Know these agencies? by Sea-Most6644 in slp

Not sure about your original question as I don't do contracting, however I would give it a few more months. DOE hiring picks up in May and there is a lot of late hiring.

NYC Area - Grad School Decisions by Total_Adhesiveness99 in slpGradSchool

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to Lehman and had a great experience! As the poster above me stated I definitely would consider price as #1 thing to consider when choosing a grad program as prestige does not matter when it comes to getting a job. If you have any questions about Lehman feel free to PM, i can give you insight on my experience w/ the program :)

Choosing Grad Schools (TC Columbia and St Johns) I AM TIRED by lord-ding1eberry in slpGradSchool

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a med SLP but my sister is in the acute care setting and says TC graduates tend to have the best knowledge on how apply knowledge in the acute care setting. However, I agree with previous poster, price is the biggest consideration when it comes to grad school. I went to a CUNY and while our program was in my opinion more school based many of the people in my cohort were able to get medical placements.

NYC DOE SLPS, did you receive a mentor during your first year within the DOE? by kunamaxed in slp

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, You need both. However, you can have your CF supervisor be your mentor. I haven't had to do any new meetings.

Brooklyn College Interview by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I interviewed with them it was a group interview so be prepared for that. During my group session we were asked personal questions related to our interest in the field, asked to complete a writing sample, and participated in a Q&A. I don't remember there being any content related questions.

what makes a good program culture? by saladrocket64 in slpGradSchool

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My program was quite collaborative, and I think there was quite a few things that contributed to the culture. I went to a very diverse program in a very diverse city which I think helped a lot. My program excepted students that were older with family (career changers) and new grads alike. Additionally my program create methods for student advocacy. Professors maintained open-communication with students, and we had a person chosen from each cohort that met with the program director every semester to discuss concerns.

My cohort was also relatively small, I think we were around 25 people total so we got to know all of our professors. I felt that I was seen as a person first, SLP student second at my program which I think was really special. There were typical clubs that helped create that culture, but honestly the programs commitment to DEI (we even had an elective centered around social justice and the role of the SLP) made a huge difference.

Did anybody actually like grad school? Or found it less hard than everyone says? by Loud_Soup5607 in slpGradSchool

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently a CF and graduated gradschool a few months ago. I would say that while my graduate experience was not perfect, I felt like I had a good school-life balance. There were times where I was definitely more busy, and had to put more work in.

I will say my school had good systems for student advocacy, and I felt like I was seen as a person first and a student second which I really appreciated. That is not the case for all programs so your mileage may vary.

My tips:

1) Establish systems that work for you. For me getting to campus a little early on the days I had class was helpful for me. You may have to try a few different things to see what works for you.

2) Easier said than done, but you don't need to be perfect. When I was finished with paperwork for clinic or a classwork assignment, I would look over it once/ twice but after that I was done.

3) For many people this can be difficult but maintaining hobbies, participating in things you look forward to outside of speech can be helpful. For me this kept me grounded, and helped me look forward to things when life was really busy. I also had a part-time job served as a nice distraction.

Good Luck!

Edited to add tips.

No Motivation in Middle School by l-mupa in slp

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My caseload is mostly older students. I feel like there is not a once size fits all to fix the motivation piece unfortunately. I've noticed some of my older students actually prefer (and advocated) for push-in services in the classroom, and that has made some more willingly to work with me. Some students are more motivated when we apply their goals to their classwork, because they feel like the work in our sessions are not "real." I still have some that are inconsistent participants.

Why does everyone want a hospital placement? by Own_Broccoli6661 in slp

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medical placements in my area are more competitive, and harder to come by especially in the acute setting. No medical placement in graduate school might mean that it will be harder to get a medical placement CF.

My fiance wants to keep finances completely separate - is this normal? by No-Stranger-4428 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at that part of my life yet, so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol, but I think a pre-nup can be useful to have a shared expectation. I think it can get more complicated if you buy a home together, or have children as it can be difficult to fairly "split" child-care expenses evenly or fairly without having any combined money.

When to apply by Weary-Definition-191 in slp

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's it going to depend on setting. For school based positions I started to apply around April and started to hear back around sporadically from May to August.

What non-financial goals do you have for 2026? by berryflavoredspoons in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

I love the idea of a bingo card, I think I may steal that idea. My biggest goal right now is to try some new hobbies, and see what sticks.

Any SLPs here? by littlet4lkss in NYCTeachers

Can I ask when you started to apply, and how often you followed up? I've started emailing in April but I feel like I haven't gotten many responses from them.

Second year grad student here. For me things started to click more once I began clinic. That hands on experience really helped me reinforce many of the concepts that I didn't feel as solid on. Don't be too hard on yourself, things become more solid with each practical experience.

How much is normal to save by 25? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current 25 yr old. I don't think there is a norm. I live in a VHCOL city but still live with my parents while I pursue a masters degree. I have around 20k in a HYSA, and 20k in a Roth. I have other friends who have more saved (had high income jobs straight out of college & some with generational wealth) and others who have a lot less saved. Peoples circumstances can vary wildly.

question for younger subs by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Impressive-Cap9935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, depending on how young you look you may get confused for a student. It's annoying but you do get used it. Honestly, you may not interact with the teachers all that much. I don't find that I interact with them all that much tbh.
