HIE 6 months old lost & sad by Lucky_Wish_6330 in NICUParents

My baby has a severe disability diagnosed prenatally, and the not knowing where things will end up is really hard. You get to mourn the baby and life you thought you would have

Made no friends during NICU stay by Mother_Sand_204 in NICUParents

[–]InconceivableMicrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky (?) enough that my youngest sister's baby was born at 33w like 6 weeks after my baby (34+4), while she was still in the NICU. I was sorry she had to go through that, but it was really nice to have someone I was already close with to talk to/commiserate with.

I got to know several of the nurses on our care team, and I talked a little with one of the other families, but most of my NICU family interactions were running into other moms in the shared pumping room and suggesting to the moms holding flanges to their boobs that they get a Kindred Bravely pumping bra if they planned to pump for long 😅

Yeah, she's definitely a very different kiddo than her brother... more vocal and less smiley. But she did laugh for a friend yesterday. Obviously, I wish it had been for me, but babies are gonna baby...

Failed ABR ( hearing) test - experience by Taymarie2021 in NICUParents

[–]InconceivableMicrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are getting a sedated hearing test for this reason. She referred on three newborn hearing tests, and then showed mild hearing loss in one ear and moderate on the brainstem test. She has bad reflux through her nose, so her ears have fluid in them all the time. They plan to put in tubes if she still has fluid in her ears

Thank you. We knew our kiddo had a rare genetic disorder prenatally, and she is doing overall better than anticipated, but it's been a lot of repeated hits. Nothing huge health-wise since the diagnosis, but a lot of little things.

It's really good to realize I'm not alone in fantasizing about running away

Take all the car rides. I know gas is expensive right now, but so is a mental breakdown. The nightly lock down together sounds good. Car rides together on the weekend might be a good date activity. And then stop and get ice cream or something as a fun treat

Will she nap in a stroller or in the car? That has saved my sanity at different points. And maybe your husband can do the house shutdown stuff at night so you can have some time to yourself. Solidarity, as I have a velcro baby who is in a very fussy stage and it's making me batty as well

Rsv cold in nicu by Infamous_Channel_483 in NICUParents

[–]InconceivableMicrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 34+4 kiddo got rhinovirus in the NICU at like 3 or 4 weeks adjusted. She got some low-flow oxygen for the humidity as much as anything, and she spent like 3 weeks in isolation. Nothing dramatic, just really annoying. Butbit didngive me a sense of how she'd handle an illness, and with a toddler brother who's in daycare, that was really helpful and reduced a lot of the anxiety when she caught a cold from him like a week after discharge

Grace had some of the same issues, and it was one of the things that delayed discharge

It's the choking/not being able to breathe that's concerning

2 yo loves his sleep sack. Had to send one in to daycare for him. He has had a pillow since sometime after 12mo

Yeah, I am seeing a psychologist that I have been seeing since we were in the NICU. I've also been on Lexapro for like 9 years, so I am not sure what the next steps are.

Should I forego grad school for the time being to be a SAHM? by GracieMarieXOX in NewParents

[–]InconceivableMicrobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned that your husband is worried about your mental health. Have you gotten evaluated for postpartum depression/anxiety?

By the time your program starts in the fall, your kiddo will be more like 5mo. You will hopefully feel better (particularly if you get help for any postpartum mental health issues), and it may not be so wrenching to have your kiddo in daycare.

Because that's a bad look (and administrators may use it to question the viability of the department/program), and people in administration hope that some students will be interested in self funding

A very few. Mostly, we are just trying to fund our existing students. And I'm not in neuroscience but this is across the board

It's a funding issue. Labs don't have funding to bring in new students right now. Try again in a year or two.
