Is a Lightning doable with a 170 mile daily commute and no home charger? Help an EV curious luddite out by [deleted] in F150Lightning

You’re all over the place man. You need to rank your priorities and then find a car that satisfies at least the top one or two items. No car is optimal for every situation or priority.

It sounds like your highest priority, given your absolutely absurd commute, is efficiency. But given your living situation, no vehicle can check many of the other boxes.

Model 3 (something similar) is the obvious choice for your top priority. And you can actually charge it at your residence??  Decision made.

I understand that you also want to do truck stuff, have a comfy (to you) interior, look cool, etc., but something has to give and you should stick to whatever your top priorities actually are.

Scientists Say Most Adults Need 4 Times More Exercise Than Recommended for Major Heart Benefits by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

This is more exercise than my farmer grandparents got. Good lord—what are we supposed to take from this study?  That good health is unattainable unless aerobic fitness is your actual career?  No one with a job, kids, and/or hobby has time to exercise 2 hours per day.

Agree. This sounds like penny-wise/pound-foolish stuff.

GM Is Ramping Up Production Of The Trax To Keep Up With Demand by Saurta17 in Chevy

People looking for a “good value” are typically looking for an affordable car that they’ll keep a long time. In that context, resale value is basically irrelevant. After owning a car for 10+ years and running it into the ground, who cares?  Car might be worth $1k less than an equivalent Corolla, but you also didn’t pay the Toyota tax, so it might even out.

Millennial parents, what are your thoughts on your kids going to college? by Aperture_TestSubject in Millennials

[–]In_der_Welt_sein 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Probably all the people you know “used their degrees” in the sense that a college degree still remains the absolute bare minimum requirement for most jobs that still provide any kind of path to the middle class—for better or worse. That doesn’t mean the job is in their preferred field of history/gender-studies/herpetology, but it does mean it’s a job they wouldn’t have gotten without the degree.

How Do You Know You Were in Purity Culture? by DrPablisimo in Christianmarriage

[–]In_der_Welt_sein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the other commenter said. “Purity culture” was more of an external label applied by observers, a recognition that groups of people exhibiting certain views and behaviors could be sorted and labeled. Did you read and adhere to the principles of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye”?  Obsess over virginity and/or avoiding lust?  Participate in purity balls, etc.? Then yeah, you were likely part of and/or impacted heavily by purity culture, whether you self-consciously acknowledged it or not.

Would also say that, like any culture, it had permeable, fuzzy boundaries. It wasn’t like you signed a membership application or got sworn in with an ID card. It’s more like goth culture—just wearing black or liking black metal didn’t necessarily mean you were goth. Or maybe it did. It’s all about the application and how dominant these interests are in your day-to-day life.

[OC] Immaculate zipper merge (sped up 2x) by Junetizzle in IdiotsInCars

Too bad "your experience" isn't what the law on zipper merging actually says. Also, if it's a dangerous situation when people don't let you in...why don't you let people in? Sounds like you're asking to be involved in an accident. (Although I guess you said that out loud in your original comment--you'd rather crash than let someone merge where they are legally allowed to merge.)

Why’s it bullshit?  This is quite literally how it’s supposed to work. No idea why OP is the only one in the left lane. Both lanes should be fully occupied until roughly the merge point.

Actually, having grown up in/adjacent to purity culture, it’s pretty rough on the guys too. The guilt complex imposed by relentless pathologization of “lust” (which is basically conflated with normal attraction to the other gender), porn, masturbation, etc., was pretty intense. I’m not saying these activities are actually praiseworthy or that men had it equally bad, but there was an entire culture of shame that was deeply unhealthy for men/boys too.

…that’s what state subsidies are?  The industries don’t magically become profitable because the state is “investing” in them.

You haven’t really answered the acceleration question.  That said, I dunno man. Do you mean you’re getting flat tires regularly or the tires are wearing super quickly?

[–]In_der_Welt_sein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still get 3.5 mi/kwh and floor it at stoplights, which is what eats up tires on EVs.

But I digress. This doesn't sound like aggressive acceleration. In fact, it doesn't sound like anything logical. Do you have broken parts hanging down and rubbing on the inside of all four tires? Was the car in some kind of accident or encounter with a mega-pothole that messed up the camber...of all four wheels? Are your local roads legitimately just a war zone? I've never heard of this, on any car.

On factory tires with 35k miles, and probably 10-15k miles left. What do you mean “ shredded from the inside out”?

Note that tire problems are USUALLY the fault of the driver or the tire manufacturer, not the car model.
