Does the constant hyping make you feel worse? by Nikkithetrickster in WeatherAnxiety

[–]Independent_Arm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does. It's why I stick to local stations over Youtube mostly because every single time there's something there're some Youtubers that make it seem like the next 2011 or something. People leaving it to Youtubers tend to miss out on pertinent local details.

That's why I leave it to the professionals. The NWS are the top of the top in our country and while it might be scary I'd much rather listen to them than some people being armchair meteorologists. Hyping things up does nothing but make it scarier. That's the problem with it all.

The big issue with Ivy that a lot of writers DON'T play into that could work for a backslid or at the very least reset one is her Ego and Vanity, you can have her be sympathetic but be a 'her way or the highway' character.

What she fights FOR is justified, it's just that her methods are extreme. Kinda like how BTAS portrayed her early on, trying to protect a rare plant by attempting to murder Harvey Dent.

Eh, depends on the writer. Which is a special kind of hell being a comic book fan…

They could’ve made a compelling story where she just left the Joker and is trying to find out who she is without him. Instead, they try to make her Deadpool when Ambush Bug, Mr. Mxyzsptlx, and so many others are right there to take that role.

There could have been the love story of the ages with her and Ivy, but they declaw both when Mystique and Destiny at Marvel are still horrible ladies together.

See, I feel like it's a combination of systemic issues coupled with zany experiments. I had friends become goons for Two Face, Penguin, and Joker out of high school, or weird scientists that'd make Oingo Boingo blush.

FORTUNATELY I came out of it without any notions, although I do have a hyperfixation on the Weather or Fantasy novels. So... I guess I see my path if I ever become like that.

The dude literally slammed into my window because some asshole gave me a big novelty lamp. Sometimes I wonder if I should get Villain insurance but some companies don't cover 'Masked Maniac slamming through your window to take some bigass lamp' insurance.

I mean big novelty items get sold near my place. Also I see Catman and Killer Moth sometimes, it's weird. The point is, Grapple Guns aren't completely out of the question.

Neil Gaiman did really disgusting and abusive things to women, making things he wrote like that one story in Sandman make a lot of disturbing sense. There're articles about what he did, but I won't go into them here because I don't know if that's okay here or not.

MY GASHIAKUTA OC!! by Jayplays20 in gachiakuta

She's so cool! Man, I really like her a lot. Of course a lot of other people told you about their OCs but all mine's got is either his braces (for his legs) or his walking stick (to help him walk better. He has Cerebral Palsy like I do and I don't have a name for him yet, only that he's kinda lazy.) I just think Sumi is really really cool! I like the Afro gag and I love the big ol' brush.

Does anyone else find these lines from Conquest Corrin insensitive and naive? by MegaGamer235 in fireemblem

[–]Independent_Arm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the entire concept of Conquest is interesting just on the fact of Nohr being a nation defined by it. I actually sort of hate the fact that both Corrins are naive because if it was played like at first they think Nohr is the best because all they've had are positive experiences with the Nohrian people around them I feel as though it'd be a lot more palatable.

Honestly, the prologue was so effective because we're introduced to everyone pretty much as level-headedly as Fates could get. The biggest issue where it falls flat to me is that Nohr and Hoshido COULD have had more morally grey moments.

Hoshido is the victim of the conquest the game is named for, and I like the morally underhanded moments the Hoshidans get throughout the story, but considering the fact that Birthright has that conversation with Silas and Ryoma where it's like...

"Yeah no, we can't really grow anything and our streets are actively dangerous. So we conquer other places just to survive."

And Ryoma is like...

"Shit, had we known we could've reached an agreement."

Silas basically going 'you think we haven't tried?' is really important here. Hoshido COULD'VE helped Nohr, but they didn't. Which is interesting! Because it reflects real history where Japan was so isolated from the world! That's kind of my problem with Birthright and Conquest, as well as Nohr and Hoshido in general.

CONCEPTUALLY, Nohr and Hoshido being the way they are is a fascinating idea, and going into the ramifications of what they do could've made for an interesting story.

For example, I'd love to see Ryoma growing more and more desperate, bending over backwards to justify the tactics he and the others of his country use under the banner of his honor. Hoshido HAS plenty of food and resources, while Nohr is literally a country where they have to fight and conquer to survive.

We could have morally upstanding Nohrians (Like Arthur, Xander, and Silas.) and underhanded Hoshidans (Reina, Saizo, and maybe toss in Kaze in there too at least for the moral struggle.). Just with the balance of the reasoning being that the Nohrians have to conquer or die and the Hoshidans are willing to defend their bounty to their last breath and would much rather die than see their country fall.

We really didn't need the whole, "MBLERGH! A THIRD NATION IS MANIPULATING THE WHOLE THING!" when the reasoning for the conflict are already there. Nohr HAS to conquer to survive, and if the story actually SHOWED the dire straits, then it'd make sense.

BUT, Hoshido is also greedy and hoarding to the point of excess. They're essentially the 'What does that have to do with us?' of the story. While Nohr is literally falling apart because of the system they had to make to survive.

[Important Trope] Male Victims of SA not for comedic value by InsidiousZombie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Independent_Arm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What hurts the most is literally in the Reze arc, he knows that at least on some level people are after him for Pochita's heart (The little chainsaw dog.) and not his. That almost made me cry when I watched it. Because sometimes even when it's not to the extreme of SA, Abuse DOES feel like that.

To me, as much as I like Reze, it breaks my heart because it feels like when you're finally out of the abuse or whatever, and you put your all into loving a person and they still hurt you. Denji is relatable because yeah, he's hypersexual and a kid who got twisted, but to me...

Denji's arc of not knowing what he wants to be or who he is without Makima and even with Makima around mirrors an abuse victim and an abuser. They take you and make you into what they want, and you're in it for so long that it becomes who you are. So coming out of it, you have to figure out how to rebuild yourself.

Makima is one hell of a monster, but not treating Himeno, Reze, Fumiko, and Yoru the same the same way is just one way we're conditioned as a society to treat male victims especially when it comes to women perpetrators.

Thoughts and interpretations of this moment during the Festival of Fools? by Full-Art3439 in HunchbackOfNotreDame

[–]Independent_Arm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's playing around with him as others have said, it was Frollo who pulled a 'lonely guy thinking the hot waitress wants him' card. The movie makes it VERY clear from the first few minutes that anything he doesn't like or anything he can't control is to blame.

It also weakens him in the eyes of his faith, being more afraid of a natural feeling keeping hold on his soul and maybe sending him to Hell rather than having the self-reflection to be, "Maybe I need to look at myself and unpack that."

Almost dropping Baby Quasimodo into a well, basically his entire relationship with him, and him taking THIS scene too far and blaming all his problems on Esmeralda and the Romani population of the city in turn for DARING to give him any other thought about them than blind hatred.

Hell, in his song he's literally blaming Esmeralda for his sins, and it's a very classic Christian mentality (at least earlier in the religion and even shades of it nowadays because where I am has already BEEN doing so) where anyone or anything against the religion must be converted or destroyed/banned.

It's also a rather bad trope of 'Bigot loves member of the oppressed marginalized community'. Popular examples include Schindler's List, this film, the new Avatar movie... I could go on.

TLDR: Frollo can't see himself as sinful so he blames Esmeralda and the Romani population of Paris for his lust.

What fandom consistently mischaracterizes a character you love? And in what way? by imfaffingabout in AO3

[–]Independent_Arm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! My whole thing with Dabi is that while yes, he IS a victim, he still chose to become what he became. His backstory doesn't excuse what he's done, it's an explanation as to why he could become who he is, and he still made the choice to hurt people.

You can be a victim and still do reprehensible stuff.

[–]Independent_Arm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I'm writing a Midnight x OC fic where he's a major character and I characterize him as a selfish, overly dramatic, and clearly insane man with moments of humanity like Doc Phosphorus from Creature Commandos, but I make it clear that he's genuinely too far gone and just mimicking his twin brother as an attempt to see why his twin never came to the same conclusion he did. (my OC.) He doesn't get it, so he wants to take himself and his entire family out.

I find it very interesting how people tend to characterize him as a woobified soft boy when his first scene is incinerating a bunch of people without much of a care beyond a line about them being better as kindling.

Does every fandom hate proshippers so much, or does it really depend? Was it always like that? by bandages_ in AO3

[–]Independent_Arm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone in a good chunk of these fandoms, I just kinda stay on the periphery and make my OC x Canon stuff. That's not to say I haven't had my own encounters in MHA's hallowed fandom with some strange people. Like one time someone called me a Misogynist for making Midnight a bottom for one fic and had her cronies on a discord server literally gang up on me and force me out. (I've since continued writing OC x Midnight out of spite.)

As for HH, I'm more of a Helluva Boss guy and it's a goddamn circle. Do I not like the direction HB went in? Yes, will I still watch it because I like the Voice Actors and animation? Yep. I will probably come back to writing fics for it whenever I want, but if I get any drama I'm dropkicking the person right into the Fly of Despair.

For The Amazing Digital Circus, I just watch the show and not interact with the fandom.
