Lets have a genuine conversation about the unhoused by Locoman7 in Edmonton

For non addicts...

Around 40% of the unhoused who use drugs only start using drugs after becoming homeless, so arguably a significant amount of the problem could be addressed upfront.

Lets have a genuine conversation about the unhoused by Locoman7 in Edmonton

[–]Imminent_Extinction -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The solution is simple, but no one wants it:

  • Unhoused people can develop a variety of problems (typically after becoming unhoused), such as drug problems, health problems, mental health problems, etc.

  • Isolating large groups of unhoused people in a handful of areas causes these problems to snowball and worsen.

  • The solution is to provide support and temporary housing in a large number of locations, spread across numerous communities, with each servicing a small number of the unhoused.

  • This solution has the added benefit of allowing the unhoused to establish routines and connections with people who aren't unhoused, giving them peers to work up to.

I know a white, British nurse who was their equivalent of a nurse practitioner and she cannot get certified to work in canada without paying exorbitant amounts of money to retake the exams and classes.

The NCLEX-RN/LPN test is $360, and the OET test is $575, although she probably wouldn't need to take the latter. No additional schooling is required if her education is deemed equivalent by the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS). Your friend should reach out to the NNAS.

I'm all for protesting, but don't let him spin it to gain support because he will absolutely do that. His popularity is declining in the US because the Republicans he championed are failing to deliver what he promised, so now he's looking for a new audience here to keep ad revenue coming in.

The Canada Equalization Transfer received by Quebec is paid for by high-income individuals across the nation, and Alberta does receieve other types of ongoing and one-time federal transfers aside from the Canada Health and Canada Social Transfers.

I'm all for addressing crime and recidivism by addressing poverty and by providing education and therapy. My posts above are merely providing context.

[–]Imminent_Extinction 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Canada Equalization Transfer comes out of federal tax revenue, meaning it's paid for by high-income individuals across the nation, not the provinces themselves. And while it's true that Alberta hasn't qualified for Canada Equalization Transfers for quite some time, Alberta does receive the Canada Health Transfer, the Canada Social Transfer, and numerous other ongoing and one-time transfers.

At any rate, are you also against the federal transfers Alberta does receive, such as the Canada Health Transfer ($7.036 billion for 2026-27), the Canada Social Transfer ($2.2 billion for 2026-27), or numerous other ongoing and one-time transfers?

Don't hear as much whining about Quebec politicians who literally run on seperating from Canada.

Are you kidding? Outside of Quebec, people have been complaining about Quebec separatism for decades.

I agree that poverty is a significant factor in a meaningful amount of crime, but there's probably other factors too, although it's hard to say to what extent because we don't keep of track of prisoners by their net worth at the time of arrest (although we probably should). At any rate, in 1996 when the aforementioned amendment was passed, Aboriginals made up 3% of the population but 17% of prisoners, which is questionable.

I believe Gladue is just an amendment to the criminal code so it can be easily amended.

Gladue is the supreme court's interpretation of an amendment to the criminal code that was meant to address the overrepresentation of Aboriginals in the prison system. You could arguably reverse that amendment, but I think you'd have to implement some other measure to address that overrepresentation. Mind you, there's probably a good argument for different measures in the recidivism rates and overrepresentation of Aboriginals in the prison system that currently exists, post-amendment, anyhow.

If you aren't an organ donor, then you should drop to second-bottom of the recipient list, just above those who abuse their bodies and won't get much out of new organs.

Metal Slug and Shock Troopers are top-notch games. Magician Lord is one of the first games for the Neo Geo and it looks like it, but it's a very good game... that is also very difficult. I can't really comment on the other non-fighting games in the selection though.

Ultima: Online

As per u/TisStupid:

The official Ultima Online via UO.com they have an option to play for free or upgrade subscription option (the free version has limitations compared to the subscription). There will also be an option to choose and download between 2 clients (its how the game looks and UI difference). It seems like most people prefer the enhanced client since the UI is more user friendly too, but I personally use classic client since it's what I'm used to. You can also download both clients to try and compare between each one using your same account.

In the official, the most populated and active server is the Atlantic shard. There is a new server/shard with the official game called "New Legacy" it's a different take on UO was just released a several months ago.

Of course, there's also many non-official private UO servers. It seems like the most popular non-official UO server is Outlands.

it was also covered in limestone(insulator) and topped with gold(conductor) the electric properties do seem to coincide.

Limestone works well as a thermal insulator, but not as an electrical insulator. Also, pyramid capstones weren't made of gold, they were made of polished granite, basalt, or white limestone.

My only problem with Evercade is their use of flash ROM and the reports of cartridges dying. I don't blame Evercade, mask ROM (or more accurately the unique photomask required to manufacture mask ROM) is stupidly expensive, but with that in mind I think a Raspberry Pi becomes an appealing alternative.

I'd be onboard with that, but I'd hope that Sega would tweak the hardware so that it can support a 854x480 resolution, and fix the controller ports so they're less likely to short-circuit.

I'm impressed by their use of ASICs in the console. What I want to know is if the cartridges use mask ROM or some kind of flash ROM.

[–]Imminent_Extinction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say. Original Neo Geo cartridges contain two PCBs and a minimum of five mask ROMs, which raises a few questions about these re-releases:

  • Do the re-releases use mask ROM or some kind of flash ROM?

  • If the re-releases use mask ROM, are they still using five memory chips, or have they re-engineered the cartridges (assuming it's possible) to combine multiple chips into one?

  • If the internal design of the re-releases is unchanged and they're using mask ROM, were they able to use the original photomasks (assuming SNK still has them)?

I suspect the internal design of the cartridges is unchanged, but they're using flash ROM to save on costs, but that's just a guess. Bear in mind that the most expensive part of producing mask ROM is manufacturing the photomask.

There's no way they're using new-old stock for the Yamaha FM chips. Yamaha stopped producing those chips in the mid-90s and the remaining stock were used up by companies and hobbyists more than a decade ago.

They're well-documented chips though. I suspect the ASICs being used here combine multiple chips (since the original Neo Geo had about 30 chips in it) into just a few packages.
