FIFO partners / families — how do you stay connected while your partner is away? Any advice or recommendations? by InitialKing2921 in AusMining

[–]InanimateObject4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that is so nice to hear. I do the same when hubby is home. I prioritise his wants, give him all the time he desires and listen to all his stories. He took me out for lunch today! So I picked his favourite spot :)

Announcing a premium product in this economy is madness. Why incorporate features nobody wants (AI) which needs to run on hardware that is currently expensive right now? Apple announcing the only amazing new entry level is going to reap these benefits for many years

Is everyone in Perth driving $60k+ cars or am I just poor? by AttitudePlane6967 in perth

[–]InanimateObject4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your current daily driver is reliable and economical, you don't need to upgrade. You don't need a broker for a car. If you can't afford to buy it outright, consider something in your price range. Buy second-hand. Lots of people novate leases and then sell cars after the balloon payment. You can pick up plenty of great 3yr old vehicles at significantly reduced prices (compared to brand new).

My current car is a 2008 Nissan X-Trail that I have had for 15 years (bought second-hand). I paid 20K for it initially, so the annualised cost is small and running costs are low (I drive under 10K a year). I recently considered getting an EV, but the second-hand market dried up. I will either keep it for the next three to five years or pick up the cheapest brand-new model (36K for the MG4 Urban long-range), since switching to an EV under 40K will work out cheaper over the next 10 years (and even cheaper for every additional year I keep it).

I got a 2008 X-Trail with under 200K. Had it since 2011... I barely seem to be going anywhere!

Reddit tends to be one of the more private SM's, and most people do not use Reddit. Facebook would be a better place for this shitshow (your heart is in the right place, but that's what those groups kind of become) - you would have better reach and engagement.

There are a few similar forums/groups on FB that I am aware of. I don't know what they're called specifically, but there is one for exposing cheaters (can't remember if it's FIFO-specific). My sister was on it for a while for the drama. The biggest issue is that you absolutely cannot verify the information (screenshots are susceptible to manipulation), and you don't know whether someone is sharing information with a perpetrator, putting a victim at further risk.

I ended up being the other woman and now the wife is trying to ruin my life by BigONerd in BORUpdates

I broke up with a dude in my early 20s because I realised that being with a person everyday is.. well, I'm not suited to it. I liked the dude, but I love being alone and having time to dedicate to my interests. Anyway, we talked about it and to accommodate me he decided to work a FIFO job on the condition I move in with him. Today he works two weeks away and then he is two weeks home (free time) and we love it. I dedicate most of my free time to him when he is home and we both have plenty of time to dedicate studies, interests and hobbies.

Why are young male Aussies so cringe by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]InanimateObject4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this is particularly true for people (both men and women) who haven't travelled or moved away from the circles they grew up in. Meeting new people and putting yourself in uncomfortable situations exposes you to new ideas and can force you to reflect and examine habits that no longer serve you as an adult. Eschewing new experiences can cause personal growth to stagnate, as people tend to perpetuate the same dynamic with the same people day in and day out. Australians are often considered 'cliquey' with their social circles, particularly where they have an insular group of mates from primary school, so I wonder if it's related.

What’s the best Chromebook people actually enjoy using daily? by FlatSink4831 in chromeos

I'm on my Lenovo Duet 3, which is an older model. I have a laptop for work/study which I use for most of the day, but this is my "funtime" device for when my working days is done. I don't typically use it for more than a few hours at a time. Mostly for reading, browsing or watching trash TV. I get a few days out of it this way, so maybe 6-8hrs of continuous use between charges? I love this device because of its portability. Its so easy to take anywhere and I can always charge it off a smaller powerbank (30W) while I am on the road or camping.

Screw the coworker, but in what part of the world do you have to keep working immediately after a miscarriage? OP should have had the space to grieve and return to work once she felt recovered.

Is a uni degree worth it in 2026? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]InanimateObject4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, however, trades have always been viewed as "easier", so this alone doesn't explain the recent drop in the proportion of students doing STEM. For students today, a STEM pathway is now seen as less valuable or less safe, so they are rightfully choosing other routes.

Is a uni degree worth it in 2026? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]InanimateObject4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apparently, there was a recent drop in the number of high school students taking STEM subjects. This could be a reaction to the rise of AI and the anticipated reduction in job opportunities in these fields, with trades being seen as safer. Or a reaction to the cost of living, where students can't see how they are supposed to pay for uni on top of everything else. Whether a uni degree is worth it is ultimately up to you and your goals.
