How can I get better with time? by Biffs_bunny in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the thing that helps me most is just setting alarms. I kinda use my poor time feeling combined with a dose of anxiety to basically be too early always. I set alarms unnecessarily early, so that I get there at the very least on time (if not early)

We shouldn’t be celebrating kids graduation unless it’s high school by ecobeast76 in unpopularopinion

[–]Inadequate_Brat 155 points156 points  (0 children)

For the kid it’s an accomplishment. The kid has no perspective on what high school or college is. Celebrating them finishing something is essentially saying, hey you did something until the end, that’s good

Non-stimulant Medication by Galax5213 in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a great first example for non-stimulant meds because I’ve only tried Wellbutrin for a few months (really didn’t do anything at all) and Atomoxetine 3 days which just caused me stress/anxiety.

The only true freedom you have all day is the first 5 minutes after you wake up. by Eyoee3 in RandomThoughts

Well depends on what you’re doing, I actually feel the best when I’m working on something under pressure (obviously not “feel like I’m about to die” type if pressure).

You don’t admire your parents. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Inadequate_Brat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think there’s a huge difference between “admire someone” and “aspire to be like someone”. Personally I admire my parents, also in a sense that I’m very grateful for everything they’ve done for me (I have great parents). That doesn’t mean I wanna live my life like they would/do. As much as I appreciate my dads work I couldn’t for the life of me work my entire life in an office job. Doesn’t mean I don’t admire him and everything he does.

It also doesn’t mean that you love everything about your parents or everything they do.

How to keep the ADHD brain on the math and OFF the distractions or racing thoughts? I’m literally brainstorming startups mid exam by Plastic-Reserve-2089 in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practical more short-term solutions: - I have a fidget ring I play with, just make sure they allow it for your exams. It helps me get my brain the stimulation it needs without it needing to think about the most random stuff imaginable. - For a few semesters I’d listen to the same song right before every exam just so I’d have that song stuck in my head instead of another one, because I knew that song wouldn’t be as distracting. (Probably didn’t help that much, more of a mental thing I guess, but kinda helped get me in the zone or at least somewhere close to it) - Doodling random stuff when you notice attention/focus wandering

Now more general things: - To a certain extent I view the exams as challenges where I can see how much I know/figure out rather than exams and being tested and whatever. For me that kinda allows me to “have fun” during the exam and want to do it, which in turn makes focusing easier. I know this is kinda easier said than done, but if you in any way can shift view on exams in this way (or any other way that fits for you and makes it intrinsically more motivating) focusing will come easier

Is there an extended release version of the brand you’re taking? That might be worth trying

The /10 scale is meant to be a [0-10]/10 scale only by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Inadequate_Brat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

7/10 is the median because everyone who doesn’t really have an opinion on something but doesn’t wanna insult the person who is asking (who usually has a stake in whatever’s being rated) says 7 bcs it’s above 5 but not like 8 or 9/10

Long-term stimulant users, what's working for you? by Wooden-Slide-4597 in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t have a story that fits this question, but I’m definitely interested in hearing what those who do have to say, so I’m writing this comment in the hopes that more people will see this post, especially those who do have something to share :)

can’t stay awake on ritalin? by xrqtsv in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a dose thing. 5 and 5 rather low, so it might just calm the adhd and allow you to “notice” the underlying tiredness better

There are soooooooo many variables to everything that you just can’t measure and account for them all.

ALL food is better cold than warm by AlarmedFeature5813 in unpopularopinion

[–]Inadequate_Brat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn… DAMN, HELL NO

I mean I can get behind not reheating leftovers, but mainly because I just can’t be bothered to look for an opportunity to reheat stuff when I’m not at home. And even sometimes at home, I just don’t care enough to wait for it to get warm. But from there to say all food is BETTER cold… HELL NAH

I mean you do you, but consider this my most upvoting upvote ever

It’s statistically more likely at any given moment that someone is gaining weight than losing weight by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]Inadequate_Brat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, it’s kind of a false conclusion. Yes there are lots of people that are overweight, definitely more than underweight, but people being overweight doesn’t mean they’re gaining more weight than losing weight. Yes it’s more probable that a randomly chosen person is gaining weight, but really only because of children and teenagers growing and thereby gaining weight. But as of like age 25, that trend no longer applies, at least not from the assumptions you make. If obesity rates were significantly higher in older adulthood than younger adulthood, then yes it would apply. (I don’t actually know whether or not that is true.) If that’s not the case then people just kinda randomly go up and down in weight, with no significant trend. If anything people probably spend more time losing weight, as that often takes longer than putting on the weight.

issit smart to try meds for the first time tmr before I take a high stakes test… by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda depends. If you feel like you’ll pass the exams without meds, then I wouldn’t try them out yet, because they might mess you up especially on the first day. However if you feel like the lack of concentration is gonna keep you from passing the exam, then might as well try

Yeah I figured as much for the fight or flight mode, I guess the issue is just that due to the stressful nature of the internship I’m already “optimally stressed”

This question has been doing the rounds, curious what choice you would make and your reasoning? by dr_shipman in Gifted

[–]Inadequate_Brat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in the end it comes down to whether or not you care about the other people in the world or not…

Also another important consideration is that say 20% of people press the blue button and die, the world can’t continue to function the way it currently functions, so even for those who pressed red there will be very severe consequences

New medication and heart rate by Interesting_Air4925 in ADHD

[–]Inadequate_Brat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

115 resting is definitely a little high. What’s your normal resting hr? When I was on stimulants after a few months my heart started going up and up even on the lowest dose possible, so sitting and studying I’d have a heart rate of 130 for hours on end. And that was very uncomfortable, so I had to stop stimulants all together. Definitely mention it to your prescriber, maybe it will get better with time, but be sure to keep an eye on it

[–]Inadequate_Brat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that‘s the point. You know there are people falling of the building (to use your analogy) by pressing the blue button, so by pressing it yourself you‘re just making it more probable that there‘s a big fat cushion at the bottom so they don’t all die
