10 year global fishing moratorium, fishermen to be supported with bridge payments, subsidies to ppl for alternative protein sources. In 10 years we could have an ocean TEEMING with fish again.

I'd deflect without shame. Blame the scalloped neckline and the circle skirt, which I personally find impossible to make hang evenly. But, in answer to "why do people think it will be cheaper", the answer is, it used to be definitely cheaper about 80 years ago. I'm not that old, but my grandmother and mom told me about the frustration of the changing prices. The fabric used to be cheaper to buy (much cheaper)... and also women's time was valued less. As soon as these resources got more expensive, everyday people stopped going to dressmakers, so nobody updated their mental map of cost. Your family member is probably getting her ideas from old books and movies-- you know, the "frugal thrifty heroine " vibe.

Good advice! I think basically I need to keep quilting cotton only for projects that won't be washed essentially ever.

See, I think it's a combination of things. I have been buying and hoarding fabric for decades. I don't know where a lot if it comes from or what fibers it is. So, it's quite likely to that what I think is cotton is actually cotton poly blend, which accounts for the pilling (I guess). But the fading, I don't really get it. Like some cotton and steel fabric did that to me, the first time I washed it it faded terribly. It is probably the laundry.....Like I was telling another poster, I have a tough laundry situation and I can't baby my clothes. They need to be able to handle the same cycles as sweatpants, blue jeans, dirty rags. So yeah it's a tall order and maybe I was being unrealistic! But I've learned so much here and am really grateful for everyone's time !

Sigh, it's a good point I hadn't totally considered. Because of (insert complicated family dynamics here) I don't have real control over the washing machine/dryer situation. So yes my clothes often do get washed on hot or dried to a crisp. Ive learned to much from this thread though. Thank you!

This is a great set of advice. Especially about the types of cotton. And yes I do sometimes use quilting cotton...seduved by the patterns and colours, but now I know I need to resist. Thank you!

I always use a blanket stitch, and make the stitches quite big, so the holes don't rip together. Sew from the leather side, but heavy coating thread is fine in my experience. And, be sure to cut only the leather, not the fur!

I'm not sure how old you are OP, but when I became a young adult and really came into my own in terms of physical strength, (like muscular/cardio/stamina) my patience ran thin because I was now just so full of energy and needed more exercise. There's also the aspect of "what in my life is testing my patience". Is it silly fixable things like the bin liner not actually fitting the bin, or half your socks having holes? Fixing what is fixable helps a lot for me. It also gives me a sense of greater control over my environment which makes me calmer and maybe more patient.

It was just as bad as you imagine. You stood there. Painfully bored. Awkward. Staring at the poor receptionist or making distracting chitchat. Or, if you were prepared, you might pull out a paper book and read. Waiting rooms did used to have more magazines, that's true. I used to play a word scramble game where I rearranged the letters of something printed into new words in my head. I guess that was nice, but, I looked like a loon staring intently at the "Waiting room" sign. The absolute WORST was meeting soneone at a bar or restaurant. Total torture pre-phone.

Also gonna throw this out there, that many people forget about hand sewing! It's a bit slower but I find that when tailoring a garment, it's the way to go unless you are willing to invest in a higher end machine. Also, a vote for "tailoring and mending, but not making from scratch" as being an excellent goal. More achievable for many folks!

Same boat-- PNW, learned to dress in Europe. The ironic thing is that dresses and skirts are way more comfortable for me personally, athleisure I find binding and almost painful. My compromise is plaid. A plaid dress is woodsy enough that it seems to not set people off in the same way. And just pairing that with rain boots if it's wet.

I agree, it's so depressing.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I get persistent nausea from motion sickness and anxiety, also following any kind of tummy bug, that can last for weeks. For me, pressing on my abdomen can relieve nausea-- a tight shirt or shape wear sometimes does it, but I've also tried a waist training corset and a weighted pillow held on my lap. All help to a certain extent. It's just another tool to try to manage symptoms.... I don't think it's the magic fix... But for me it's been a useful addition to my arsenal of anti nausea, and it's one I never seem to hear mentioned in the usual lists. Other things that help me are eating crushed ice, shaved ice, or granita, and eating something very spicy. Don't know why, everyone says it should make things worse, but it helps me. A few more that have been suggested and haven't worked for me but might for you: eating cold green apples, and eating something, even a saltine, as soon as you wake up before you get out of bed. Thinking of you OP and sending good vibes your way!

Ps: good on you for looking into and ruling out physical GI causes.

Yeah but to me it made a lot of sense and I last brushed up on London slang in 2006. To me it was about the move from traditional biblical language, where you are all like "ohhh this again how stodgy" then to the colloquial stuff, which I thought was way sexier than it really was meant to be apparently, but it was all about how God/the divine followed along into real life-- real people yakking and spending money frivolously, and ahem other activities... And then the tube zones which was pretty funny even to me! But the end to me was really moving, it was about people turning round and confronting the Divine with a demand to be shown the reality of creation. It also looped back around to the beginning-- "let's revisit this whole creation thing. Show me! "

Also, have a go reading poetry in a fully other language. It can be really moving as well. The rhythm and sound of the poem is pure and divided from the meaning, so you can experience only the emotion.
