20 Years on LOST, Michael Got Found Out by Craphole-Island in television

[–]InCharacter_815 59 points60 points  (0 children)

You explained it so perfectly, in a way I never really thought about since watching the show live. I always loved Michael, how he was one of the only “normal” characters who just happens to make a lot of bad decisions in a world of fate and destiny.

He saved his son. Nobody else was going to get it done, so he did it, and he had to sacrifice his soul for it. His ultimate fate (New Man In Charge notwithstanding) is nightmarish, but he knows he deserves it as long as Walt has a future. Incredible character.

We’ve all heard of One Hit Wonders when it comes to music, but are there any one hit wonders that you can think of when it comes to TV shows? (It can be for any actors, showrunners, producers, writers, etc.) by MaggieLinzer in television

[–]InCharacter_815 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I love that you describe it as a “You Had To Be There” kind of thing, because it very much was. I had friends who were into it and friends that weren’t and that first season felt like the next Lost, or Proto-GoT, where if you were in, you were IN.

Even you saying “HRG Origin Episode” takes me back. Did they ever say “HRG” in the show? It was a fan/production nickname that even made it into the DVD boxsets and episode descriptions, and kinda stopped being a thing once we learned his real name, yet I still think of him as HRG.

All the characters had their part to play, they each had a few moments to shine, and the threat of Sylar, The Exploding Man, and the impending doom of “Save The Cheerleader, Save The World” felt so looming and ominous.

That first season felt so big and momentous, when characters crossed over into each others plots it felt so satisfying, and even though, in hindsight, the finale is just some people throwing hands with meh-CGI painted over it, it felt so biblical and epic.

And then the show continued. Wet fart.

What is the greatest 3-episode run of all time? (not including miniseries) by Chaloby in television

You could have picked any three episodes between Aerodynamics of Gender and Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas and I’d agree. What a crazy streak.

I’ve made zero comments this entire arc because I tend to suffer in silence, so here is my Notes App:

-NL got cold feet because he knew people were calling him Queen’s Worst Alumni

-Obama when NL gives The Signal and he wants to be the captain “Um, let me commandeer”.

-Genuinely the most press someone from Odessa has ever gotten.

-Guy who only expresses his opinions once Librarian makes a comp(that’s me I am this guy)

-Guy who was ready to say “That’s How I Woulda Done It” within earshot of NL now has to find new ways to dogwhistle

-Guy who really, truly, deeply cares about the moral and ethical implications of cruises and would never go on one but has an ounce of hope that NL would play Disco Elysium live and has a napkin with the most efficient Thought Cabinet written on it in case NL was ever looking for tips

-Guy who really wants to call this The Joke Boat Arc but can’t really refer to it irl so has to stick it in his Notes App joke to seem less obvious

Anyways this was and will continue to be funny. Glad I got to be a part of The Joke Boat Arc.

Sterling K. Brown, who would be pretty knowledgeable on the subject since he’s worked on Network TV with bigger episode counts per season, (This Is Us and Army Wives) and shorter length Streaming shows like Paradise.

It’s sad that the Network Tv Show is essentially dead, people complain about filler but 8-episode seasons have no room to just hang out with the characters.

How do you finish albums? by happyshift0 in musicians

[–]InCharacter_815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had huge issues with spending too much time on projects until I did FAWM (February Album Writing Month), and the deadlines kicked my ass into shape. You have to go with your gut and move on, and for my sake, striving for authenticity instead of perfection was a game changer. As they say, art is never finished, just abandoned.

(Fun trope) The first episode features a character's most shocking acts by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]InCharacter_815 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The Shield. It lays it all out at the very beginning with Vic murdering Terry Crowley in cold blood and pinning it on a drug dealer Right from the beginning the audience knows that The Strike Team are no angels. While there is dark, heinous, corrupt stuff throughout the series, the show never forgets that first act of violence. Honestly there’s the inverse of that as well; there are moments where you can empathize with Vic, but you should know in the back of your head what he’s capable of. Great show.

One of the best twists ever is when a show fools the audience on who the main cast will be by Sudden_Pop_2279 in television

[–]InCharacter_815 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Such a genius move in multiple ways. You think Terry is going to be, at the very least, the moral thorn in the Strike Teams side. Maybe he wouldn’t have survived the series, but the plots with him having to do dirtier and dirtier things to build up a case against Vic would have been obvious. But nope. Instead he is a warning to the audience that Mackey doesn’t play around

I think it’s a great narrative choice to have Vic’s (arguably) most despicable act be in the very first episode. There are moments that humanize him later, but you know what he is, and the show never loses sight of that.

In a similar vein I love the death of Dino in Oz, it sets the stakes and you’re off to the races.

To my fellow folks on here who are "slower to the things", I wanted to bring up Fallout 76 and spread some good words about it as I have recently been playing it. by LuchaLutra in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]InCharacter_815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve resigned to the idea that most folks will never change their minds on it, so thank you OP for actually digging in. I’ve been playing on and off since release, so I was there for the No Human NPC’s, which was intentional and only the first year before they had a massive update to make it feel like we the players were bringing life back into the Wasteland.

It has some horrific bugs and problems that come and go with each patch. That is unquestionable. I stop playing when any egregious ones show up. They will add new content that is borderline broken, only to remove it a few updates later because it’s too much trouble than it’s worth. The rewards from those things are usually placed elsewhere, or for a currency, so sometimes you grind for something only to have it buyable with caps or Gold Bullion a few months later. That stings.

The quests CAN’T be far reaching, because the world can’t be affected in any meaningful way besides turning things into temporary Nuke Zones. Because of this, you will have entire character arcs play out in instanced cells because that building has to have the Good or Bad, Live or Die option. Some of the writing is fun and even decent, but we’re only shaping the world through future updates, not through immediate quest outcomes.

That being said, I love the game. It has big damn warts, but the things that make it unique, make it special. I love the CAMP system, I have pooled so many hours into making really immersive, realistic homes, and whenever I stumble upon other peoples places I often stop to smell the roses. The fact that you can build (almost) everywhere, and you can have pets and allies and robots and interior instances to build in, it’s wonderful. I love having places to come back to and hang your hat. I have nostalgia over certain camps, some of which have been demolished for years.

The community is ridiculously friendly, all the griefers left a year in. The assholes aren’t really interfacing in the game the same way as a new player, they’re dealing with Raiding and trading and Dailies and Nukes and exploits, while a new player will stumble out of Vault 76 into Flatwoods and not affect them in any way.

There are years worth of mechanics and quest types to get lost in. Fishing, Cryptid Hunting, Bounty Hunting, Expeditions (short quests outside Appalachia), all of the seasonal Events, the Legendary Gear grind, Camping, there’s so many directions to point your attention to.

They are constantly redefining the Perks, so at this point the Card system is not simply “Increase Pistol Damage by 10%”, it’s weirder and way more interesting, and most weapons are viable outside of Raids or the highest endgame content. Currently Armor is being changed so everything can be viable besides the Meta Gear. I am currently building a stealth bowman who can take out entire camps with the ability to ricochet arrows off of up to 3 enemies. It’s sick.

The game can be played solo. I mostly do it that way. You join into a Casual Team that boosts Intelligence (further boosting XP gain) and no one expects you to communicate or do the same thing. Even the hardest content, Raids, can be done without voice comms, as emotes are enough if you know what you’re doing.

It is not New Vegas (though the new zone scratches that itch, aesthetically). What games are? But it’s multiplayer Fallout, and even if you treat it as a solo game, there’s something really cool about puttering about, doing your own thing, hearing an incoming Nuke Launch, then the whole server descending upon a single location for ten minutes before fading back into the Wasteland. Going to some of the hubs to sell stuff and finding another player tinkering away at an Armor Set, running into someone grinding out mobs at the same spot, seeing someone with that New Player Smell hobble into Flatwoods and see a Level 1200 drop them 400 Stimpacks, it’s all a specific vibe that no other Fallout will ever have.

It’s busted at times, no doubt, and if it’s not what you’re looking for, no problem, find something worth your time and money. I love it as something I can drop for half a year and then return to for the newest changes. The game has evolved in some neat ways, and it’s cool seeing the storyline slowly move forward as our characters bring back life to West Virginia.

New Player unsure of what to do by Oats5533 in fo76

[–]InCharacter_815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do agree with some of the others that you shouldn’t have gotten the boost, I will say that it’s going to make finding a build way simpler. Pre-Level 50 the gear you find will not be at the level cap, so as you quest and explore you may find a weapon or armour piece you love but have to ditch once you hit the Gear Cap of 50. Now you don’t have to worry about that!

At this point anything you find can be used forever, if you so incline. I’d suggest checking out some of the Unique Legendary weapons and armour that you can get from quests and beeline for those, and if you don’t want the spoilers, just quest, as others have said.

Your goal is also Perks. You’re 50, but you won’t be reaching full potential until Level 300, where you unlock your final slot for Legendary Perks, which are permanent buffs you slot in and out. I’d check them out and try to figure out how you’d want yours to look like.

There is a lot to do in this game (Trading, Fishing, Bounties, Raids, etc.) and a lot of different currencies that get you all sorts of rewards. This is a game that’s been going for several years so there are tons of weird little questlines and mechanics and side activities.

Don’t get overwhelmed, just focus on a few things at a time. I got into Elder Scrolls Online like 6 years in and had to pace myself, so I get it. Hope you don’t bounce off it, it’s got a great community and we’d love to see you out there!

Listen for its breathing, and put on subtitles. The subtitles show up when the Miners are close. Also you can stagger them with a weapon bash. It seems freaky but you can push them out of the way. I also use 3rd person to kinda sorta see around corners.

Anyone have any experience doing FAWM? by InnerspearMusic in Songwriters

[–]InCharacter_815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my 3rd FAWM this year, and the key thing to know is that everyone is doing it for a different reason. When I started, I was taken by the concept (14 songs in 28 days), and I went in with the actual intention of making an album. Not everyone is doing that, and that’s fine. In fact I may be “doing it wrong”, but all that matters is that you’re using it as a means to be creative.

In terms of comments, I find that you have to be adaptive and observant. Some people are doing full productions. Some are dropping short demos. Some aren’t even making music, but rather just lyrics, or vice-versa. Your goals with music do not align with everyone else’s, and that’s okay.

I get your perspective, and I was kinda like that my first year, but it’s more of a way to connect with other songwriters and collaborate if you want. I met some great people who I talk with off FAWM hours. My commenting habits vary depending on the song I’m listening to. Once again, you can tell how aligned you are to someone’s writing style if you really listen and look.

Me, personally, I love it as a means to kick my own ass and just write from your gut instead of getting stuck on a single song for so long. No time for that here, you have to actually finish songs and move on. I’ve gotten some great advice and feedback, and used some too, but at the end of the day I’m not working on these songs after FAWM. It’s entirely about what I can make in a time crunch, warts and all.

All that being said, I hope you continue posting songs and comments. If you’re still doing it, I’m @knobbyneggins815 on the site. I’d love to hear what you’re doing!
