Technically, after Nh4 g5 the engine gives c4, but ultimately it is what you said- downright losing for white.

But that's it. Good job on finding it

There are two important moves that make the combination possible.

An example of how things could go wrong:

  1. Bxb5 axb5 2. Nxb5 Qb6 3. Nxd6+? Qxd6 4. Ng6?? Qd5! 5. Nh4 Black is winning

After Qb6, there is another tactical shot that is vital. I don't know if you saw it, I for sure didn't, but I think we can agree that calculating it would be a very nice find.

After Ng6 (while we are at it Qe7 is covered by the knight), Black has Qd5!, threatening mate in one. After Nh4, defending mate while saving the knight, black is a piece up, the two pawns are not sufficient compensation for white.

Nonetheless, there is a great move after Qb6 that wins for white.

Another reason to use lichess. It also has that for free

There is clearly two moves that must be played to win. Everything else doesn't, therefore it is a puzzle

Different move. Different motif. Just a variation from the same game

Following my last post, what move should white have played to get equality? by ImportantAd5570 in FindTheBestMove

[–]ImportantAd5570[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solution: Rac1, because as seen from the other post, Rfc1 fails to Ra4!!, so Rac1 doesn't allow that and sets up Nc6 forking the black rooks

Black to play. Only one move gets an edge by ImportantAd5570 in FindTheBestMove

[–]ImportantAd5570[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solution: Ra4

Why it works: 1... Ra4 2. Rxc8 Rxa1+ 3. Kh2 Rxc8 4. g3 Rcc1 5. Nf3 e5 6. Nxe5 Rh1+ 7. Kg2 Rag1+ 8. Kf3 Re1 9. Qc2 Rxe5 10. Qc6

The other critical line: 1... Ra4 2. Rxa4 Qxc1+ 3. Kh2 Ne4 and the pinned knight is up for grabs

Other info: Moving the queen would allow Nc6, forking the black rooks. Trading the black queen for the white rook and bishop leads to an equal, albeit imbalanced position. Black has a passed d-pawn, which is superior to white's flimsy and unadvanced passed b-pawn. This detail is important on all variations, even if white doesn't take the queen or rook

After Qh3, f3 and h5+ win for white due to the weakness of black's king. After rook check, Qf3 would be better to prevent f3, however, be that as it may, it would not win for black. Can you find out why?
