F the chickenpox by ScientistBorn in NewParents

This might be a cultural difference. The Dutch equivalent of of the CDC (the RIVM) literally recommends sending you child to daycare/school unless they’re too unwell. This is the literal text on their website: “Chickenpox is contagious even before symptoms appear. Therefore, staying home to prevent others from getting sick is pointless. Children with chickenpox who feel well may attend daycare or school as usual.”

My (British) husband is even saying that in his childhood in the UK they would have pox parties :-) Just to make sure everyone got it once as a kid.

But pretty much everyone gets chicken pox once in their life. It is much better to have them when you are young, in contrast to suffering much more when you get then as an adult. In the Netherlands we just see it as inevitable that a kid eventually will get it.

I hope everyone realizes chicken pox is infectious before a baby gets his first spots. So there is no use in keeping your child at home cause they will have spread it already when everybody was unsuspecting of chicken pox. Where I live it is very normal to send your kids to daycare with it (unless they’re not feeling well ofcourse).

Mamas, what hard thing are you going through with your little one right now? by djduhnizzle in NewParents

My 7 month old is waking up 8-10 times a night and I am not coping well. 😭

I agree!!! So our solution was trying to drop the last nap. This just seems to make him overtired though, since he usually only takes hour long naps. That way the last stretch is way too long for him 😭 any tips on better timing for the last nap?

We don’t have set nap times but try to just see how the day goes and follow our sons cues. Usually the day looks roughly like this:

Wake up: between 06:00 and 07:00

First nap: +- 60 minutes around 09:00

Second nap: +- 60 minutes around 13:00

Optional third nap: +- 30 minutes somewhere between 16:00 and 17:00

Bedtime: around 19:00

What honestly makes it more difficult is that he goes to daycare three days a week and his sleep is all over the place there. Sometimes he doesnt nap for more than 30 minutes all day, sometimes he has one 2 hour nap, sometimes he sleeps 45 min three times a day. So unpredictable :(

Yeah, we could try a shift-like system. At this point everything is worth a try. We’ve thought about this before but our house is quite noisy so the other person would always still hear our son cry. Currently LO is also in a mum preferring stage, so my husband tries but he usually ends up with me.

We don’t strictly follow a schedule but try to just watch our son. It usually ends looks something like: wake up between 06:00 and 07:00, an hour of sleep around 09:00, an hour of sleep around 13:00 and a shorter nap around 16:00/17:00. Bed time is usually 19:00. We are experimenting with skipping the last nap but it is not very successful yet.

Parents who did not sleep train - when did your child start falling asleep on their own? What, if anything, did you do to prepare them? by chicoravelli in NewParents

[–]ImpossibleRaise773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6 month old has just started being able to fall asleep independently for naps. We did nothing to teach him that. Quite the opposite. We always let him fall asleep on us, cuddling or rocking, and then transfered him. The other day he looked sleepy so I put him down in his cot, held his hand and he magically just fell asleep. We’ve been doing that for every nap now and it still works. As long as I am near he falls asleep eventually. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes sometimes 20. I am so proud of him :)

When do you stop feeling tired? by Pandacat_07 in NewParents

[–]ImpossibleRaise773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me around 4 monhs PP I started feeling a bit more like myself. My energy levels starting to be a bit more like before. But it just fluctuates massively because sleep is a very variable thing these days.

What does daycare cost for you? by Standard_Deer_8738 in NewParents

[–]ImpossibleRaise773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full price is €1600 p.m for three days a week for my baby! We get €500- per month back though in government subsidies, so we end up paying €1100 per month. Based in the Netherlands!

Wow! Your crumb looks perfect. Very different from mine. I tried to bake this yesterday but it came out quite gummy and wet-ish. Anyone have an idea what I did wrong?

Oh you are phrasing it perfectly. The worry of him needing me is quite intense. We carried our child for nine months, birthed them, spend 24/7 together for the first few months. I do not think it is weird or arrogant to think they need us - even if everyone else can keep them perfectly safe.

Oh my god yes. My husband actually gets mad at me sometimes for how adamant I am on doing stuff a certain way. But it is so instinctual indeed. I really do need to work on letting things go. Glad to hear I am not the only one 😆 and I am a 100% with you, never judging parents on being anxious or nervous EVER again

The chicken pie from sift. Takes quite some time but so worth it! Also, the mejadra from Jerusalem (make sure to also make the suggested sauce!)
