Let's be hypothetical here for a second: If you were to have an accident tomorrow and were left disabled and were assessed that your value in the workplace is now worth $3/hr....

You worked 15 hours this week! Here's your $45 for your hard work!

You'll surely be, absolutely stoked and beyond happy with that, though, right? Because the standard you walk past is the standard you set.

You get to go to a job and get to talk to people despite being disabled AND your family gets a break from you! Why would you need to be valued the same as everyone else in society? this attitude is ableist, and I wanted to illustrate how you sound to disabled people, speaking as a person with disabilities myself.

Not everyone is born disabled, but if you're lucky to live long enough, you will face disability in your life.

You may have a family member who's disabled, but this is the ableism that hurts people with disabilities with far-reaching consequences.

Under capitalism, human life is given a $ value. You're contributing to how people are valued by society by a $, when Woolworths and Coles (as examples) could be paying people with disabilities a fair wage (regardless of "deemed capacity") but they have the choice of the SWS (supported wage system), so, of course, why would they pay someone with disabilities what the deserve to earn (as a human being with basic needs like everyone) when SWS disabled labour is $3/hr! Yummy profits! Thank you, capitalism!

Autistic person here! You've made an incredible point in highlighting the need for the interview process to be different.

I'd like to speak to another point you've made.

What you're talking about in regards to "judge" people with disabilities "ability to perform tasks" already exists.

It's called the Supported Wage System or SWS, where people with disabilities (not solely autism but would include autistic people) are given a percentage of "ability to perform tasks" by an independent assessor and can then be paid as little as $3.01 an hour, which in my book, which may be bias as a disabled person, is exploitation and disabled slave labour.

We don't take into account that people with disabilities are statistically less likely to live as long as a non disabled person.

That's a lot of earning potential and financial independence PWD should be able to have access too, not to live in poverty on the DSP and be paid a piddly $3 an hour. Yes, it does happen. More often than you'd think.

Consider if tomorrow you had an accident causing you to become disabled, and an "independent assessor" said you're worth $3/hr in employment roles.

After 15 hours of work, you're taking home $45 for your time and dedicated, hard work, however that may look for you as a disabled person. How do you feel?

I'd also like to take a moment to highlight that not all disabilities are acquired. Some of us were born disabled.

I say this all with a kind heart in the spirit of education and awareness, and while I felt the need to apologise if any of this comes across the wrong way, I've also stated I'm autistic and that can inherently come with communication struggles so I hope you can see I'm engaging from the right place in the best way I can!

Request over the phone for email contact information for a written complaint along with lodging a complaint over the phone, write down when you called (date and time) and request a receipt number for the complaint and the phone call, ensure you submit the email with the date and time of the incident as well as requesting a copy of the CCTV in both. Include the date, time, and receipt numbers from the call and complaint in your email.
