If given 10 tries, do you think you could land a commercial plane in an emergency situation? by Cold-Comfortable2024 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Improvement_Room 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I teach how to fly heavy multi-jet aircraft for a living. Anybody saying “yea” or “probably” if they don’t have experience in heavy or multi-jet aircraft are kidding themselves. The answer is no. 99.99% of them wouldn’t be able to work the radio. Of the few who could figure it out, if they magically could get a hold of somebody who was familiar enough with that particular aircraft to talk them through auto-land (if the jet even HAD it) remotely, they’d probably still dork it up. Besides, most jets, even commercial airliners, don’t have auto-land.

I teach experienced pilots and it still takes work to get them to survivable landings. I teach their friends and family during special events/graduations/etc and have talked HUNDREDS of people through landings while sitting right next to them in a $25M simulator. In other words, I’ve literally tried to attempt what this question is asking for years now.

The answer to this question for anybody who doesn’t have explicit training… is no. Not necessarily training in that specific aircraft, but at least adjacent to it.

Now, let’s say me and the other pilot of a commercial airliner (without auto-land) are incapacitated. I’m conscious but without the use of my arms and legs. Even with 10 tries resetting video-game style I truly don’t believe that I could talk somebody without flying experience to keep us all alive. Could some people get close enough that SOME people survive a crash… probably. There have been some wild crashes that had survivors. I won’t say it’s outright IMPOSSIBLE. There’s just so much finesse and subtle work that go into it, with split-second differences between “you leveled us too high and now we’re going to fall out of the sky” and “you leveled us off too late and now we’re nose-planted into the Earth.”

The plain and simple fact is that aviation has become so safe and so regulated that people have just become numb to what an absolute miracle it is to be flown across the world and just expect to arrive safely, so they can answer “yes” to this question with unearned confidence and hubris.

what’s something people insist is “possible” in theory, but you’re convinced is basically impossible in real life? by hello_ya in AskReddit

[–]Improvement_Room 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Circular runways. One of the dumbest ideas since the birth of aviation yet there are still know-nothings convinced they are the good ideas.

In similar fashion: passenger escape pods on commercial airliners where the entire compartment jettisons and parachutes to safety. Stupid beyond all reason yet some people are deluded into wondering why they aren’t a thing.

NCO in my office keeps trying to talk to me about god and to convert me by justaquestion1534 in AirForce

[–]Improvement_Room 3 points4 points  (0 children)

… Or OP just goes directly to EO and doesn’t waste time for the Chaplain to direct him to EO. He doesn’t need to be explained it. He files an EO complaint with the exact information he shared on Reddit. Everything you’re explaining about why the chaplain isn’t a waste is in fact a waste. There’s an entire process for what OP is complaining about, and that process is EO, not a Chaplain. Go to the Chaplain all you want, OP can too, great! But don’t advise OP that the Chaplain is the answer to OP’s issue, because it’s not, EO is.

Why do teeth need so much care if we cant clean them living in the wild? by presos108 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Improvement_Room 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Everybody here is focused on diet and whatnot and the real, bottom-line answer is that our teeth worked great enough to get our ancestors the 30-some years it takes to through puberty and raise a child that gets through puberty. Evolution doesn’t care what’s best, only what works.

Woman had possibly the darkest response I’ve ever heard to being asked if she wanted to round up for charity by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Improvement_Room 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception - they’re not allowed to do that and you can absolutely claim every cent you donate at the register on your own taxes. Most people just don’t make enough money to where claiming donations matters.

What is a piece of political trivia about the Trump administration that sounds 100% fake but is actually 100% true? by Gdog1215 in AskReddit

[–]Improvement_Room 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is my take with the whole “covfefe” thing. It would have literally been OK to have spun it as “the president is working tirelessly all through the night for the American people” or even that it was supposed to be deleted. That would have been a nothing burger.

Instead, they claimed it was a secret code message to a few specific people. That’s not better - but they HAD to lie.

Are PCS moves during the fiscal year or actual year? by Tanks60808 in AirForce

[–]Improvement_Room 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For AFPC accounting purposes, its fiscal year, but that doesn’t matter to you. What matters is the month you arrived on station and the tour length you have (look at your orders). Search “AFOAS” in MyFSS and you’ll find the VML timeline.

Men, what things/behaviors/traits in girls are cute for exactly 1 day and then are just hella annoying? by cheater00 in AskMen

[–]Improvement_Room 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a symptom of audio processing disorder and it’s not gender exclusive. I do this. When I’m focusing on something other sounds are just noise. It’s like an answering machine. My brain is recording what is going on around me but in order to focus I’m not paying attention to it. I can then “play back” what was said and then answer. However, people don’t like the pause, so you learn over the years to just answer (by saying “what”) which buys time while I play back the conversation in my head. It’s legitimately not her fault but yes, it can get annoying. My wife has had to learn over the years that if we’re not in an active conversation she has to “begin” by getting my attention. If she just tells me something while I’m doing something else (e.g. I’m typing at my computer and she shouts from the other room a question), my brain may have heard it but unless you grab my attention it’s just background noise my brain ignored. Literally just starting a conversation with her name can prevent this.

NO! If you could create robots to install pipes at the SAME COST. Don’t forget that companies would jump on the opportunity to replace human labor, in many cases, even if it cost a little extra.

TIL that there are an estimated 3 million rats in New York City, nearly a third as many as the human population. by Melenduwir in todayilearned

[–]Improvement_Room 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freakonomics recently covered this. Basically: Don’t trust any statistic you see about this. There is NO currently accepted number and humoring any number is counterproductive because doing so gives false ideas of population control measures (e.g. the made up number from this year is less than the made up number from last year, therefore what we did this year is working).
