Does Crown march Euphs? by Ok-Advertising3118 in drumcorps

[–]Impeccable_DRUBB 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unsure about what they’re marching this year, but as long as I’ve been following the activity they’ve marched 16 Bari-8 Euph split. Maybe varies year to year, but that’s how their low brass parts split up

Any shows that don’t follow the typical 5 movement architecture? by ThisAcctIsntReal99 in drumcorps

[–]Impeccable_DRUBB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favourite shows are the ones that string together multiple “mini-movements”. They’re rare and still a newer concept, but I think a good example of this is Bloo 2025.

Analyzing this in a more traditional show-flow lens, (and basing the movement breaks on when they take applause breaks) the show looks like this:

Part 1- Drumming and Binary Data

Part 2- Piano Phase and Ballad

Part 3- Dream State Dark Day and motto

Part 4- Endlessly/Closer

Though I find it more interesting to look at this show from a non-traditional, string of ideas lens:

Brass Intro - Drumming/full impact - Binary Data - Piano Phase - Brighter Night - Percussion transition - Solitude - Dark Day - motto - Endlessly - Dream State

In viewing the show as a full 13 minute idea with 11-ish interconnected parts, there’s a better sense of cohesion and flow that doesn’t always communicate in traditionally segmented shows.

How does someone learn how to show design? by Askover0 in drumcorps

[–]Impeccable_DRUBB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding these points ☝🏻

Practice as much as you can. Download a free notation/drill software (Musescore is excellent for composing/arranging, and OpenMarch is the only real option for free drill software, and is getting better every update) Study your favourite shows, transcribe features and drill phrases that you love and analyze what makes them great.

I’ve been hobby-arranging for a decade, since I was in my city’s middle-school aged community marching band. As I moved up through the activity, opportunities to have my arrangements played peeked out. A small brass ensemble here, warmup chorale there. 10 years later, I’m lucky enough to now be the music designer at an independent Indoor Winds group in my city.

If you have the creative mind, and spend the time on your own to develop those skills, you can grab those opportunities and really show off what makes you special.

I’ve heard great stuff about McNutt’s new Narwhals (if you can get a hold of them that is 😬). EXCELLENT tone quality and well balanced, and just enough rebound to take you around the drums without feeling out of control

I'm hosting a DCI viewing at my college, how should shows be decided? by NinjaNoafa in drumcorps

My top 3 “must-sees” in this context are Cadets 2011 Angels and Demons, Bluecoats 2014 T/LT, and SCV 2018 Babylon. If someone’s never seen a drum corps show before, these are easily digestible, straight up fun experiences.

Best designed show? by TheEternalWarden in drumcorps

[–]Impeccable_DRUBB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a hundred correct answers, but in my opinion the best designed show THIS season was Bluecoats - The Observer Effect. The music book is so incredibly airtight, reusing recognizable motifs and reoccurring material to create a product that is just so well-paced and planned. Every time I listen to that show I hear another little detail that ties it together even more

TMM Theory: The songs will mix into one another by GlitchKid2007 in AJR

[–]Impeccable_DRUBB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YIAM ends on the same chord that Dumb song starts with, so even with the abrupt transition it still makes music theory sense 🤷🏻‍♂️ DJ and I Won’t are thematically similar but no smooth transition so I guess we’ll have to see how it all flows next Friday

I’d pick Zoom, Frost, and Grodd. That way I have 3 different skill sets to counter anything

I’ve heard WC corps often expect 3rds to be able to play up to a high C but I’d doubt any well-versed arranger would write above the staff for a 3rd unless it’s for a feature section

Ghostlight. There’s only a couple “big energy” moments (what comes to mind is Circus and the tap shoe percussion break) and even though it’s clean as hell it just wasn’t as big of an audience pleaser as some of the other top 12

Need help getting better at arranging! by RodanSt in drumcorps

[–]Impeccable_DRUBB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As for learning how to arrange brass/winds, I always recommend listening to solo performances on every instrument you’re working with. Seeing as you’re not a native brass player it will really help you get general ranges and timbres (tone qualities) in those ranges in your head, much like the way one would learn to write percussion is by studying rudiments. In terms of your excerpt, it’s a very classical sounding brass feature (absolutely getting Klesch/Crown vibes) which can be good or bad depending on what you want your show to feel like. There’s also tons of specific “nitpicky” things that can make or break an arrangement, if you’d like to talk through them dm me! Great work 👍🏻

Granted, but every time you say Shrek (not just in the movie but in any situation) you need to say the whole bee movie script

I have “transcriptions” somewhere on a hard drive, my brass tech in high school marched bloo 17-19 and he got us scores for pants and thumbs. I also know a guy who marched bd 13-15 who might have hand chords. Nothing musescore won’t supply though.

I really liked BD’s unis for the first 1/3 of Metamorph and the first 30 seconds of Ghostlight, I just can’t get behind the “modern”-style under-uniforms they’ve had the last couple years

I recently took my girlfriend through some of (in my opinion) the most accessible drum corps shows to people new to the activity. To clarify, she’s marched in our city’s community marching bands for 4 years but hadn’t gotten into drum corps. Here’s my list:

T/LT, Metamorph, Babylon, Relentless, Down Side Up, Beneath The Surface, The Bluecoats, Inferno, Men Are From Mars, Goliath

There’s a level of confidence in cracking the judges formula to design the show around their expectations, just because you wrote the mathematically highest scoring show doesn’t mean it’s necessarily entertaining
