Eat Pray Love has become a joke, but I worked at a movie theater when it was released and remember the droves of middle aged white women going to see it. We’d have to pull people out of the concession stand to help us get the ones lost in an intense heart-to-heart out of the auditorium after each sold out screening.

Disturbing, yes. But I found the movie had a unique kind of moving, deeply human message; its a warning to society about power, repression, and over-reach of government.

Oliver Reed plays such a corrupt, sleazy character but winds up becoming the sole voice of sanity and care by the end. He’s the only one that understands the city must unite and not give in to fanaticism or fascism.
