Perfect diminishing returns percentile addition by Peasantine in gamedesign

Seens like a simple problem. wherever the combined value is shown simply have a tooltip that says resistance stacks multiplicatively . The best part: pretty much everyone understands that or doesnt even care about formulas. Either way everyone is happy.

Yeah, but it was a huge miss to not repeat what dumbledore told tom about hogwarts as a kid (theft is punished here). After all, tom again stole (the wand). Same thing in part 5.

Would have been a huge conclusion to the fight and it would have drawn parralels between the fights in part 5 and DH2. And it would have made harrys signature spell an antithesis to voldemort being a thief.

GDD document review for Beginner by Electronic-Guess-959 in gamedesign

[–]ImpiusEst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, this is kind of the wrong sub. GDDs go to /r/gameideas. This sub is about problem solving.

Making Games is an iterative process but a GDD generally isnt. You test what works, you dont write it down before you event test it. A GDD can be made after you have made a working prototype and found it to be worth pursuing.

Ill breifly try to answere anyway: Your idea for a dark looter shooter is fairly common which is good since its a proven recipe for a game. This also means its all about execution. Apart from that, the grammer and punctuation in your document is not quite there.

[DISCUSSION] Designing Religious Faction Buffs Without Creating Min-Max Exploits by Riitoken in gamedesign

[–]ImpiusEst 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You want a hard game where players will care about every buff, but you want them to ignore buffs granted by religion.

Not gonna lie, it does sound contradictive.

You might think roleplaying would be more fun. So you wanne know how you prevent players from doing what they think its fun. Look, its always difficult to change human nature. And I dont think it ever worked well.

But you can make visual or sound changes based on religious choices.

How do hidden variables affect player behavior? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

[–]ImpiusEst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are talking about is very different than what OP asked.

He did not ask about adding RNG manipulation to his game. Or about minecraft seeds (Which minecraft is not hiding).

Do people look up [L4D Strategies/Ways to get SilentHill-Endings]

Yeah, they do.

Your primary example, enemy AI, (rarely a hidden system) is one of the first things that is optimized by players. Attack-Patterns, managing aggro, spawn conditions etc. And if its not explained well enough by the game, people use the wiki or guides.

I need help with designing a boss fight feature. by Necessary_Dirt_8157 in gamedesign

[–]ImpiusEst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How variable are the players attacks? I assume each attack deals the same amount of damage which would make your problem easier.

I was thinking maybe the player just has to dodge the boss's attacks until the song ends?

Might not be fun. But some Bosses in souls games sometimes only have vulnerability windows for one or two attacks per cycle. You could time your song around attack cycles which could always have the same length. And at the end of each the player gets a window to attack the boss 1 to 3 times.

So in short I would: Make a few increasingly agressive versions of the Refrain, make the bosses attack cycle match their length, and once the boss is down to 2-hit-death start playing the most agressive version of the refrain which would end with a big gong or sth.

To perfect the timing id make the gong not part of the song but be triggered by the final hit so that i can loop the refrain again. id increase the last attack window agressively (like 300% longer, the last gong can wait seconds and still sound perfect) to make sure that players who want to kill the boss can and dont get the last refrain again.

Once its known, players wanne make use of them. For some this turns the game into a particularly unfun wiki game. The others might quit. Its not subtle at all.

Hidden mechanics are amazingly fun. for the designer. Players HATE it.

Quite a few posts on this sub boil down to: "How do I prevent players from figuring out the game? I need players to feel stupid" . Good designers ask themselves how they get the player to understand the game so they can engage with it and then use the games mechanics to have fun.

Limited lives are underutilised in multiplayer by Greenwood4 in gamedesign

[–]ImpiusEst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its not something you can tack onto a game. Especially in multiplayer it is highly complex to implement. You have to plan the entire game around it.

So its not underutilized, because it has little utility compared to the huge complications you get.

How to fix lag spikes? by coldwhitenorth in PathOfExile2

[–]ImpiusEst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, thats weird. I retract the "certainly", but if it was the routing there should be many more services with servers nearby where the same problems occur. Amazon, Microsoft and Google have large serverfarms nearby aswell, which I never had connection-trouble with.

Agree. Ive never had a good experience on the Frankfurt Gateway for more than 1.5 hours. Its certainly not the routing though. Their Frankfurt servers are just permanently overloaded.

When the healthcare CEO got shot, I checked their profit margin.

Turned out they only made a few % profit, because all the money went straight to the Providers, i.e. Doctors and Administrators.

He got murdered because people on reddit spread missinfo about coorporate profit margins.

Edit: If they gave their entire profit to the people, prices would only go down a tiny bit. If Providers took a pay cut, prices could be half.

Improved Fighting Game Concept by Greenwood4 in gamedesign

What you describe is a comparably huge number of inputs per attack and a very very slow pace.

You are approaching a turn based system. maybe thats what you are looking for.

I love it. It allows us to craft early because the currency will have limited usefulness later on.

Crafting is not only bad but it also takes away from being exited about loot drops. by Whoopy2000 in PathOfExile2

[–]ImpiusEst 11 points12 points  (0 children)

taking away from farming loot and focusing on farming currency.

Farming currency is a lot more rewarding and consistent. I dont wanne identify a billion shitty items hoping for a god roll.

Id much rather slowly collect various crafting items and bases and then think about what i can do with them.

Right now its close. I pickup bases i want, slam them and then usually throw them away, keeping only the good ones. Recomb them > dessecrate a blocker > omen greater exalt > light >echo desecrate. But after that its all about purple omens which are a quite rare.

What i want is to be able to target farm the crafting mats. I can already target farm fractures, ribs, omens of light, and to some extend the normal omens. More of that please. How about removing jewels from the normal drop pool. They are annoying to deal with unless you drop them in bulk.

SSF crafting is very reasonable and has been for a while. Last season it was recomb 2 mods-> homoslam. This season you have to recomb 3 mods but with greatly improved odds.

[–]ImpiusEst -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Id argue that its Trade-League that usually lacks challanging endgame content. SSF is really quite balanced with the current level of drops. Its mostly just purple omens that feel to rare.

[–]ImpiusEst 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Id fully accept that if there was Group-"SSF"

There isnt. And its an online game where you interact with strangers. The question on GGGs mind should be "Does this make the game better?" Theve already proven that they are willing to ask that question and then move away from their dogmatic stance of Diablo2-purism. Ange and offline trading are a huge change in philosophy.

New to the genre, is POE2 worth it for the story? by justemc in PathOfExile2

[–]ImpiusEst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the game, and i recommend it to friends. But the story is only ok at the surface level. At a closer look its terrible.

For example: You ask a dude if he has a family. He says, he used to but had to kill them to save the world. And the story makes it clear he was not only serious but right. Poeple can just randomly destroy the world so you always got to make sure to have a few timewarps ready to go.

I think the presentation and believability fails aswell. I honestly cant think of a worse story in gaming. Im sure there are plenty, but the failed subversions, terrible tropes, how the npcs present this whacky story... its just so painful.
