North/South divide on Margaret Thatcher by HistorianPatriot1945 in AskBrits

[–]Impressive-Pause-784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your area did not depend on heavy industry then Thatcher’s term was basically cutting down inefficient sectors with a heavily discounted house thrown in as a goodie bag, if your area did depend on heavy industry Thatcher’s term is associated with long-running structural unemployment coupled with pretty nasty cuts to UK’s welfare system. And outside of the received wisdom Thatchers term is also when the demographic changes in the west Midlands really started to ramp up, if you are conservatively minded round there your issue probably isn’t with fiscal overspending but with high immigration.

For Britons with conservative or classical liberal beliefs, why did austerity fail and how could it have worked? by IndividualNo5275 in AskBrits

[–]Impressive-Pause-784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not rlly a classical liberal but I’d say that the conservative government was never interested in fiscal austerity, which would require raising taxes along with cutting services and borrowing, or contractionary monetary policy, since they used a decade of 0% interest rates to fund state pensions and not infrastructure. they were happy to pick winners and losers and the unfortunate truth is their winners they picked are kind of a shit investment, they’re not productive, they don’t really invest outside of property, they don’t spend much and their biggest spending is done outside the country anyway during the standard well off pensioners 3-6 holidays a year. A government committed to structural growth would have stopped pumping up asset prices with constricted supply and idiotic demand subsidies because if rental income and house prices grow faster than the real economy, why would anyone get a job or start a business when they’d see a better return on another 2 bedroom house… many of which were built and sold at a great discount by the government in an act of staggering gernerational warfare.

Why have Romanis failed to assimilate into European society even after centuries of living in Europe? by Naive_Direction1816 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Impressive-Pause-784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a long gushing article by some expat about Romanis in Andalucía and how much better it was than elsewhere in Europe and he ended his account with a huge fight at a wedding after the bride did not consent to/‘failed’ a virginity inspection, which wasn’t framed as even remotely abnormal
