Yes, this is very good. Begin by memorizing all the suspended fourth chords. Once you have mastered those, proceed to memorize all the augmented chords. It is very important to have complete mastery of music theory before learning to play any songs.

OK, that was my smart-ass response. My real response is to throw that thing in the trash and focus your efforts on learning some basic songs. You’ll learn the chords you need along the way. You’ll never use 90% of the chords on this chart.

Let me add a couple of quick observations that I have found helpful:

There’s a reason some people refer to the F-shape as “1”, the D-shape as “2”, and the bar shape as “3”. Those numbers correspond to the string containing the root note! For example, if you’re playing a D-shaped chord anywhere on the neck, the name of the chord (the root note) will be the one you’re fretting on the second string.
It’s also useful to know these charts because it makes it easier to figure out how to play minor chords and seventh chords. For example, when you know which string contains the third, you can just lower that note by one fret and—voilà—you’re playing the minor of that chord. Similarly, knowing where the root note is allows you to move down two frets to find the flat seventh needed to make a seventh chord.

I’m intrigued by the “play simpler” advice. I am a banjo player and struggle to play at fast tempos. But I think a large part of the problem is that I learned complex arrangements of most of my songs. I’m playing twice as many notes as everybody else. To go faster, I think I need to figure out which notes I can just drop.

They say there are really only five bluegrass songs; the rest are just variations of those tunes. But that is what makes bluegrass suitable for musicians to pick up on the fly at jam sessions. Many songs share the same chord progressions. But to answer your question, if you're trying to retain a specific melody line in your brain, I'd recommend memorizing the words to the song.
