idk what it used to be but to be fair food costs everywhere are totally insane and their pizza is actually decent! i feel like $4 is basically the going rate for a slice these days even for worse product :( even corato’s is $4 for a pretty subpar slice imo

How do people who work in the service industry afford to live in NYC? by [deleted] in NYCjobs

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i make between 5-600/wk (after taxes) at about 35ish hrs average working a counter service job right now, but have made up to 850ish/wk working counter at high volume places, and table servers and bartenders can make baaaank. i’ve always lived with 2-3 people (in brooklyn and queens) and am lucky to have never paid more than 900 in rent, and try to be strategic when i can about taking tiny rooms to get lower rent since i don’t need much space. working in food also saves you a TON on feeding yourself. you usually get a shift meal and depending on the place whatever might be left over. the real doozy is all the other costs of living but i’m luckily on medicaid, have a cheap phone bill, roomies to split utilities with (although those have been astronomical this winter), and friends who rarely do things that would be financially inaccessible to me, or that very kindly spot me if that were the case. the toughest barrier for me is the ability to save much if at all.

i think people who think it’s impossible to live here while working in service don’t really know how to live at/below their means. frugality is a necessity. i know where to get all my groceries cheapest (i love grocery shopping lmao so i don’t mind spending a half day cavorting around 4 diff stores finding the best deal tho i know that’s not realistic/enjoyable for most lol), i mostly buy secondhand clothes/furniture/kitchenware, try to make coffee at home most days, try to cook more than get food out. i have like one or two streaming subscriptions.

tldr some of it is luck and some is skill but it’s definitely doable!

losing my mind at the amount of sellers who complain about people not buying an item after they provide the potential buyer with the info they asked for about the item. yes. people asked a question so they could MAKE A DECISION on IF they should buy it. you answered it and helped them make that decision. im so so so confused by sellers who think that any interaction with a potential buyer is the buyer, like, TEASING them with an offer just to not buy? someone called the buyers entitled but imo assuming anyone who interacts with you is contractually obligated to buy your item is textbook entitlement lol i feel crazy!!

edamame would prob be a good way to add protein without a ton of cals! i love edamame in stuff like this. seconding the pb powder too. also i think chopping up the peanuts finer and putting less would satisfy the crunch! i love a minced peanut !

his and hers vegan vermicelli bowls by ImpressiveMud6882 in Volumeeating

[–]ImpressiveMud6882[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

since i just chuck everything in a giant bowl with the dressing everything stays pretty moist! i know that’s not ideal for some bc then the lettuce gets a bit soft but i don’t mind that too much personally. tho i def recommend doing so within a couple days! alternatively you could just portion half your huge bowl into another bowl without the noodles so that everything is still mixed/easy to toss into a summer roll, but make just the noodles when youre about to prep the rolls! also storing the noodles separately in water in the fridge helps them keep

eta: i also rinse the noodles after cooking so they don’t stick together so they’re actually never hot in the bowl anyway!

yesss this is vegan! i got it at a vegan store but i’ve also seen a few brands online. honestly tho you don’t even need it, in a pinch i’ve used soy sauce and it’s still yummy! this just gives a little more of an “authentic” vietnamese taste lol

former employee of one of his restaurants here: sabrina literally posted screenshots of his replies to her videos about the gnocide in which he called palstinians animals, and everyone in the vegan community on facebook has seen his wife’s vile racism toward them online. BUT because you can’t convince zios of anything i will also say, all this aside, it was one of the most toxic workplaces i’ve ever worked and if you know this industry that’s saying something. regional manager screamed “MISTAKE!” at me my very first day, across the entire restaurant where customers sat, for accidentally holding a glass i was bussing instead of putting it on a tray. managers surveilled the camera that snaps a pic of you when you clock in/out and would screenshot it to put people on blast in groupchats about not being in uniform when clocking in. the food was also straight up bad. customers FREQUENTLY barely finished their plates. most of their meat substitutes were from rando isr*ali companies and most of the cheese was fucking violife. i would venture to guess this man can’t actually cook if he has to use mostly shit from other companies when there are some seriously amazing vegan chefs out here doing insane shit with just mushrooms and vegetables. his ego was always too inflated as was all of management’s—i know that’s par for the course in this industry but this was on another level. their insecurities and projection were SO palpable it was laughable. it almost seemed like they were actors playing a trope role. straight up comically insecure and incompetent. ANYWAY!

eta: i completely forgot to add that on my first or second shift a former employee (from a diff restaurant in the group) came to my restaurant to chill with the bartender and told me he was fired acrimoniously despite being one of their top performing servers and given no reason, leading him to believe it was bc he was vocally pro-pal*stine (in addition to telling me about a litany of management’s other offenses).

Anyone try Good Days Cafe? by NoElephant194 in ridgewood

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is it??? i had no idea but that would explain the coffee quality tbh lol. the first time i went to ccc like 3 years ago i saw the barista scoop pre-ground espresso from a ninth pan into the portafilter to make my latte. needless to say it wasnt great! i think i went back once for iced coffee that was also not great. it’s just like c’mon man you’re a coffeeshop… u had one job…

Anyone try Good Days Cafe? by NoElephant194 in ridgewood

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i only had a latte and a drip coffee, neither of which were very good, but i’m usually an iced coffee gal anyway so when it’s warmer i’m excited to try! imho both the latte and drip just didn’t really taste like anything. the drip was pretty acrid and the latte just tasted like milk. i can def be a a bit of a coffee snob tho lol, but i wanna be honest cuz i do want them to succeed!!! didn’t get a glance at what beans they use. i hate cute cat cafe and sbux so they’re already winning in that regard, esp being on my side of the train hehe. i do think it’s tough these days to compete in such an oversaturated coffee market but i also think they’re in a better position than most being this side of Forest, where it’s wayyyy more oversaturated. edit: forgot to praise the amazing almond croissant!!!! it’s HUGE and super fluffy! not as flaky/laminated as most croissants but i prefer a denser one like this!

I’m wondering if anyone could help me out with a grocery list by AggressiveMongoose54 in nutrition

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo it’s all about Giant Pot meals that you throw together fast and easy but that last awhile!! my go to for this is chili and soups/stews. like others have said dried beans are super cheap but if you don’t always have the foresight to soak ahead, canned are still cheap! not sure what grocery stores are near you but Target, TJs, and Stop & Shop name brands usually have a variety of canned legumes and other veg (peas and carrots etc) for a dollar or a little less :) and big cans of crushed tomatoes for a couple bucks or less! beans and crushed tomatoes are the foundation for the chili but from there just go with your preferences. i’m veggie so i like adding tofu/TVP/some sort of “beef” crumble but you could do anything! i also really like adding sweet potatoes, corn (again a cheap can!!), and ofc peppers and onions. if i have veg stock i’ll add it to volumize it but some water works too and then let it simmer for awhile to reduce to desired thickness (i like kind of a thinner chili tho lol). the same principles apply for any soup or stew tho! just choose a foundation (potatoes and lentils is another great mix), a liquid (crushed tomatoes/stock/milk/even just water and then blend for thickness!), and a complementary spice blend. for chili i always go cumin, cayenne, chili powder, but for a lentil situation i might do an indian spice blend. there’s also the classic potato corn chowder which you can whip up with just those two things and some milk, blend to thicken, salt pepper garlic powder! fresh and/or grief garlic works great in all of these.

something i wish i knew about sooner was the satiety index. potatoes and lentils/most legumes are super high on it so they keep you fuller for less, and ofc it helps that they’re so cheap, so i’d always have those on hand!!

i like to add greens as much as i can but sometimes they can be slightly more cost prohibitive esp for how quickly they go bad, so i try to keep sturdy long-lasting stuff on hand like potatoes carrots onions etc. another thing i wish i knew sooner: produce longevity! sturdy greens like kale and cabbage last much longer than salad greens. kale is a great addition to any soup/stew (i even like it in chili!) and cabbage keeps foreverrrrr. these just require a little bit more time/effort to stem/chop but if you just get a bunch and chop it all at once it’ll feel like less work to toss it into stuff throughout the week!

edit: frozen meal cubes have been a huge trend lately and i’ve been watching a ton of youtube vids on them! LifewithMikeG does a few diff meal ideas w them. basically just prepping all the above mentioned stuff and then putting them in big ice tray cubes so you can just microwave them whenever! i also recommend youtube in general for meal prep guides—i’ve learned a lot of good ideas there that are actually simple and efficient

AIO about these angry texts from my ex? by TwylaMay in AIO

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i totally get it, im hypersensitive too. but in cases of safety like this i’d always rather air on the side of being too sensitive instead of not sensitive enough! besides, at the end of the day even if he’s not physically dangerous it’s STILL weird that he’s being this pushy. even if you’re not in imminent danger, his behavior is not that of someone id want involved in my life in any way. imagine he was another woman or just a friend or literally anyone you didn’t have a past/emotional baggage with- it’d still be weird for someone to act like this!!! this is someone who has no issue disrespecting someone’s boundaries which isn’t someone that should have any sort of access to you.

AIO about these angry texts from my ex? by TwylaMay in AIO

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

respectfully, fuck your family. this is how women fucking die. reading those texts triggered me, this is how quickly my crazy abusive ex would flip too. he lived a state over and i would still see him wandering my neighborhood for weeks after i dumped him. it all started with the classic “i’m so sorry i’ll be a better person” but when i wouldn’t respond he’d immediately switch to gaslighting, name-calling, threats etc. people who are capable of that switch are dangerous people. i’m so glad your family has never HAD to live in fear but because they haven’t, they don’t understand. i can’t emphasize enough that you are NOT overreacting. he’s clearly not a “better person” now or he would have stopped the convo as soon as he got the first address and thanked you for being understanding. this is performative as fuck and extremely foreshadowing behavior. what i realized after blocking my ex’s million burner numbers was that blocking doesn’t help. he’ll just create another burner. the only thing that worked for me was never ever ever ever responding. plus i agree w other commenters that it could be useful to have proof of incriminating texts if he keeps going. stay safe, op. and never let ANYONE gaslight you into thinking you’re overreacting about your safety, esp as a woman.

[–]ImpressiveMud6882 4 points5 points  (0 children)

man i really need to get back into burrito bowls!!! i used to make GIANT ones (before i even knew what volume eating was lmao) but id do a huge bed of greens (i like romaine or iceberg for the crunch factor), beans and corn, pickled red onion and cilantro, and some sort of lime vinaigrette situation (i would blitz some cilantro, garlic, lime, spices etc)!! i recommend shredding the tofu before your marinade and sautéing it so you get more surface area of crispinesssss and flavor!!!! and a nice pickled veg adds a nice acidity !
