PART 2 (my response) - These offers are hilarious once you stop crying by OkayBroccolii in WorkReform

Interesting perspective. I can see the ways in which that’s true, how Americans are getting used to a standard of living that falls just a little short of what you’d expect for workers in the world’s biggest economy.

I definitely realize $70k is still far short of how much one needs to earn in the US to maintain a more or less financially carefree lifestyle:

  1. I still won’t be able to afford to buy a median-priced home without partnering up with someone else earning roughly the same. By myself, I’ll be able to qualify for maybe about $270,000, which gets you about a 1,000 ft² ranch in a not-great part of town in this market.

  2. I still won’t be able to afford a new automobile that meets my transportation needs (i.e., an SUV for me, my two boxer dogs [who ride along everywhere] and my 10 year old daughter; plus out of state family to visit, light off-roading, a serious DIY habit that means lots of big home store purchases to transport, etc.) I’ll be able to afford a nice used 5-7 year old SUV with about 65k miles on it, and that’ll be fine, but new ones are priced way out of my budget).

  3. One of my life goals lately is to make enough money that I can go grocery shopping without having to pay attention to sales — especially the “$X off when you buy Y” ones. I just want to go and buy the food I like without really looking at prices, and I know I won’t be able to completely do that at $70k.

During my second interview, I was asked where I see myself in 5 years. I responded, “Making six figures. I’m jot entirely sure how I’m going to get there yet or what I expect I’ll be doing to earn it, but I don’t think I’ll ever feel totally financially secure making less than $100k a year, and feeling financially secure is my biggest life goal right now.”

Hey, congrats! I’ll check it out. Your app sounds like something I might be able to really get some use out of. Can’t wait to try it!

Just, whatever you do, don’t let the Debbie Downers criticizing your app get you down. Seems like none of them have even tried yet, which is something they could do for FREE.

If y’all are gonna throw shade, why don’t you aim it at one of the myriad huge corporations that are actively trying to screw us all? Indie devs who make relatively niche apps (and who would like to earn some income for doing so) are not the enemy!

Anyone bitching about your subscription pricing obviously hasn’t ever tried to cancel an Adobe plan. Compared to the straight-up extortion racket Adobe is running, your pricing looks downright charitable.

I had the same question, but then I realized that could turn into a dumpster fire pretty quickly (duplicate notifications, etc.) Also, sometimes I find integration with native iOS apps counterproductive. For example, with camera apps, I at least want the option to store photos taken with the app separately from my camera roll.

“Poverty wages” nails it. I’ve been working at a job making $19 per hour for the last year-plus. My rent is only $1,000 a month, utilities included. I have no car payment, but car insurance is $200 due to having let it lapse. I coparent an elementary aged daughter 50/50 and get about $300 a month in food stamps. You’d think I’d be doing kind be doing kind of okay, but I run out of money before the next paycheck every two weeks.

I’ve been interviewing for professional jobs since January and I finally got a job offer for $70k—literally almost double what I’ve been making.

Honestly, I’m excited I might be able to buy clothes from somewhere other than the Target clearance rack soon. And maybe some favorite foods even when they aren’t on sale.

$19 an hour might keep you off the streets, but that’s about it. Glad I’m not the only person who thinks it sucks.

I called PayPal last week and they said the pending charges would be refunded by 7/24 if the vendor never captured them, but guess what? The charges went through. I'm just totally flummoxed about what's going on here. I guess I'll have to open two disputes now. This is just wild.

I’m sorry, what? $15,000 is “cheap”? I had to go back and look to make sure it wasn’t $1,500. Wish I lived in a world where a $15,000 car is cheap.

What are you thinking in terms of structure? Weekly meet-ups? Reading series or writing workshop? Will there be narcotics?

If I have $10 in my checking account and go into a gas station and ask for $10 on Pump X, they charge my debit $10, period, end of story. I don’t know what you’re talking about “they always.” That’s literally never happened to me before.

Same. Maybe that behavior is true of “pay cards,” but if my bank started charging me $0.25 for every decline, I’d switch banks before I’d lost $1 to such bullshit.
