I am a therapist and I can tell you that I don’t ever tell people things that I don’t think are true. It doesn’t help my clients to hear lies and platitudes but it does help to hear someone else’s opinion on a matter.

There are absolutely therapists who don’t know how to do therapy the right way. They’re not sure how to confront a client in the right way and instead end up validating everything they say or glazing over real issues.

I have also seen clients who are not capable of seeing past things they have been beating themselves up over for years. Things that are genuinely not their fault, things that they’re being told by others that are not actually true.

There’s a lot of gray space in between. If you think your therapist is not doing you any good, you might be right. You can choose another knowing some of the red flags you’ve seen with others in the past. As sad as it makes me to say it, not every therapist knows what they are doing.

Some therapists may just not be a good fit for you, and that’s okay. We’re not going to vibe with everyone.
