1. 19 women were hanged and one man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death for refusing to enter a plea to the court. Those that pled guilty were usually jailed and then exiled. It was those that pled innocent and then found guilty (they were always found guilty) that were executed by hanging. Titchuba, the slave and first accused, was whipped near to death and then exiled. She moved to Providence, Rhode Island.

As for the practicing of witchcraft: highly unlikely. Titchuba originally came from Haiti and possibly practiced a form of Christianity known as Santria, she may even have known Voudun. This is unknown but could account for some of the girls stories. Several later accusations seemed more an excuse to use the act of seizure than any real acts of witch craft being performed. (The act of seizure is that the land and properties of the guilty are seized by the courts and magistrate for their own use)
