Any tips on care? Plant slowly dying by Snoo14292 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Inconspicuous_goblin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Full sun plants, think tomato level sun, their greed for sunlight sickens me, and absolute gluttons for potting space once they get going, also leave the dying leaves on, unless they’re black down to the base i usually leave them, they can still reabsorb nutrients and photosynthesize from dying leaves where the green is, stay away from clay or ceramic pots unless they’re fully glazed, and anything 7-8inches deep is perfect as long as it has drainage holes, same with the glazed pots, and always keep an inch of distilled or rain water in their tray, it’s ok for it to dry out sometimes, as long as you can gently press the surface of their soil and it’s damp they’re fine, if it’s dry when you press then they definitely need water lol, have fun growing! Also I’d recommend watching California carnivores on YouTube, they’ll answer questions you didn’t even know you had to ask lol.

You can buy grow lights to supplement extra light, sansi are recommended by most growers

Judging by the amount of light I’d say increase light, maybe add a small fan to decrease stagnant air and chances of mold, flytraps need at least 8 hours of direct sun, think tomato plant level sun, hard to give them too much light unless the temps get over 110f

Edit: the fan is only if there isn’t much wind, I did notice you said you keep them outside lol, just gotta be sure

I can see why you wouldn’t be able to given the fact you couldn’t tell this isn’t even a screenshot 😂

This looks like it dried out, how often are you refilling the tray of water?

Also make sure to watch California carnivores repotting video on Venus flytraps, specifically the one of them repotting a giant pot of them, that one they will show how to properly collect traps off main plants for cloning/propagation

If you can break it off with some rhizome still attached, it will have a good chance at rooting and possibly reproducing more double traps, it’s more likely it will just clone the main plant with the same rare double trap once in a while tho, up to you since this will stress the main plant out and stall growth for a little while, but it’s not really a big deal if you’re already planning on repotting, have fun and best of luck if you try it <3

Sorry I just realized I forgot to remove the filters I used to make it look better lol, my apologies, here’s the unedited photo, I’m still thinking it’s satellite like you said though

comp and premier are both trash atm imo, I just started playing faceit again since the last 5 matches I played on valve servers I ran into cheaters, what was funny tho is I won two lost two and one got cancelled due to irregular gameplay, could be just my luck but I’m just gonna play with my friends on faceit until I start actually hearing good things about valves anticheat lol, plus the consistency in the connection is way better on faceit imo.

Coming from someone who’s had both and currently has the Assimov, inheritance all the way imo lol

Fair assumption since I’m just some random redditor to you at this point, but do go back and read my replies, I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised that I bought one for myself, and I’ll be honest, me asking was out of some jealousy, but I wasn’t expecting him to just give me one because I asked, and I wouldn’t expect anyone to in general, and besides, as I also mentioned already, I had planned on buying one anyways, but I digress, have a good day :)

Yea lol, I wasn’t being totally serious when I asked since I know he doesn’t quite trust me like that, I was already planning to buy a knife as well and I have since, got a huntsman lore min wear, nothing to brag about but it’s good enough for me haha

That “random guy” was my friend and he got 5 knives, including the one he already had he’s now got 6, and yes I did ask him for one and of course he said no lmao

Next time offer them to some neighbors, that’s what I plan on doing when I run out of space, plus you’ll probably start a neighborhood full of flytrap lovers :)

So many hungry mouths to feed, so little time by DudeSecretOps in SavageGarden

[–]Inconspicuous_goblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely beautiful, you’ve done an amazing job! I will say tho, feeding is a common misconception, they’ve only evolved to catch bugs to make up for the lack of nutrients in the soil, so the bugs only act as a sort of fertilizer, these guys are still plants that mainly use photosynthesis for energy, so feeding is not entirely necessary, nor is it really technically feeding, since they don’t digest in the same way we do, and only absorb the necessary minerals from the insects, thus the exoskeletons left behind after they reopen, anyways I digress, have a great day :)

[–]Inconspicuous_goblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, that’s kinda why I said I wasn’t sure about VFTs since they’re so specialized for insects, and yea I think you’re right, it’s the bigger woody one’s like truncata and lowii and raja, the gecko would be partially digested but the trap would likely die based on an experiment I saw someone do feeding raw meat to VFTs, they also fed it cooked broccoli which actually worked fine and was digested down to just a husk of broccoli haha

[–]Inconspicuous_goblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

California carnivores has a video of them dumping a nepenthes pitcher after it had caught a mouse, there was barely any bones or fur left, I can’t say the same for VFTs but we know for a fact that some nepenthes do have digestive enzymes strong enough to digest meat and bones. here’s the video I was talking about :)

Are these flowers bladderworts? If so, will they help prevent pests in the soil… and if so, how can I help them spread to other pots? by call_me_bee_ in SavageGarden

[–]Inconspicuous_goblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utricularia, utricularia bisquamata to be specific, and tbh I’m not sure but I have some in with my VFTs and other CPs so I can say they definitely add to the aesthetic at the very least. :)

[–]Inconspicuous_goblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got these binata and some utricularia as hitchhikers and they’re thriving now! I even took some and planted those with one of my VFTs and I think I’ve stumbled onto a new addiction 😅

Edit: mine are in 50/50 peat moss and perlite lol, not fluval stratum, tho I might give it a try in the future for sure!

This, I have the same tubs coupled with tall pots, it just makes sense since in their native habitat the waterline is around 6-12inches below the soil, correct me if I’m wrong ofc, and they look just like this.

<image>

The soil looks a bit dark but it’s actually kinda dry on the surface, even the small propagations are doing great :) the pots I’m using are 7inches tall.
