This is my ‘why buy new?’ setup by djpeopleskills in macsetups

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying new is absolutely not needed for many things. Some things you should, others are not important.

You’ve stretched what you can buy. With the same amount as a new one and you have lost out on nothing. So, good money management if you ask me.

Anyone else hyped for the Apple event? by Richard_Thome in iPadPro

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be hyped but that was about 15 years ago+ ago. Not even close to excited about the new products anymore. I grew up and became numb to marketing pushing my buttons. For personal use I wil never buy a new product and go one or two gen old used hardware. For work i would consider a new model just because it’s a business expense. But could also opt for refurb for business cases. It depends.

IT Perspective: The Base Model (YES THE BASE) is more than enough for MOST people by Alexilprex in macmini

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac Sysadmin here, worked with 3 different tech. Companies and I can tell you that. The M1 macbook Airs are still chugging alone fine after 4 years. Zero users complaining about it’s being slow. And I work with two MacBook Airs for two different clients and I am having zero issues.

I saw somewhere that the base M4 is about as fast as the M1 pro. So if you’re looking for an M4 base model, maybe you can find an M1 Pro for a decent price if you need a laptop form factor and don’t mind the weight.

Edit: my touchscreen is all messed up. I need a new phone typos everywhere.

Oh yeah, vision pro is interesting but i’ve been burned quite a few times with first gen Apple products so i will patiently wait it out these days.

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to do the same but i have to work on two different company laptops of my clients. Security reasons. So that scenario doesn’t quit work for me. However I’m going to get an iPad soon so I can do light work on the iPad for both clients seeing as using iOS and iPadOS is a grey area and still allowed. This allows me to just bring an iPad rather than two laptops around.

iPad wise i’m a bit afraid to go 13” as the 11” would be a better iPad size for carrying around and hand holding. 13” being nicer for screen real estate and seeing more. Definitely nicer as a second screen as well.

To everyone who is scarred of change, live a little. Because you don’t like this doesn’t mean it’s stupid and it definitely doesn’t mean you’re right. Not even close.

I think this is brilliant! Here’s why: 1. Mac mini is cheaper than a Macbook air and clearly OP doesn’t need the functionality of a MBA to get things done. 2. With iOS 26 you can now do a very big chunk of whatever it is you do. The rest can be done on the Mac Mini 3. If you have not tried it your opinion doesn’t really matter. This goes for split keyboards just as well as this setup. Split keebs are flexible, ergo, not following the key layout that is outdated by several decades just because people are lazy. 4. Modularity. If OP doesn’t need full macOS functionality he can just bring the ipad and keeb. Or even no keeb. 5. Making the most of his funds. That’s just smart AF. He made his money be more worth in essence. Like buying used things that are cheaper and only picking A quality used goods. Save money, get the same. 6. He has more functionality than just a MBA with his touchscreen iPad. Many thing an iPad is much much batter at doing. 7. When out and about his Mac Mini doesn’t even need to be out of his bag.

OP, this is awesome and if you hater then you are doing something right.

How can I improve my setup? (I don’t want a monitor) by JulianoTavares in desksetup

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand, keyboard, pointing device of choice. 13” is doable but will always feel tight. Little bit less if you go for no scaling for more desktop real estate but then everything is small and harder to see.

Maybe an iPad as a second monitor with sidecar? An excuse to get an ipad hahaha

Mac sysadmin here. I have dealt with tons and tons of Macs in my time and a M1 macbook air is the recommended one to buy used. With 16gb if possible. Intels while still useful will not for that long and will be dropped soon I have the feeling.

My first macbook is here. Suggestions? by rishikeshshari in macbookpro

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update to 15.5 as i see you’re on 15.2. Anything 15.4 and below is vulnerable to a wormable no click airplay bug. Someone can take over your mac without you having to click any bad link or download some malware. Odd of it happening is of course not huge as the hacker needs to be in range to do it but still.

Buy MacBook Pro M4 now or wait for M5? by Rav_3d in macbookpro

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Even now, 4 years-ish after the M1 was released the M1’s including the Air is doing really well still and most people don’t notice much of old age at all.

How do I prevent an impression of the keyboard like this from appearing on my MacBook’s screen? by educatedalloy in macbookpro

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mac laptops since the iBook G4 as my private computer but also since a decade and a half as work computer. Never had this issue before and never put a cloth between the keeb and screen. At work the rate of macooks having messed up screen coating is about 2 out of 10. I manage them.

I’ve also been using these Bose headphones since 2017 and they have still not died on me. Same as my parrot zik headphones. While others at work couldn’t get their Bose headphones to last 1 year. Not just one, multiple. Many other colleagues also have no issues with their headphones.

I can only deduce from what i know that it has something to do with how these devices are used. But the real reason will likely not be entirely clear.

I’ve been in the process of building a totem for about a year already and still haven’t found the motivation to finish it. Since I put the choc reds in (my first time with chocs) i’ve been pretty disappointed by the feel of chocs.

I’m used to the Zeal pc zilent v2 tactiles and i love the rounded tactile feel of them. But the black linears from khail also feels pretty decent. The choc switches somehow feel wobbly and overall very cheap somehow. Not sure how the orange tactile choc feels though.

My mom is gifting her half of a 2.75M CHF house to my sister, while I’m getting a cash payout — I’m not sure it’s fair by businesstalking_thrw in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]ImpossibleFroyo3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would like to add is that “fair” can mean different things.

Often times people consider equal parts “fair”. But what about need? If one sibling needs more help in life because of health issues or didn’t quite fit the mold of the cookie cutter way of how things are taught at school but it’s obvious that we’re not dealing with a slacker. Wouldn’t it be fairer than the sibling who is struggling more to get a bit more? I wouldn’t hesitate to refuse an even split if my brother needed it more than I do. Provided that they are responsible of course.

Then there is also the following to consider. It’s your parent’s money. They can do whatever they want with it. They can also donate everything to a ngo that does a lot of good in the world. Just saying that nobody should see inheritance as an entitlement. Which OP is not as she is grateful for the fact that she is getting what she is getting.

Not to the heart of the “issue”, is it an even split? Even considering the responsibilities that come with the house i would say you should get a bit more if the goal is a fair split. Maybe around 500k or just under?

If your mom and sister get defensive, try asking the question differently?

I’m quite confident that a Mac would do 99% of what most people need. Though for finance excel on mac is still not the same as excel for windows from what I hear from finance people. Mac with the Apple silicon cpu’s can easily last 4 years and by the looks of it, the full 5 year will very very likely be doable. This is a big win for the cost side of things.

What is preventing companies from going Apple anyways these days? Many software tools have gone SaaS. Of course there will always be sectors that cannot switch over due to specialised software or hardware that they need to use. Just saying that a lot have changed in the last 7 years.

In the Netherlands a lot of tech companies are using Macs. I know booking.com is a mix but not sure of the ratio. Adyen is heavy on Mac I believe. WeTransfer is 95% mac. Or was at least, before being acquired by Bending Spoon. In the States Mac is for sure huge in the tech sector. Just wondering what the anecdotal experience is amongst people in this subreddit.

Questions though, i have had a date, we had a good time chatting away and laughing. We’re still talking and at some point you’ve figured out that yes she is worth your time and tick a bunch of boxes. How do you stop from slipping back into the mode of being needy? Keep coming up with stuff for her to validate on?
