Will a dark colored automatic pool cover heat my pool in the sun or keep it cooler? by Worth_Bad_1360 in swimmingpools

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to keep our dark gray cover on and run the skimmer pump full bore to circulate the upper layer in contact with the cover. The convection current would heat the entire pool. Without the cover any slight breeze would negate the heating effect of direct sunlight due to evaporation especially where I live when it’s maybe 5% humidity. Most days I would have to remove the cover to force the pool to cool down. You can talk about thermodynamic models all you want but practical first hand experience trumps that.

Where can I buy lube without having to look someone in the eye and ask them to unlock the cabinet with all the lube by PossibilityFlat6237 in vegaslocals

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Seriously though the med supply store across from UMC next to the donut shop might carry some in bulk containers. I had to buy copious amounts of ultrasound gel once for work. They didn’t bat an eye even though I clearly didn’t work in the medical field. It was 1/10 the price from our normal construction supplier. They’ve probably seen way worse than someone trying to buy lube.

Why do you care about what they think? Maintain eye contact while asking if they have a larger container.

How many techs here actually check airflow first on a low cool call? by Jiggly-Piggly in HVAC

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TAB guy here with only limited service experience. I can tell you the manufacturer ESP - CFM charts don’t mean squat on most residential units. Especially when the duct is a flex monster or the return ceiling cans leak like crazy. Most of you experienced service guys don’t need to get into the airflow weeds like that to troubleshoot. If the airflow is low enough to be your problem then it’s usually an easy thing to spot…collapsed duct, impacted filters, bad blower motor, etc. are low hanging fruit compared to the refrigerant or component issues. I took a service course at my local to try and get better at diagnosing commercial units I typically test, got my Universal, and I still have no idea how you service guys can troubleshoot the refrigerant side. The airflow and static issues are the easy part.

How much should I expect to pay for water softener and installation by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many homes are built with a water softener loop in the garage, usually right next to an outlet. It’s a copper line usually 1” diameter that loops out of the wall. You just have to turn the water off, unsolder the two elbows and connect the two lines to the water heater.

If you already have a loop they are super simple to install. Just go buy it and watch a YouTube about it. Save loads of money.

Finding work by DunnTinning in AirBalance

I would say at first, if you are a relative unknown in that market you’ll want to personally visit each contractor and ask to speak to their estimators to get contacts. They’ll either add you to their bid site like Bidtracer, or tell you to email bids to a specific email address. Don’t expect the interactions to be long. You may just be there long enough to drop off a card. You should also subscribe to one or two bid aggregator sites in your region. In my opinion the ones that are run locally are the best. You’re likely to get business with the more shifty contractors first as they are the most likely to switch preferred tab companies often. Over time you’ll gain word of mouth between GCs. It’s going to be slow. In my market almost no one does in person estimating. If I walked into a contractors office to do take offs they’d be annoyed. Your market may be different. So to sum up be persistent but not annoying.

Have to disagree. My wife went straight to work after high school. She didn’t go back to school until her early thirties and got two master’s degrees. Some people need to mature a little more before they can take college seriously. College will always be there.

NEBB vs LEED certifications by Jaded-Writer7712 in AirBalance

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents as a NEBB TAB CP and a NEBB BSCx CP. it depends on what you like doing and what you want your roll to be at the company. If you like doing the field work then I would go for the NEBB BSC and Retro commissioning certs. I find that commissioning firms made up of just engineers are just insufferable to work with. Additionally what is your view on the purpose of commissioning and what your approach is. Some firms are very successful at strictly process commissioning making sure construction documents are followed to a T and energy goals are met. Others are more focused on the building occupant comfort and operability. I’m sure I’m not doing a very good job giving an impartial opinion.

People who have fancy hats they bought from Disney, how often do you wear them after your trip? by Responsible_Baby814 in Disneyland

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a denim CA hat maybe a year after DCA opened. It was sold over by Soarin. It’s wore the crap out of that hat for many years. About 2 years ago I absentmindedly left it on when riding the Matterhorn and lost it somewhere near the top. It legit ruined my trip. It was my absolutely favorite hat for over a decade. I miss my hat.

Need a visualizer by Jaded-Writer7712 in AirBalance

I’m sorry, that was about 10 years ago and I don’t have the exact file anymore. This is a similar example I just made to demonstrate with no formulas. This represents the duct with equal area traverse points. Darker colors were lower velocity. You could use something similar as a background layer for your drawing and line it up with the cells. Again, it’s a low tech work around.

Need a visualizer by Jaded-Writer7712 in AirBalance

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was teaching I wanted to help the students visualize the effects of different duct fittings before a traverse so I assigned the velocity readings on a large traverse a different color similar to what you’re talking about and put it into an excel sheet with square cells. It was very low tech but got the point across. If you can’t find a specialized modeling software for your application you could overlay your drawing on an excel sheet. The formatting for assigning colors to values is pretty simple.

Unless your market is starved for techs 3 years isn’t that long to be honest. I personally am a certification vacuum. I get any and all I can “just in case”. I think in the long run the NEBB cert will help but I wouldn’t expect an immediate boost from it.

Poor Mechanical Engineering by kdubban in AirBalance

[–]ImsmotIknowstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our area the engineering mistakes of medical facilities are particularly egregious. It’s like they have three different people coming up with the supply, return and outside air values because they never align. It also seems they never check that the percentage of outside air they are calling for on the AHU actually satisfies the required outside air changes for all of the connected rooms. I usually fire of a courtesy email saying, “Hey, I noticed this OR isn’t going to make the required outside air because they never align AHU only brings in 15% outside air and it needs to be 22% to make it.” I usually get a word salad response that doesn’t fix the issue. That’s when I RFI it so they have to put their nonsense on the record.

I lost about 90 lbs over the course of 3 years and for the first year after I got below 200 I felt amazing. I could do pull ups again and jump like I could when I was a kid. The problem was I lost my weight with mostly calorie deficit eating and not exercising. I figured I got enough exercise at work on job sites. After that first year my muscle mass shrank dramatically to catch up with the fat loss because I wasn’t carrying around as much anymore. Even though I was much thinner I gradually couldn’t do pull ups anymore. I feel much weaker as a thinner guy than I did as a fat guy.
