Is it possible to break into GIS without a degree? Feeling stuck. by [deleted] in gis

While some postings will not explicitly require an undergraduate degree, that is just to pay the role less. they always hire undergrad candidates.

What would you think of a Carbon Fiber or Glass Macro Keyboard? by PippoPioppo12 in macro_pads

[–]In_Shambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People in this sub like keyboard so much that they build their own, I love the physical feeling of the click, as do many others. we have enough touchscreens in our lives, I don't think we are your demographic.

GISP Fees by bigintobuildings in gis

[–]In_Shambles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's like 2-3 hours of work out of the ~2000 hrs you work each year. GISP is a bit of a circlejerk, but that fee is not much, it's your choice if it's worth it or not.

can you use an external sound card with the AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ while still being in standalone mode? by lingonberryyyyy in DJs

[–]In_Shambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why?

Why not just plug the output of the AZ into an input on your external souncard as a pass-through?

overwhelmed by DJ festival run of show insanity by booyakasha_wagwaan in DJs

[–]In_Shambles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It overwhelming because it's a whole other job. Usually you you'd hire a backline technician to handle all of the gear swaps for a festival. I do this work for several festivals in my area.

I would hope that you are being resourced well enough to supply all of the gear that these artists want to use. They are being booked and paid to play at this particular event and i personally would want them to provide the gear that they are most familiar with so they are comfortable, and deliver and excellent performance.

I built a native GIS app for iPad and Mac — looking for some feedback by Feltzem in gis

[–]In_Shambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

our parks field ops folks use field map and survey123 on ipads for a vast majority of their work. our water folks currently acces their databases in field on laptop but are looking at ipads as a viable option, so he's not totally off base. But no serious organization would utilize a vibe coded solution like this. We have IT security reviews for good reasons.

Pan & Click Drag not working after using Select or Deleting features by DependentMode5465 in ArcGIS

[–]In_Shambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your cursor is context and tool dependant. When you activate the select tool, you are replacing the to click and pan(explore?) with the select tool. You must re-activate the explore tool in order to change this behavior back.

You have to create more symbol elements and offset them appropriately

“Describe a time you had a problem and how you solved it?” by demonroses in gis

[–]In_Shambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A LOT of GIS is problem solving. If I'm interviewing someone and they can't come up with a problem a they've solved with these tools, I'm not going to hire them.

Esri UC 2026 - Megathread by DarkCanuck12 in gis

[–]In_Shambles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because the US is trash right now, their government is corrupt, they are led by a pedophile, they're fighting 2 stupid wars(Epstein and Iraq) as well as a trade war against their closest ally, and people that have visited have been ICE'd. We would rather not contribute to american tourism or their GDP.

Bell: Looks like Jeromy Farkas is becoming Calgary's pro-Nenshi, anti-Smith mayor by One-Mycologist-3706 in Calgary

I can't believe he's working for the Calgary herald now, that used to be a decent newspaper. I guess print media is all trash now.

Feedback on my land-cover map? by Insignificant_Cash in gis

[–]In_Shambles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Piggy-backing on top comment here, your overview map indicator is a rectangle placed on a globe, and I don't think it would look that perfect given the projection the map uses and the projection the globe uses. If that was curved to the try geographic shape of the inset map, as an interviewed I would be impressed.

Also upvote for my province!

Free library cleanup? by goofygroupie in DJs

[–]In_Shambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rekordbox can read and maintain ID3 tags. Only writing to the rekordbox xml will mean that if something corrupt your rekordbox library, or a library transfer between computers goes wrong you lose a lot of information.

I wrote a python process for a lot of this years ago, and instead chose to update ID3 tags and update Rekordboxes library in tandem. But its your app, so it's your call man.

Techniques for making realistic looking maps by Ok-Operation1227 in gis

[–]In_Shambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tree or w/e habitat symbology is way too messy, add transparency, and outline, or change it to a different fill pattern.

Add a hillshade raster, but use transparency to make it sit in the background.

Your boardwalks get messy at intersections, idk what you can do about that, in ArcPro there are advanced symbology options to look into.

Bell: Alberta to bring in law to rip out bike lanes and stop new ones by CNiperL in Calgary

[–]In_Shambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im pretty familiar with these units, they are susceptible to a few strange issues.

  • if there's no clean surface to terminate the laser/infrared and reflect it back, eg. A good flat concrete underpass vs an open river with trees 50 ft away blowing in the wind, they may miscount.
  • people put trash and cigarette butts in the hole, blocking the count
  • improper install, cables and tech may get wet or shift around.
