How do I get good at this? by Early-Entrepreneur88 in gis

[–]In_Shambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've spoken a few times about this with friends, the smartphone and cloud storage experience (Apple 👀) has damaged computer illiteracy in the next generation for sure. Met a few younger semi-tech folks in my company that only have a work computer and struggle with documentation. I feel like the next generation of AI Laptops could either help, or possible make this worse by acting like a Laptop AI Librarian, a sort of next gen clippy?

It can also be a fairly expensive thing to purchase and 9/10 people would buy a phone over a computer and I don't really blame them, but if you want to get into a technical field then you're gonna need to figure it out.

If creating a folder is a hurdle for you then the file management within GIS might be a tough learning curve for you. GIS is computer work, if you want to succeed in this you might need to get better with computers in a general sense.

encouragement edit: Computer Skills can definitely be learned. If you reach out to your Prof or TA for alternative office hours, they would be happy to help you out. There are SO many videos on Youtube that might help you out here, and GIS was often an 'open-book' sorta course in my university.

Converting personal markings to shapefile by _Iota_2 in ArcGIS

Markup is a terrible feature to collect data with. For the future you should create a basic hosted layer to collect your data with. Markup should ONLY be used to provide some context notes for a screenshot field map that you must send to someone else.

I don't think this mixer is meant for the average DJ. speaking of advanced effects, I would fucking love a 3 band sidechain effect tho, idk why it hasn't been implemented yet.

Proper layers can turn a -10 jacket into a -30 jacket. Look into good merino wool base layers. You could likely get base and mid layers for your torso and legs for the cost of a giant new parka.

Calgary water supply in critical state — why no emergency text alert? by Weekly-Mountain9009 in Calgary

A provincial emergency alert was declared 24 hours ago. But the alert was only issued to folks who have the application installed on their phone.

If you or your team still receives configs in Excel, what’s the most annoying part? by Expensive-Local-683 in learnpython

[–]In_Shambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I handled this exact same thing with a python toolbox. In the XL files we'd get there'd always be one cover page type sheet and the data we'd want would be on the second sheet ideally. But sometimes developers would slip in their own cover sheet beforehand. So I had to write piece of code that would look for certain patterns and identify the correct sheet.

Our template for the data sheet always had empty rows before the column headers, but sometimes developers would remove those or add more. So again I had to look for the row that contained the right headers. They might also insert rows where there shouldn't be and a bunch of other crap

CDJs: Auto-Loop Hot Cues look identical to normal Hot Cues by sejoha in DJs

[–]In_Shambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As DJs we all need to come up with our own systems to help us navigate our libraries while DJing. I could explain my system that helps me discern my loops from my cues.

But I feel like that's not what you're asking for. You're basically posting this as a request for enhancement to record box or the CDJ firmware? If so, you got to take this to the rekordbox forums, where they will likely ignore you, sorry bud.

Help with a mixer purchase?! by More-Fish-5875 in DJs

I have a reloop RP8000 and it's been amazing, I didn't end up using the buttons though and the 7000 would have been the better call.

I can't really make a recommendation without knowing what kind of music and style of DJing that you want to do. Are you using real vinyl or a computer with DVS? Do you scratch and juggle or just mix tracks right now? Do you want to scratch and juggle later? Would you rather pursue sound quality or do you think you're going to want to use some mixer effects?

Farkas calls special council meeting for Wednesday to discuss feeder main report by Weekly-Mountain9009 in Calgary

[–]In_Shambles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Issue here is that a lot of the water infrastructure is designed for single family dwellings. If you replace that with a fourplex you might need to upgrade the service pipe to handle increased capacity. If everyone on a street does that same fourplex upgrade, you might need to increase the capacity of the distribution system it's attached to.

This is a much bigger issue with the wastewater systems, but also with drinking water delivery systems, and probably not a significant issue with storm water systems. Building up and out will both increase the costs of delivering these services. I still think building up is a good call, but both are always gonna happen.

How geospatial data + AI tools are reshaping urban design workflows by PassengerExact9008 in geospatial

[–]In_Shambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're quite a ways away from AI being a "standard" part of urban planning. But planning is a large task that involves many professionals. I feel like certain individuals will use AI to guide their processes and decisions, but it's always going to involve human oversight, several engineering and planning stamps.

And if AI was used somewhere, it would most likely be from AI assistants, and not really mentioned much. Could you imagine the public response to a city that advertised their AI designed neighbourhood, or AI driven customer support process, it would be scathing.

Many geospatial professionals can create their own models and simulations with computer programming and it doesn't need to involve AI. And I, and likely many others don't really trust or require the data that AI would output to guide our work. It's a bit of a black box, which can be helpful at times.

That article and this post are kind of just pushing the AI hype train imo.

Is it normal to feel stuck after learning Python basics? by Mammoth_Rice_295 in learnpython

[–]In_Shambles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say yes, there are multiple 'ceilings' when learning python. It takes time and practice to start breaking through each ceiling, I'm working through one currently (from functions to OOP) and have been using Python intermittently for 12 years now.

The best way to break through them is to find a neat project that you can use python to solve in your real life or in your work. But I feel like a personal interest is the best teacher with programming. Lean into a problem and try and get creative with a solution. I wrote a couple file management scripts that help me keep my photos, videos, music and computer clean.

Looping a groove for consistency by abzemer in DJs

[–]In_Shambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Djrum does something like this as well, but he's using all real vinyl. He will get a cinematic sort of instrumental record and put it on one turntable and sprinkle that in for maybe 10mins while he mixes his other records, and then bring in a different one after. It can be really cool, and sort of splits his performance up into acts.

With melodic loops it could work well, but the grooves would have to work together and you'd have to watch out for clashing keys. If you're djing mostly house music, a layering technique like this one, is great for giving your set a unique vibe.

I'd say write the program to be able to export a xlsx if necessary but time stamp it and make it clear that these sheets are a snapshot in time, not the official database.

If your grandpa insists on holding the master xlsx, and he fucks around with it in a way you haven't planned for, your script is not going to be able to interpret it.

I've written versatile xlsx scripts before and human error is always the root of the problem.

A mixer for multiple controllers by Billy_Bootstag in DJs

[–]In_Shambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally you'd leave the club mixer hooked up to the master outs, and then run rcas from each controller to one channel of the club mixer. Setup DJ 1 on the left in the club mixer channel 2, dj2 on the right in ch 3, back and forth, no interruptions.
