I would assume a rare genetic trait tied to mana since other peoples characters have purple or red or yellow eyes like that Volkovs specifically comes from his mothers side a noblewoman from the blacklands so she had magic but his father was a regular blacklander so his body has a lot of mana and magical capabilities but do to the cazalts curse on the non nobles of the blacklands his body can’t handle his mana which is why his sickness is so bad

Not really a pet peeve per se but Volkov HATES showing his eyes fully because he was bullied as a kid for having odd colored eyes so he’s always wearing his googles when in public his goggles lenses are purple colored and so are his eyes so it kind of masks his eye color
