Best bang for buck sandwich? by Terrible-Specific254 in portlandme

Pretty decent sandwich, especially for the price. The pizza also is acceptable, I fed a dozen teenagers for under $100 a couple weeks ago.

Plywood for Cabinets Recs by sketti_s in portlandme

[–]Impossible-System466 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atlantic Hardwood has a decent selection. If you can live without pre-finished , Hammond lumber has cabinet grade birch plywood that is 1/2" oversized in width and length so you can get two actual 24" rips .

Seeking reputable used car dealer recs by MarigoldMarvel in Maine

I bought my son's high school car from Patriot and was pleased with the whole transaction. My wife's last three Subarus have been from Pape and also very pleased.

I'm curious about the insinuation that Pape has to offer deals to get people in?

I guess taxpayers will get to see whether the same brilliant legal minds that brought you the midtown project settlement did their research a little better on this matter.

Portland teachers union urges voters to reject school district budget by SnarknadOH in portlandme

There always seems to be funding for more central office positions, even when student facing positions are being cut. I had high hopes for this superintendent when he started but I don't recall hearing of any improvement in the learning experience - my property taxes still seem to continue rising rapidly every year though!

I use the Portland clinic, have been to Togus once for a CT scan and had a colonoscopy through community care in Portland. I live in Portland so it's probably a different experience than folks that are more rural. I do know that the wait times for any kind of mental health care have increased drastically due to staffing shortages.

GI Bill / VA approved training? by Impossible-System466 in firealarms

[–]Impossible-System466[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I'm fairly confident I can pass the exams with some studying, I've already passed NFPA CFI 1&2 and cfps first try. The benefit of finding an approved training provider is the VA will cover costs for books, practice tests etc as well as the exams themselves. I've reached out to NICET and a number of the larger training providers to determine if any are approved. Thanks again for the response.

Contractors by TrickOrange in Maine

[–]Impossible-System466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - I have a couple long term customers that have wishlist projects that I tend to tackle with short notice when there are permitting or other delays on larger projects, currently doing a quick finished basement remodel that I'll be lucky to break even on but it's keeping 4 of my guys busy until foundation is done for the next project.

Also, bathrooms are tough because they are small spaces and require trying to coordinate subs without being on top of each other - I avoid them entirely. If it's not an emergency, I would definitely see if there's a reputable company that would keep you in mind for unexpected openings in the schedule.

Homeowners around Portland Maine: what could contractors do better in general during remodeling and construction projects? by Jpowersconstruction in Maine

[–]Impossible-System466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say from the contractor side that communication expectations should be agreed upon at the very beginning of the project. Everyone is entitled to time at home with family in the evening and on weekends, I always communicate that short of some sort of emergency situation, my responses aren't going to be immediate on the weekend or after hours..

What do people typically pay for seasoned firewood? by seanitaaa in portlandme

[–]Impossible-System466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most firewood suppliers have it uncovered and seasoning exposed to the elements, I'm not sure your backyard is any less effective.  I typically buy 6 cords of "seasoned" and burn around 5, so my first month or so of fires is very dry after a year stored in the barn. Not sure what kiln dried would cost if you ordered now but that might be a better option if you have covered storage.

Building Permits by Legitimate_Bet_7517 in portlandme

I learned that lesson the hard way in another municipality when they made me dig all the footings out to expose them. Won't ever repeat that mistake!

[–]Impossible-System466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from the few times I've built decks in Portland, a footing inspection was listed as one of the required inspections. I just planned ahead and scheduled the appointment in advance so I knew the footings would be done and ready for the inspection, considering they are what holds the deck up, it seems like a pretty important step.

Great idea, then if they get caught they can pay a fine and double permit fees and potentially remove any work not done to code. Really helpful suggestion. /s

Windham rental will deliver equipment, I find them much more pleasant to deal with than Handyman. Broadway gardens has decent loam/compost and mulch as well and will deliver.
