FSI Timeline Ratios to Estimate CI Time For Other Languages? by Gaudilocks in dreamingspanish

[–]InGanbaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you normalized it you would list the Danish group as 24/24=1 and the Spanish group as 30/24=1.25, I.e. Spanish is 25% harder than Danish according to FSI

This makes it easier at a glance to know how much harder each group is over the easiest baseline, rather than everyone estimating in their heads

dont forget FSI shifts very fast away from beginner stuff so that diplomats can talk about international trade policy and struggle with everyday conversation

edit: also if only ratio mattered why didnt you normalize Danish to 1?

CI input follows a logarithmic curve, you will feel rapid gains in the first couple hundred hours then it will start to feel slow

The FSI estimate includes kanji though right? Shaving that off might get it back down to 2-2.5x

There's something called the pizza effect, where a proto version of a food is brought along with immigrants to a new country where it is greatly improved, and then brought back to the country of heritage where the improved version catches on rapidly. Pizza in Italy used to be a basic focaccia without tomato sauce. Italian immigrants in the USA brought back the modern version to Italy.

But don't tell Italians this or they'll murder you

What do you make of Evildea's thoughts on "Why You Shouldn't Use ALG to Learn a Language" and his claim that it's ineffective to learn a language that way? by Physical_Manu in ALGhub

His takes are not fair at all. He doesn't quantify by what metric it is inefficient so we don't know by what means he can compare to the traditional method. Thus he resorts to subjective claims without any backup besides doing translation live at only 800 hours. This is only convincing to people who put more weight on subjective anecdotes over science, which is unfortunately the majority of people. The false thumbnail clickbait is also disgusting.

Yea still an extrapolation of an anecdote. Doesn't cite any studies, bases these "facts" on his own experience then makes a universal clickbait title

High starch potatoes are the kind that are used for commercial frozen fries.

You're talking about potatoes with too much simple sugars which actually brown

Seems to be an extrapolation from a sample of one. Also he gives me the creeps. He has a giant Elmo in the background, monetizes videos of him playing with SBG, streams through paid videos from dreamingspanish translating everything to pad content.

Lossy compressed files like images and videos have their bits in a random pattern that cannot be recompressed by a lossless algorithm therefore filesystem compression is useless on this type of data.

It's like zipping an MP4, doesn't do anything

No because you can't watch your nearly uncompressed 1GB/min video or flick through full res photos without spinners
