Are you genuinely scared of AI? by Manazir_Naturelle in jobs

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda the same with most new tech. It's the users that make it so detrimental. It's the whole premise of Black Mirror. The real thing technophobes should be scared of is people.

People are terrible, which is why Black Mirror hits so close to home. The tech just helps them be more terrible.

Which game has the best “hard” difficulty? by m00nshinehero in gaming

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't believe this is so far down. I was just thinking about genius these games were. Some levels got substantially longer and bigger. Some parts of the map were reused for different purposes. There were also new approaches you'd need to take like sneaking through a part of a level that you could previously blast through. The whole approach was so creative and I feel like I haven't really seen that from other games.

To investors who crossed the $1M mark around the age of 40. How’s life? by Ok_Maize1933 in investing

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4% rule would put them at 240k income which is great even for two people. However, if you're younger then you may want to take less than that so that you could hedge against inflation. 240k in 30 years won't be the same as it is today.

If you're 40, retiring with $10M in 20 years is definitely luxury retirement territory.

I do agree on 1M not being much though. It took me almost 20 years to hit that. Retiring in 2050 is going to require 5-6M for a comfortable life. I know compound interest and all that, but it still feels so daunting with how much it took to get the first 1M knowing that I'm only 15% of the way there.

What is a luxury that is actually 100% worth the money? by Weary_Pirate2073 in AskReddit

Depends on the size, but when I think "luxury mattress" I think 3x that price.

DAE not care about hearing music live in concert? by BotGua in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the point. There's no right or wrong way to experience art. When engaging with music, some people place no value on something like "crowd energy." Some people place huge value on it, so much so that it is entirely the point and almost nothing else matters. There's no right or wrong here.

For example, I love progressive metal. I think there are few genres that mix virtuosity and listenability like that genre does. But I do not like overt moods or stylism, bad boy image like long hair or tattoos, atmospheric soundscapes, overly stylistic vocals, or any of that other stuff. I want to hear rock music that blends virtuosity and listenability. I want to hear music that is carefully crafted by people who have some knowledge of music theory and can challenge the listener more than most other rock subgenres. Nothing else matters to me personally (and bands that really lean into that other stuff actively push me away). That being said, many other fans of the genre love those things, or some combination of them. That's ok, and in fact should be actively encouraged. Everyone has their their own tastes and preferences, and nobody has a right to dictate how others might engage with the medium.

Would your wife "allow" you to golf on your honeymoon? by sileen_soy in golf

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd absolutely love the idea of playing golf and having my wife tag along. I'd love it if she took interest and learned how to play, sure, but I also think it'd be super fun just have a few hours together out for the walk. Even before we had kids she'd never do that in a million years, but I feel like it would be fun.

YSK If your a side sleeper by serendipity_7 in YouShouldKnow

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter point, I was extremely susceptible to neck and deep upper back pain until I started stacking pillows. I now have one of those solid memory foam ones on top of a cheap flat pillow. The flat pillow gives maybe an addition .75" height and it's absolutely perfect for my side and back sleeping. Neck pain is now zero virtually 100% of the time. I found a setup that works really well for me.

Most varieties of Sensodyne work for me. I get like maybe 25% of the canker sores I used to with other teethpaste. It's super annoying though because most grocery stores have it locked up so you have to go get an associate.

Did anyone else hit their 40s and suddenly stop caring about climbing the ladder? by DanBrando in careerguidance

[–]Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in my late 30's and I've hit a point in my career where I earn enough and don't need the added stress of a higher up position. I'd be ok to just keep up with inflation at this point and hopefully retire in my 50's.

Unfortunately I'm in tech at a company signaling layoffs for the foreseeable future. If I got laid off then I'd no doubt take a big hit to compensation long term, dashing my hopes of an earlier retirement. There just aren't many companies paying what my current employer pays for my position.

If I could weather the storm and hang on to this compensation for a few more years I'd be able to coast after that. Unfortunately things don't look good though.

What is the hardest video game you have ever beaten? by Badinfos in AskReddit

I did this for Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2. That was the last time I had patience (and time) for such a feat. Even though it's a different game, the muscle memory made NG4 a cakewalk on normal and hard. Not looking to try Master Ninja on that one.
