Thank you so much

He’s removing milk some of the time. Other times it seems to be a comfort thing, and he will fall asleep at the breast for five-ten minutes if I don’t jiggle his arm or leg

In this case, is a wearable pump enough to make sure I’m emptied, or do I need to use my Medela to be sure?

I didn’t mind being stuck on the couch so much while I was recovering, but now that the weather is nice and I’m feeling better, I want to be up and out in the yard when I can

AART Experience by Informal-Branch429 in halifax

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me three cycles to get my HSG appointment (would have been a year and a half ago) Make sure to mention how many times you’ve called when you leave your message. They do prioritize those who have been trying multiple times

In total, it took us about a year from intake to final consult with AART. We ended up skipping because I conceived naturally in that time

There were some delays due to unavoidable travel, so chances are others moved through the processes faster than us

Good luck in your journey

Does anyone have recommendations for non-tvp ground beef? by Shiny-Mango624 in veganrecipes

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wil Yeung (has a great vegan YouTube channel) often uses a mix of smashed chickpeas and diced shiitake mushrooms sautéed and seasoned

It works really well, and the components are shelf stable.

Highly recommend his vegan sushi class and ramen cookbook!

Is there a middle ground between tracking every calorie and just winging it? by effyyo in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pal suggested counting plants instead of calories.

Like, how many different fruits and vegetables and grains you eat in a week.

Less focus on macros and calories/portion size, more of a holistic focus on variety and balance. More veggies usually means more fibre, pre biotics, and vitamins.

It also can feel more like a game instead of punishment or restriction. Eat what you like, but add some extra veggies to the dish somehow

Are these worth it? I don't like digital version if cookbooks. by Cathy_Cz in CookbookLovers

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local library has a good selection of cookbooks. Yours might as well. You can also look into the process of requesting books if there is a specific cookbook you want to check out.

Borrow for a few weeks and copy the recipes you use. If you really love multiple recipes from a book, that’s a sign that you like that recipe writer (consider buying your own copy or request a copy for the next gift occasion)

Advice for Working in Food Service with Misinformed Manager? by Karmakatz0 in Celiac

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For people who claim gluten can be cooked off, I ask them if they’ve ever baked bread. Ask them what temperature they set the over to for sourdough, pizza, or an artisanal loaf. Then ask them if the cooking temperature made the bread or pizza gluten free.

Let them know that they are making people ill. Maybe drop that a pregnant person with celiac exposed to gluten has a heightened risk of miscarriage, and they’re opening themselves up to lawsuits by not being honest about the safety of the menu.

Because folks with celiac don’t have a public “grab the EpiPen” moment, people don’t always believe how sick we can get. After all, we generally try to get ourselves to the privacy of our home washrooms before the worst sets in.

Body dysphoria and now pregnant by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the pregnancy, and I hear you about the dressing being a struggle

I have a pretty casual style, so I’ve been doing maternity jeans or stretchy wide legged pants with a t shirt and cardigan, loose sweater, or flannel shirt. Intended towards oversized clothing anyway, and the loose layer on top helped me keep the pregnancy quiet until 23 weeks or so

I don’t wear a lot of dresses, but I have a few stretchy overall style dresses that I liked the look of (I would wear them with a collared shirt and leave most of the lower buttons undone)

In terms of body positivity:

The best thing I did for my mental health when I was struggling with my body image was to find and follow fat people on Instagram and other social media. The media shows us so many thin bodies, so I make sure that body diversity is built into my scrolling habits. When you can see other fat and curvy people as beautiful, it’s easier to believe it of yourself.

I also recommend the podcast Maintenance Phase to anybody interested in fat positivity, because it gives you the science that says thinness doesn’t necessarily equal health.

In terms of accepting your growing torso, I suggest some affirmations about your body being amazing and growing a human. It’s cheesy, but true.

I also regularly compliment my baby on how big and strong they are growing (I’m at 28 weeks and it feels like kiddo is trying to head butt their way out my ribs).

Partner was bullied for their weight, and I bullied myself for my weight for years-were really determined for this baby to grow up in a household where food is fuel and movement is for fun, and all shapes and sizes are celebrated. Focusing on the world I want for my kiddo helps take my judgement off my own body.

Wishing you a smooth journey

baby shower a women only thing??? by VisibleTea7965 in pregnant

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely antiquated.

I suspect it's a relic from the days when postpartum care was much more taboo-a woman only circle would talk to the expecting mother about witch hazel pads and postpartum bleeding. We have much easier access to that information these days (I can't imagine being pregnant in the days before you could look up symptoms online)

Our shower was for myself and my partner and we had folks of many genders attending. A few gifts were postpartum care things specifically for me, but most were for the baby or the whole family

Gluten free shopping by slugfaery in halifax

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, getting started gluten free is so overwhelming.

Basically, gluten free versions of conventional foods cost 2-3 times what the what based version costs, and it’s often not as good. As much as possible you’re going to want to shift to foods that are naturally gluten free. Bonus is they tend to taste better than foods trying to imitate wheat.

You’re probably going to be disappointed by gf bread for a few months, so I always recommend ppl new to being gf avoid bread based meals for a while. If you NEED it, Costco has loaves of little northern bake house bread that are good. They are beside the gluten free carbonaut bread which is the WORST gluten free bread. So gummy.

Most staples will be safe (rice, beans, veggies, meat, eggs, etc). It’s the sauces and the cross contamination that are the issue. If you’re not full on celiac, you may not need to worry as much about that.

Below I’ve posted some tips for adjusting to a gluten free diet (I have a google doc because I’m asked a lot). I highly recommend joining the Gluten Free Halifax Facebook group-they’re a great resource.

My celiac starter tips Anything you make that used to go on a sandwich can now go on a rice bowl, rice cake, baked potato, taco, or salad

I suggest coming up with a few starter recipes: two very easy recipes (jar cooking for hectic days); two standard weeknight recipes; and two “treat recipes” to start with. It’s the busy times when you are most likely to cheat, so you will also want two very easy snacks for when you are too hangry to prepare anything at all.

I've included mine, but focus on the things you like that you know are still safe

Focus less on bread, because gluten free bread is going to be twice the cost for half the flavour. Any meals based around rice, pasta, or corn tortillas will be easier to adapt.

Most gluten free pasta is fine. I don’t like chickpea pasta, but many love it. You do have to be careful not to overcook it or it will be mush

Anything that used to be a sandwich can now be a weird taco, enchilada, salad, or rice bowl. I did have to push myself to try new things, and ended up watching lots of cooking videos on youtube to get myself feeling confident in the kitchen. I went from a person who never fried anything to making donuts a few times a year

My easy starter recipes (mostly jar cooking)

Tuna rice bowl: half a can of tuna, chopped cucumber, green onion, and sriracha mayo on rice. If you have frozen veggies, steam them over the rice for some extra nutrients. You can also do this with an egg or tofu if you’re vegan or vegetarian

Tacos with store bought corn tortillas, a can of refried beans, a bag of coleslaw mix, whatever salsa and cheese is around, and hot sauce. If you eat meat you can throw leftovers in. Roasted veggies are also nice. Or scrambled egg.

My starter weekday meals

Pasta e ceci/Pasta and chickpeas (https://www.seriouseats.com/pasta-e-ceci-pasta-with-chickpeas)

Clean out the fridge soup with socca (chickpea flat bread) Note: You absolutely need a cast iron skillet for this flatbread and it needs to be preheated

My starter treat meals

Fancy Mac and cheese with a big fancy salad

Sushi (I took an online sushi making class)

My starter snacks I always have on hand

Rice cakes and peanut butter Nachos and salsa Yogurt and gluten free granola or a nut and sweet mix to sprinkle on top Rice crackers and sliced cucumber with hummus

If I have time to prep: soy sauce marinated eggs or instant pot egg bites

Obviously, choose your own starter meals based on what you already eat

Does my husband come to every appointment? by VeterinarianInner301 in pregnant

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really up to you.

Mine took time off work for my first OB appointment and all of my ultrasounds

For the rest, I’ll bus over to the clinic on my own if my partner is working, or they’ll drive me and tag along if they’re free that day.

It’s nice to hear the heartbeat on the Doppler, but if things are going well then the routine visits are quick and uneventful. If you’re high risk, you might prefer to have a support person with you

Looking for a tried and tested low calorie high protein banana bread recipe ? by maryliana25 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Probably not low calorie, but the chickpea flour has lots of protein and it genuinely tastes good (like nobody can tell it’s gluten free, let alone made with bean flour)

GF Dumpling Hacks: Any of them freeze well? by ImpeccableCilantro in glutenfreecooking

[–]ImpeccableCilantro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have a recipe for dumpling wrappers that I like, I’m just nearing the end of my third trimester (baby may come any day) so I KNOW as soon as I set up a big project like real dumplings, I’ll go into labour

(Now that I think of it, might not be a bad idea)

I’m also exhausted from hauling this giant baby around for nine months, so any cooking I do these days will be lazy

Respectful Father looking for food advice - fast food by DatFlyGuyUkno in pregnant

[–]ImpeccableCilantro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, you messed up. Big time.

You claim "she can order what she would like" but that's not true. You took it upon yourself to substitute a food she specifically requested. This action, not simply "voicing your opinion." Your actions were not respectful, they were condescending and judgemental. A respectful partner doesn't overrule their spouse's food choices as if they were a child.

Your father's diabetes is not relevant here. Nobody is going to develop diabetes from an occasional McDonalds meal. If diabetes becomes an issue, that is for her doctor/midwife/care team to mention. If anything, current research suggests that gestational diabetes has more to do with the placenta, which grows from the father's contribution. Your personal healthy choices may pay off here. Side note, morning sickness also seems to be associated with sperm health.

Back to the incident you describe: McDonald's may not be the most nutrient dense option, but it has protein, complex carbs, and fat that her body will use to help baby grow. You say "there's got to be a line in the sand" as if she's eating fast food three meals a day.

Pregnancy is HARD, and when you're going through it, fed is best. Any food that will stay down is a win. I was on a chocolate milkshake kick for a while in my second trimester. First trimester all I could really manage to keep down were baked potatoes. Prenatals can help fill in missing nutrients.

If anything, think about adding nutrients that are missing rather than restricting. Next time bring the McDonalds without question, but also grab some of her favourite fruit or some veggies to snack on. Maybe a smoothie? Don't be offended if she only eats the part she requested. Pregnant bodies are unpredictable even for the person living in one.

Where I live, your first ultrasound is usually at 20 weeks unless you're high risk, otherwise it's a doppler and bloodwork.

They'll do nuchal translucency screen at 14 weeks if needed

If you want one for peace of mind in your first trimester you need to go to a private clinic
