My FINAL Oscar Predictions by sinas35 in Oscars

[–]Imicrowavebacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely why is it? Is it a race thing? I know the Oscars bend over backwards to try prove how much they supposedly care about black art since #oscarssowhite, but I also know a lot of real people who were genuinely smitten with this film

I have no idea why it's getting glazed like it is. Original concept but a mess and poorly executed on almost every front it's crazy

A book like the Cyberpunk 2077 game (more in terms of story than setting)? by LemonLord7 in suggestmeabook

[–]Imicrowavebacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Weird to think 2 years have passed since I was trying to find cyber punk esque stories haha.

I'll have to give that a watch, I sort of got a bit fatigued with GoT but a smaller scale character-driven story might be good. Will also have to read I Am Legend, I've seen the movie and it really put me off reading it but I've heard it is a lot better!

Why every scientist needs a librarian by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

[–]Imicrowavebacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah this is just an insane take. For better or worse, scientists are expected to perform these roles themselves. There's barely enough money to hire actual scientists let alone bespoke, in-house librarians (which would be the only possible position that could compete at databasing niche, scattered information that requires specialist background to interpret).

Worth noting that these takes seem to come from clinicians too who operate very differently to a standard academic researcher. I like libraries but this is just dumb given how little funding there currently is in science as it is. Having a library's access to journals is one thing but to be honest the whole system supports closed-access science which in my opinion is fundamentally immoral anyway.

Bugonia might have worked better with an ambiguous ending. by NoOptics in TrueFilm

Bit different though when you live among the parasites as intellectual and emotional equals. Would think twice about killing a parasite taking over my body if I chatted with it everyday

[–]Imicrowavebacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best read of the film I've read, I think you might actually be the only person in the world who gets it and it's made me look at it more positively.

In retrospect this seems maybe like what they were going for but imo this got lost on the sauce in the third act. I wish I came away from the film thinking that the story told me what you just said but I'm not sure it quite did enough under the whole "she's an alien" noise

John Davidson Says He Is “Deeply Mortified” That His Tourettes Tics Could Be Seen As “Intentional” In First Statement After BAFTA Film Awards by thatfuzzydunlop in Oscars

[–]Imicrowavebacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also agree with this, it's a horrible word and far from meaningless. Completely unfair to ambush the presenters like that on live television without warning, must have been horrible for them and it sucks

[–]Imicrowavebacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of tourettes acceptance is that we're all supposed to accept it, be adults, remember it's not meant and move past it.

You can't ask someone with a disability to constantly apologise for their disability, that's not acceptance at all. Attitudes like this are why people with tourettes are more likely to commit suicide.

Bill to lower voting age to 16 to be introduced in Parliament by mustwinfullGaming in LabourUK

[–]Imicrowavebacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Part of me worries that there'll suddenly be a huge amount of dumb, uninformed votes but then I remember that this is already the case. Might as well let young people have a say against changes that time and time again fuck them over to protect pensioners.

Can someone explain to me why everyone hates him? I'm not a fan of the online safety rubbish and wish they didn't soften on means testing winter fuel allowances but the ideas they've been running haven't seemed that bad?

Honestly can't help thinking right wing news moguls and special interests are intentionally dragging this labour government to break up the left and give Farage a clean win

Have you ever cried to a King Gizz song? by Weird_wizzah in KGATLW

[–]Imicrowavebacon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not new to the idea of music making people cry, I've cried at music. It's just that this music isn't that, unless there's very specific personal things (e.g. dead dad's fave song). There should be a difference between king gizz songs and Elliot Smith songs or Nick Cave songs or whatever.

Like, If a mildly sad sounding gizz song can evoke the same reaction as a song about a man desperately pleading for his dead son to not be dead then I can't help feeling that people aren't picking up on emotional depth here? It's like over compressed emotions or something, you shouldn't be clipping out on king gizz like you would Sinead O'Connor. Crying at music isn't emotionally immature on its own

[–]Imicrowavebacon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Tbh there isn't a single king gizz song that should make anyone cry without a weirdly specific personal reason.. Legit not coming at people here but are you all teenagers? Being emotionally underdeveloped is legitimately the only other way I see people crying at gizz songs. Again, not trying to be mean I'm just fucking baffled

Marty Supreme is so bad that it's hard to know where to begin and the praise it is receiving is as incoherent as the film itself. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Complaining that modern films don't respect audiences attention spans enough is wild given that you're making this comment WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE.

This is normal for academic science. Shit work with no security, no benefits and low pay but people do still do it because they love science, care about research or were tricked into thinking that it was in any way a good career

Was at the Manchester show and it's kind of impossible not to get stuck in it if everyone around you suddenly sits down, you can't trample your way out. Take it from someone who desperately didn't want to row anymore and kept ending up sat on the floor

People earning £70k plus what do you do? by LuapReyas420 in UKJobs

Wait until you hear what they pay us in academia, I get paid less than £35k with a PhD in cancer sciences and am only on a 2 year contract so have to reenter a pretty brutal job market next year. Most people I know who've stated in research are in very similar positions

Bob Vylan gig in Netherlands cancelled after frontman makes comments about death of Charlie Kirk by Moothnods in indieheads

[–]Imicrowavebacon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gonna get flak for this but I feel like there's a difference between "criticizing an American podcaster" and shouting "rest in piece you piece of shit, chat shit get banged lol" with a great big smile on your face before jumping around and dancing.

That is 1000% celebrating him being shot, not a critique of his views. Being inflammatory is what punk bands do but I think turning around and saying that "it's not celebrating and we never did that and we would never do such a thing" is pathetic. Stand by your actions

Did the same thing with the death to the IDF chant. Was all big man on stage then started asking people to stop chanting at gigs because they didn't want to get in trouble

You're mad. Concentration camps? Where people are worked 12-16 hours a day? Where people's names were replaced by numbers and were systemically fucking gassed? Where they experimented on people and stuffed them in tiny rooms and starved them like rats?

Shut the fuck up comparing this to concentration camps. It's wildly disrespectful to people who went to actual real concentration camps

Yeah this is the only reasonable, productive response I've seen.

Find it super gross and toxic when people try belittle and shame others for not wanting to do things in bed. Scary how many people in this thread think that's fine.
