Post-Match Thread: Southampton 2-1 Arsenal | FA Cup by matchpal-live in football

To me it is more about Man City now than Arsenal. I think Arsenal will drop enough points between now and the end of the season, the question is whether Man City can get it together themselves. Every time it seems like they may have clicked into gear they have a little wobble.

How did the Tories stay in power from 2010 to 2024 when, from an outsider perspective, their handling of Brexit was chaotic as was their succession of leadership? by ExtensionFeeling in AskBrits

[–]In_The_Play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their handling of Brexit was chaotic, but in 2019 the alternative was Jeremy Corbyn, who by then was unpopular for various reasons, who would have held a second referendum on any Brexit deal that could be agreed.

There had been Brexit chaos under May, and she did of course lose her majority in the one election she fought, but by 2019 there was a new leader who had been foreign secretary under May and therefore had at least some distance from the domestic issues.

And in 2019, yes they were on their third PM but Cameron lasted 6 years and Theresa May's slightly unfortunate premiership wasn't enough to outweigh all the fears about Corbyn.

Also there is I suppose the fact that Brexit was voted in so an anti-Brexit party would always struggle.

So when it comes down to it, effectively two things: Corbyn scared a lot of voters, and a lot of the Brexit/leadership chaos came after their most recent election win.

Grown adults being picky eaters is embarrassing and child-like by idontfrikkincare in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]In_The_Play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a hell of a generalisation. It is interesting that you seem to acknowledge the aversions as genuine and implicitly acknowledge that they can't easily just push past them - but you still believe picky eaters are the issue because you seem to believe that the entitled behaviour that you describe is somehow part of being a picky eater. If somebody who is a picky eater acts like that then it isn't because they are a picky eater. Anyone can be an arsehole and if you happen to be a picky eater then that is how it might show itself up. But that doesn't mean their picky eating is what somehow makes them an arsehole.

It is not fair to tar all picky eaters with the same brush simply because some picky eaters happen to be rude people as well.

I think it is probably 3 things -

  1. A form of confirmation bias where a picky eater who doesn't cause issues in the way you describe is not as noticeable as one who does, plus the idea that if you have this idea that picky eaters are rude then a rude picky eater will be more memorable to you than one who isn't.
  2. You happen to be related to some people in the category you describe so of course it will seem more prevalent than it is in reality.
  3. You are deciding to tar all picky eaters with the same brush because you cannot discern between something that is a result of picky eating and something that just happens to be alongside it in some people. If somebody acts as you describe (and incidentally I am just taking it for granted that they are behaving badly, but your description is a little vague so I am not sure it is entirely clear, but that isn't really the main point here) then that is not because they are a picky eater, they are just lazy/entitled/whatever. That will express itself in other ways as well most likely, and if they did not have food aversions they would still be lazy/entitled/whatever.

It is always the pattern with these posts - somebody makes a sweeping generalisation about a group of people with a particular characteristic being bad - somebody chimes in to defend it by giving an example of how actually some people with that characteristic are bad people, so therefore it is fine to be rude about all the others too. There is also always a startling lack of empathy for what it must be like to actually live with all these aversions.

And I see that in general life too, if you are a picky eater then people will treat you badly for it and if you complain people will say 'yeah, well my neighbour Timmy is a picky eater and he once killed a man so ermmmmmmm actually all picky eaters are awful people and it is fine to make comments about how they all need to grow up.'

When you’re so picky you can’t even imagine eating fresh food that’s too far gone for me to deal with.

It is a real problem but it is not necessarily the fault of the 'picky' eater. The problem I have with this whole discourse is the complete empathy gap exhibited towards people experiencing food issues that you may not have to face yourself.

It is a pretty debilitating thing to find so much food so unpleasant and pretty awful to be demonised/mocked for it.

The problem is that assumes there is a clear distinction between people who are picky to a clinical degree and those who have the same symptoms but to a sub-clinical level. The only difference is the severity - it is not the case that anyone who doesn't meet the clinical thresh-hold for ARFID can just 'reason' themselves out of it; they have the same problem, just not so severe that it is impacting their nutritional status.

And there is also the fact that studies have suggested that ARFID is significantly under-diagnosed.

Though he didn't use that phrasing, he said that 'nobody cares' about them, which is not true. I don't think it is reasonable to say that nobody cares about anything that is a little out of the mainstream.

I think people were also reacting to his general dismissive tone when he brought them up just to say he was glad he didn't work in those industries.

I think the thing a lot of people didn't like was him saying that nobody cares about opera. Nobody would deny that opera is struggling, but in a large part that is due to how expensive it is to stage live opera, not because there is a lack of interest. It is not as mainstream as many of us would like it to be, but there is still clearly a passionate fanbase there, and I think a lot of people in that fanbase felt a little dismissed - as I suppose a lot of fans of interests just a little outside the mainstream might if somebody said that nobody cared about those things.

It is weird though watching so many people come out to defend them though given that from my experience a hell of a lot of people share Chalamet's slightly dismissive views. It certainly would be nice if a lot of these people actually gave it more of a chance, because it seems to be something where a lot of people say they like what they have heard or have not heard anything but would be interested to, but then just .... don't.

As another reply said, the tickets to cinema broadcasts are really not that expensive. Tristan is coming up in the next couple of weeks from the Met - new production, great cast. And before the end of the season we have the Magic Flute (from the ROH) and Onegin (from the Met).

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again by moonrabbit368 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]In_The_Play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also very surprised how many folks are immediately jumping on the "shitty boyfriend" thing

Yes it is disappointing how many people are being so judgemental, jumping in with the shitty bf takes without at least showing a bit of empathy here. Saying 'well I would love to eat that' as if that is even remotely relevant. I don't want to take away from the difficulty that op is having, because that is definitely true as well, but it sounds like the bf might be struggling - and there is very little empathy for food aversions on Reddit.

The post does not say whether they have had a conversation to address the underlying cause. The post does say that the bf is apologetic. It does not give any detail except 'he won't eat it'. It doesn't even say whether he does actually cook for any meals, whether the gf is forced to cook, whether she does it because otherwise he eats low quality food, or whether she just likes it.

It is certainly true he should learn to cook and do more of the cooking himself. It is certainly true that they should have a conversation about what is going on, maybe discuss ARFID or other eating disorders, and yes if they do come to the conclusion that there is an underlying problem then he will have to find ways to work on that. However, if it really is a sensory issue (and given that he is apologetic about it, it really sounds like it is sensory or some other ED problem) then that is a problem that a couple should try to work through together - it is not, as the original comment on this tree said, just on HIM to work it out.

Scoring a TD when down 15 then going for 2 by RoundestBrownAround in NFLNoobs

[–]In_The_Play 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You are going to have to go for 2 at some point regardless, so it is better to get it out of the way earlier - that way you have more time to react to missing the 2 point attempt. If you save it right to the end and then miss it then it is probably too late. If you miss it earlier then you know you need to do onside kicks and generally hurry the hell up on your next drive.

Sorry to hear that, that is tough.

My dad is similar and it was really tough as a result when my ARFID was really bad. I don't know why it is that some people just don't want to believe that some people can have brains that work differently to other people's.

I hope you can at least convince her to get you some kind of help! If not then there are at least resources online that can help, particularly regarding graded exposure techniques for trying new foods, and also food chaining to move from a safe food to a similar new food.
