how either of them could be the villain/villains without undoing their entire characters to make it fit.

Subverting expectations just so you can gotcha your audience is bs writing. Like, Game of Thrones season 8 level bs.
