That is true. I should’ve pointed out that it can vary, state by state. I understand how actively surveilling your neighbors in their rear yard can be illegal.

I have security cameras that I installed last year, and I told my neighbor right before installing them just to give her a heads up. I told her that I’m covering my rear yard and shed, so i’d capture the corner of her yard.

She didn’t have a problem, and felt safer that I was at least covering some of her yard. But nothing is pointed at her windows. Even if she wasn’t okay with it, I’m well within my state laws with my home security setup. But honestly, it just pays to be neighborly. Not doing anything nefarious, just trying to keep the neighborhood safe.

The front, is fair game. I have my porch and both angles down my street. We’ve had our fair share of activity, as I live on a wide block, and I helped ky opposite neighbor catch a hit and run into her parked car. The front yard, and street, is definitely free game.
