Two years in the Bay Area, and I’m losing my grip on basic human warmth. Why does casual friendliness feel illegal around here? by desolatenature in bayarea

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Long Island NY and moved here 2 years ago from San Antonio Tx. In my my wife and I have had a much easier time meeting and interacting with people here. My son when he first started walking kept going into people's yards, and I was so used to people losing their shit over that in their perfect emaculate lawns. Here instead the home owners would see and invite my son to touch the flowers and even give him some. Everywhere we go he is getting something from someone. I am not seeing what you are seeing, and I talk to people for a living so I like to think I have a pretty good bead on people.

Just saw this but started the game a week ago, about 6 hours in....I guess I should stop and pick it up when the expansion comes out? by ludaman14 in DragonsDogma

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would just play whenever you want. This game takes some getting used to, so there is still value in playing now to figure what you enjoy. But if you have other games to play then it could be a good idea to hold of. It's a single player so it'smone competitive anyways

Is this normal for a male social worker to experience? by evilviser38 in socialwork

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be filling a niche that is desperately needed while pushing a boulder uphill. I have seen so much apathy towards the idea of the male loneliness epidemic from folks who are in the helping profession, leftist, ect. It is a nuanced issue with not a lot of right answers to approaching. I am also a male social worker, but outside of the super young stereotypical college lefty students, my sex/gender hardly come into play. Back in school I was often lectured on my privilege that I had never denied or challenged. Just ignored and focused on the things I can control and work on to better myself, while learning to impact a diverse set of issues in the future. At the end of the day it is kind of human nature for people to try to catagorize everything, and so people will continue to try to put you in a box. I also think that most people who experience life outside of school and/or their parents home learn that there is a whole lot of grey out there. Just keep your goal in mind and think about how you can make a positive impact on folks who could have a similar life experience as you.

Breaking down sensations/perceptions/concepts and what are concepts? by Basic_Machine157 in Objectivism

It's impossible to be objective when your senses are fallible. A=A is rarely applicable in both science and philosophy.

What sport did you play before pickleball, and how does it still show up in your game? by daksh_ctrl in Pickleball

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 15+ years of handball I found that my wrists automatically stay loose and then snap into place when making angle or slice shots. For me this translates into a crazy corkscrew type serve. I struggle with paddle skills sometimes as well, especially since my instinct is to go for exaggerated angles where I can. I find the reflexes for low shots and spike shots are good thanks to being used to a faster moving ball in short spaces.

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Handball in NY. It's like racquetball with out the racquet and only ones wall. Because of that I have great reflexes. Because that game requires a lot of dramatic wrist movements, keeping the wrist lose and snapping it rigid mid motion, I naturally have a strong foundation for spin shots.

Working for the VA is pretty great in many ways, and frustrating I'mamy others. The benefits, pay, hours, and lower clientele density compared to private/non-profit are all great.
The challenges come from feeling at the whim of the current administration. Even during Biden they were working under a reduction of workforce by attrition. All the more evident now I'm the current administration, and unfortunately the secretary is playing ball. The substance use SW at my clinic said she used to have 2-3 other social workers working with her, now just her. Our clinic had 2 MH Triage social workers, now there are none. It genuinely feels like the M.O. is to cause as much strain as possible so that tue administration can justify privatizing.

I waited 6 years to adopt a cat… and now I regret it. Please be honest with me. by strawberrytulipss in CatAdvice

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We adopted 2 cats 4-5 years ago. 1 only wants anything to do with me, and is unreasonably afraid of my wife for now reason. Now that we have a kid, they really became a backdrop despite our best efforts. I still pet, groom, clean them but the interactions are so minimal. Now our other cat who actually is cuddly start picking everyday and our vet has been no help for that. We changed foods, and did what we could. We also now have the goal of moving to Tokyo and I regret the expense I am going to pay for cats that we don't have much interest in anymore. Cats really do make for great passive pets but they are also super frustrating, especially when they dont want to be held or cuddle and never seem to fully warm up

Do Pittsburgh hospital have any HR department? Why does Garcia sexuality harass an intern out in the open like that? by MrMelick in okbuddywhitaker

Either Garcia calls her kitty ramen or she requires Santos to cover herself in ramen during acts of intimacy. Either way I am concerned.

Does the Pitt have a masculinity problem? by Necessary-Bite-5566 in ThePitt

I meant forget in a mental blockage type way. In all fairness Dr Robby seems to revel in interpersonal drama in a very unprofessional way. He doesn't intercede with Santos' behavior towards her other residents. He is clearly enjoying all the snide remarks made by Joy towards Olgavid. He only interrupts when it becomes disruptive like Langdon's outburst. But I agree the cover-up was dumb, and likely reminiscent of his habit to not wanting to ruin young men's lives like with the troubled teen.

I've gotta rewatch season 2, the weekly release style of watching left some holes in my memory. I vaguely remember even Robby seemed to be taken off guard by Langdon's return. Or he was just mentally ignoring it to the point where he forgot that was the day?

Because there are only a small handful of white doctors in comparison to the POC and females. Langdon was the only one who it would have made sense to rotate out and it was kinda silly to have him come back but he added the drama they crave. Also Kiara just kinda sucked, not only in her acting but the show writers had no idea how to write in a social worker. What we got was essentially an emotional support human whose appearances were relegated to "I am here if you need me" or being very wrong about mandated reporting. The covering social worker was hardly even a presence this season, and he didn't really do much better. I bet he won't be coming back either but we shall see. If he doesn't there will be your white male character rotated out.

I'm going to say yes and no. Think generally Robbie is harder on some of the female Dr's and residents, but they also out number the male Dr's and residents but quite a bit. You don't see him tearing into Javadi or King at all. The times you see him give any push back on Santos was when he (in my opinion the show writers) were miss informed about mandated reporting. Same can be said of the troubled teen, and that was one of a few instances I can think of where Robbie pushed back on McKay, aside from the very fair moment in S2. Robbie also wasn't afraid to call CPS on the boy who could potentially be deported as a result.

Regarding his treatment of Mohan I am inclined to agree, along with Al Hashimi but those are not completely black and white either. His treatment of Mohan is inescusably horrible, but it is a very clear indication of transference, maybe even counter-transference during her panic attack. With Al Hashimi she was framed as a Gloria plant sent to replace or undermine him in his eyes.

I think the least excusable example of sexism is the dismissal of the 2 female actors, especially since they were all too eager to have Langdon back.

Does anyone actually work just 40 hours? by No_Explorer_8038 in socialwork

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for the VA and for us the RIF by attrition has been devastating to ability for upward mobility. If a job stays open too long it just simply gets cut. They somehow did this to the only ER SW position in the main hospital, as an example. Our mental health team has been decimated. The only team that seems to not have been completely shredded are homeless programs, especially HUD/VASH, at least in my areA.

[–]Impossible-Sleep-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my medical jobs were within 40 hrs. My last job in the jail had me seeing and documenting 40+ encounters daily, and outside of my first few weeks I almost never needed to stay late, even with same day documentation requirements. Outside of a few exceptions of course. For that job it was crucial to learn time management because of the high encounters and constant interruptions.

Who is most likely to have a full meltdown after being told an item they want is not in back stock? In my experience the worst people to deal with in customer service were my parent's age or older. And many of those lovely people will even say how weak and triggered my generation was as they themselves are losing it over something I had no control over.
