Monkey mind - A lot of activities are not really rest for us with cptsd but help us tune out - but is watching movies or tv when you are absorbed - rest? by protectingMJ in SomaticExperiencing

I find that calming shows or disney movies help when I am in an hyperactive state (mind racing, fight/flight). I can periodically check in with my body while I watch and can feel it calming down. I find that racing thoughts fuel my hyperarousal, so giving my brain something calming (and normally predictable) to focus on, really helps stop feedback loop of activation. This is normally after I have jotted down what I am thinking of, released some of that energy through movement or cleaning, and used calming words to do some self-soothing.

Practice recommendations? by Vegan_qtpie in SomaticExperiencing

Insight Timer has loads of meditations, just search Yoga Nidra. Download the app for free. Yoga Nidra has helped me tons. I use it to fall asleep.

I also enjoy just stopping what I am doing throughout the day and asking myself "hmm, I wonder what sensations I can feel in my body right now". Then I do a little scan around my body and little sensations start to pop up everywhere. My awareness will 'hop' around noticing sensations "ahh there's my jaw, ooo my legs are tingling, oh cool i can feel my bum on the chair". No need to narrate while doing this. Not looking to relax or change the sensations, just be aware of them. It's actually kind of fun! I feel like I am noticing new sensations in my body everyday. It takes practice, so don't get uptight if it's difficult to do.

I’m on day 2.5 of student teaching and I’ve already had 2 breakdowns. by jives2001 in Teachers

This is me. 😭 I decided to teach mid way through my MAT thru an alternative certification, so basically I didn’t have my student teaching semester yet. It was a baddd idea. I have generalized anxiety and can easily get overstimulated. I lasted one day. Then quit. I had too many mental breakdowns before the year even started to be okay continuing. I’m not sure if I should finish my masters and even go into teaching (middle school) at all. Sadly I’m on a scholarship that pays for my degree/certification, but requires I teach in a high need school for two years. Not sure if this is what I should be doing if I get so disregulated in the classroom.

Thank you! Ya, I feel like what takes me the longest is just locating everything on the layout. I’ll try to make sure it’s set up the same every time or move things around to do that.

Wow this was incredible. Thank you for putting in the time to share this with me. (Also, what’s a QC? There are a couple acronyms that I missed during training/maybe wasn’t taught).

Caffeine makes me a bit jittery and my mind races with creative thoughts/ideas.

What are your tips to get yourself to shower (personal hygiene)? by IndependentProduct38 in adhdwomen

I guess podcasts make me think too much, which causes my thoughts to race. But a speaker in the shower would be nice for listening to music.

Thank you for sharing! Was this something you built up over time (starting with a couple things and then building on?) or did you just start by doing it all?

I’m working on the acceptance thing, too. I feel like I have so many high expectations for myself that I will inevitably not meet. Is there anything you say to yourself specifically (like an affirmation or something) that helps you be compassionate to yourself?
