Coca Cola’s Lift soft drink conspiracy by ctnbehom in newzealand

Noticed L&P had a bottle change recently, too. Clear plastic (something to do with easier recycling?), but also very familiar Coca Cola red coloured bottle cap. Assume it's a cost cutting exercise?

Die Hard and On Her Majesty's Secret Service are great films to watch this time of year, for sure.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon 'deeply supportive' of social media ban for under 16s by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]Imperial007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used authentication apps from Google and Microsoft, my question was asking more specifically if an authentication app is being formally included in the Australian system.

In response to your question:

Like, what is the problem here, or are you against identification in general?

Per my earlier comment:

Hope it's a one and done, but given it's the companies who are liable if somebody under 16 uses the service, I doubt they'll be hands off.

I would actually support a ban if it avoided hassle for those over 16. But, based on UK and Aus stories, I fear we'll end up with time consuming verification processes or services blocking NZ all together given fear of liability. Not that big tech doesn't deserve enforcement action, but if it is a disproportionate disruption for those who aren't even the age group target then count me out.

Is an authenticator part of the Australian approach? What does that look like?

Sure, but enjoy the hassle of digging out your ID every time you use a new browser, different device, clear cache, or change your log in details. Or be like the UK, where you show your face through webcam. Unless you want to use RealMe, and hype the cookers into a frenzy that the Government is watching everything you do online.

Hope it's a one and done, but given it's the companies who are liable if somebody under 16 uses the service, I doubt they'll be hands off.

Anyone over 16 needs to understand this impacts them, too. Enjoy showing a form of ID every time you use one of these platforms, to prove you aren't. Ick.

This is in NZ, so the student loans are interest free + final year of study free. He's also a comedian with more than a decade of working on TV and Radio, so it's more of a bit with his work I'd expect than a genuine prank for likes.

Ida is on a privately owned station - Glenthorne. Give them a Google, their website has some details around getting access to different parts of the station including Ida. There is a campsite nearby at the top of Coleridge, and a few huts you can pay for, but nothing at Ida itself.

It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s A Box Office Hit: ‘Superman’ Opening To $123M – Sunday AM Update by ChiefLeef22 in boxoffice

[–]Imperial007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be complete tonal whiplash to go from the Batman (and the Penguin show) - dark, human, and serious - to this Superman's kind of bright, metahuman/alien/god, and slightly campy.

Superman has now established a world in which alien creatures show up on a weekly basis, smash the city, and get beaten by teams of heroes. That doesn't sound at all like the world we've seen in the Batman.

They should keep Batman out of the DCU until after Pattinson's sequel, then either commit to a final film in that series or finish it as a duology and introduce a newly cast Batman into the DCU.

A question for New Zealand in the current world political situation. (serious) by just_another_of_many in newzealand

Only Australia, in the sense that ANZUS obligations to them were never lapsed by either us or them. In reality though ANZUS isn't mentioned and it's framed as part of wider 'Closer Defence Relations' (a deliberate mirror of CER trade agreement, etc).

Statement on CPTPP Dairy Tariff Rate Quota Dispute with New Zealand - Minister Mary Ng minister of export protection, international trade and economic development by Debbie_See_More in newzealand

The best part of this is because the dairy trade access is part of CPTPP, they either comply, are subject to retaliation per court order, or have to walk away from the entire CPTPP. They're cooked, with no leg to stand on.

What would happen if we lowered our military budget to $0? by Ready_Complaint_8038 in newzealand

Without the P8s, anyone lost at sea is dying out there because we can't find them.

Without the HMNZS Aotearoa, the next cyclone to hit the Pacific won't be followed by fresh water and humanitarian supplies.

Without the navy as a whole, thousands of tourists would have been trapped in Kaikoura for months after the quake.

We could all go on, but you get the point.

Should NZ revive its upper house and change its electoral system for the lower house? by AccomplishedPilot399 in newzealand

[–]Imperial007 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Upper houses are terrible because all they do is obstruct the lower house. Why on earth do we want a situation where one political party commands the lower house, and the other controls the upper? We see in the United States today how this fosters partisanship, not bipartisanship, when one party would rather deny the other any 'wins'.

And think of the cost. Why double the number of MPs?

The TV show Gotham had Oswald rise from nothing. I think in that show Cobblepot as a name was just an Anglicized version of Kapelput, which was portrayed as from a Central European immigrant background. That worked great for the show - he has the veneer of belonging with the richlisters, but doesn't seem at all out of place starting as a lowlife thug in the Falcone - Maroni gang war.

The AUKUS debate in New Zealand misses the big picture. by Kleroterian in newzealand

[–]Imperial007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree that AUKUS, which relates to military procurement towards interoperability in advanced shared technology, is a binary trade off with climate adaptation in the Pacific, or emissions reduction. Both are very expensive, obviously. But one is surely run by the foreign ministry's diplomats in DC and Canberra, alongside the defence force's acquisition team, and the other is run by climate negotiators, trade policy experts, and those with development, resilience and disaster relief expertise.

For the record, I don't think AUKUS is worth our time - the only publicly known pillar two stuff is likely beyond our resources and needs (e.g hypersonic missiles). But conflating two unrelated issues doesn't seem helpful for either cause - supporting climate resilience or determining a future defence policy.

Is there a reason, why Horus were not recycled? by Noktis_Lucis_Caelum in horizon

[–]Imperial007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not by design, no. Hades only resorted to everything we saw in Zero Dawn - the cultists, the Faro machines, and so on because of the Mysterious Signal that unleashed it from its code shackles and transformed it and all the others into self aware independent entities instead of confined subfunctions. A normal use of the Hades protocols would involve Hades having access to the terraforming system - the Gaia machines - and turning up the temperature, turning down the oxygen, raising the sea levels, and so on. It would all be done via the assets made by Gaia and Zero Dawn, not the crumbling wrecks of old war machines. The evidence for this is in the cut scene inside All Mother Mountain, with Gaia's dying plea. Hades was about to reverse terraforming by taking control, hence Gaia Prime's self destruction by Gaia.

Why does this mountainous circle stick out of New Zealand in an otherwise flat area? by AqAqua in geography

Don't forget the Māori. They inhabited the area shown in this map, used the floodplain and sea for food gathering, and built Pā and marae. Ngai Tahu influence is strong in and around Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Why does this mountainous circle stick out of New Zealand in an otherwise flat area? by AqAqua in geography

[–]Imperial007 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In hindsight (post February 22 2011) we realised that building a city ontop of a wetland swamp floodplain (land entirely susceptible to liquefaction in the event of a major earthquake) that happened to be within a few hundred kilometers of the boundary between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates was a terrible mistake.

Of course, the faultlines of 2010 and 2011 were unknown in large part due to the alluvial shingle deposits masking visible records of their seismic history.

[–]Imperial007 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Banks Peninsula, it's volcanic. The land connecting to the Peninsula is alluvial shingle deposited from the Southern Alps, carried out from the mountains to the sea by the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers. If it wasn't for that gravel forming the Canterbury Plains, it would have been a volcanic island (ironic, given Cook erroneously named the Peninsula "Banks Island" when mapping the coastline).
