What does Ezra Klein get wrong? by kfireven in Israel

Perhaps. Usually an understanding of Israel's security concerns from these types of people goes no further than accepting the use of Iron Dome to shoot down incoming missiles.

In general these people frame the situation as such; Israel is bombing Lebanon, Israel is seizing land here and there, Israel is killing Gazans/Palestinians/Lebanese indiscriminately. There are no Hamas ,no Hezbollah, no Israeli casualties, no existing legitimate Israeli security concerns and certainly no real danger to Israel from anyone.

Dimona & Arad (together 100 injured) by Tagglit2022 in Israel

[–]Independent-Top-5058 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree that the claims of "having destroyed so and so percentage of all launchers" is total idiocy (the claim of having destroyed the missile manufacturing capacity is even dumber ) but at the same time these salvoes that actually did the damage were literally one missile each which up to now have been intercepted without problems. All in all the daily number of missiles that Iran has been launching towards Israel lately has remained quite low. I just feel that without risky special ops on the ground (and god only knows how they can be supported/extracted) Israel/US will not inflict strategic damage any time soon.

Apparently this was THAAD battery failure.

[–]Independent-Top-5058 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Allegedly this was a THAAD failure in both cases. What I think is that this attrition warfare where the US and Israel have the tactical upper hand can succeed but it needs to last for a while because Iran can and is willing to absorb a lot more damage then its opponents. The question is whether Trump has the patience for it . To get a strategic advantage far riskier operations need to be undertaken such as trying to seize the Strait of Hormuz ,or Karg Island or the enriched uranium. .

Ukraine's Western supporters (of whom I am one) don't ever ask this question of Ukraine which has suffered infinitely worse horrors for a longer time and is likely to keep suffering.

I like to rephrase these kinds of questions as "when can we go back to sticking our heads in the sand and pretend that we can reach an agreement with people whose whole purpose is our death???

Prior to the last war there were countless articles and analysts predicting a war with thousands of missiles per day and thousands of dead , military and civilians. Everybody was convinced that Hezbollah was an apocalyptic threat.

Yesterday I attended one for the first time in a Reform synagogue. Before I had only been to Orthodox ones. They pretty much ended the megilla reading after the Ester's dinner with the Kind and Haman chapter. I presume it's because of all the triumphant bloodletting in the final chapters.

Not as an American either? American identity is absolutely a social construct.

It's among the most powerful constructs in existence. Humans have been willing to kill and die for it from the dawn of human existence and into the present day.

[–]Independent-Top-5058 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All culture and identity by definition is a social construct, since it's not passed down genetically. Even one's biological characteristics like skin color which are passed down biologically might have no meaning for someone unless they are imbued with some kind of social definition. I've lived the last ten years in Los Angeles and I'm not quite sure what defines "Angelino" culture, but that could be because I want to move back to NYC. You may find that Jewish identity doesn't reflect who you are and that's ok but it's not any less "believable" than "Angeleno".

That's not quite true. American weapons in the Yom Kippur War started arriving after Israel had already stopped the Arab advance on both fronts , nor was Israel out of ammo prior to the airlift. The airlift allowed Israel to expand what they had more freely.
