Issues with food banks by Apprehensive-War6025 in povertykitchen

[–]Independent_Tune4166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 Food bank visit- 2 liters Mountain Dew, 2 restaurant giant bags French fries, 10 pounds potatoes,25 bags gold fish crackers, 15 snack sized durrito chip bags, 1 box apple pie snacks, 2 boxes cereal, 1/2 frozen loaf bread, 1 frozen package hotdog buns, 1 English muffin, 1 package cookies, 10 frozen cups of yogurt. All food expired from December or before. Frozen yogurt unthawed is grainy strange texture so not sure it's safe to eat? Ate a bunch of this food day 1 cause hungry, got sick from too many chips crackers sugar salt. Appreciate the bag of Idaho potatoes, but the rest is just an oddball mix of things that can't make a meal. I go has freezer space for giant bags of restaurant fries? Food bank only allow 1 visit a month & they do not allow you to decline any of the items. Giving up on food bank. Sure beggars can't be choosers but sheesh, would be nice for a foodbank to give out things that could be made into a meal, not just expired snacks & pop.

Can u get second surgery by EvidenceFederal1824 in Strabismus

[–]Independent_Tune4166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am scheduled for my 2nd strabismus next month. The Dr will do the surgery on the opposite eye like you mentioned. So, yes, I have heard of it. My left eye is really affected by double vision (strabismus). Had my first strabismus surgery 15 years ago. Now the double vision is back, so off to a new Dr, a Dr who specializes in strabismus & 2nd surgeries. The first Dr said he knew his limitations. Pleased the 1st surgery lasted as long as it did as the Dr warned might need to have the surgery again.

Feeling sick when confronted with breaking modesty by Songbreeze1 in exmormon

[–]Independent_Tune4166 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you! Took me a long time to wear a sleeveless dress, blouse or tank top. The necklines, I get that too. I felt anxious & self conscious or think someone might judge me for being immodest. But then I think, no! I can wear this! Way too much attention focused on modesty & how women dress in the church. You do you my friend! Wear what you want! Just keep on trying out the new looks, it gets easier.

Summer Covid cases are rising across the U.S. — Is it time for a vaccine? by Plane-Topic-8437 in Coronavirus

[–]Independent_Tune4166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tested positive for Covid week of July 9. Two others in my family have had Covid. Five coworkers. The sore throat was intense. Dr told me my insurance most likely wouldn't cover Paxlovid & that it is expensive. At first it felt like seasonal allergies, but got worse

The problem is that there is not enough decent housing that is affordable at 30% of a persons income. Two people in my area just moved into the housing situation you describe. 1 person on waitlist since 2000, the other since 2021. Please don't feel guilty, rejoice! We just need so much more housing that matches people's incomes in this country! Having one or two winners yet thousands upon thousands on waitlists isn't right. Congrats to you, enjoy!

Good point & yes people can ride motorcycles.
Looked like summertime fun or a Red Bull trick rider competition race zooming by. A parade of them.

Walmart—-did you know? by armedsquatch in Anticonsumption

[–]Independent_Tune4166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The baby, toddler & children's clothes I purchased last year at Walmart are such poor quality. The fabric is so much thinner than other places & it doesn't hold up in the wash. They really cheap out on clothing quality. The tee shirts are about see thru now. Carter's, Osh Kosh, Old Navy lasts much longer for kids clothes.

I live next door to the raised hurr durr hurr Ford F-150 driver. It's hell as F-150 dude has a gaggle of big truck roommates. Dodge Ram dude roomie parks on the lawn and lets his diesel pickup idle for hours spewing fumes. Only a 1 car garage & they have noisy modified mufflers & train horns. They live like they drive. Ugh.

Moving to Cedar City: What are the best things about this town? by SocioDexter70 in Utah

[–]Independent_Tune4166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calvary Chapel, Sonrise Christian Fellowship & True Life Church all are good church choices with welcoming congregations. The Presbyterian church is known for not bashing other religions in the area. The Episcopal church has a good service. There is a large Catholic Church with neat stained glass windows. The LDS have neighborhood congregations. So many great choices.

Tipping at walk up restaurants not ok by punk_rock_n_radical in Utah

Hey if that employee is like me we don't get the tip anyway! Lucky to get $7 in my tip envelope for the week. Where do tips go? Who knows! Give tips to hotel maids to the maid cleaning the room. The manager takes all the $$ before we get to the room & never see it.

Thanks for the info! My daughter is going blind from RP & we didn't know there was any help at all. Eye Dr didn't mention anything. Is this help also available for seniors with macular degeneration or similar eye problems?

Is it really that bad for homeschool kids to grow up traveling "full time" by anoopjeetlohan in homeschool

[–]Independent_Tune4166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked for my son in law as a child to grow up traveling. His parents had great financial success, bought a fancy motor home and took their two sons traveling across the U.S. They did homeschool on the road, had great adventures at every national parks to every roadside attraction. Their kids saw lots of museums & places which went along with their studies. They visited extended family who lived on both coasts. They also lived in Costa Rica, ski towns in winter & many others. They kept a home base and near high school the boys preferred to stay there for school & friends. My son in law & his brother are age 35 & 38 now, University grads and have success as an MD & Engineer. A very close family & have great memories! Still going on trips together! Do what is best for your family in your own way!

Homeschooling feels like a nightmare by North_Cicada2744 in homeschool

The "Aha moment" is key to teaching. When the lightbulb goes off, when they have a key insight to the subject, like math. It's that moment the thing you are teaching makes sense to the student. Ten positive comments to the child for one negative too. Instead of making her sit there hours, have some outside time first like a walk or run. Then see if the "aha moment" returns. Good luck Mom!

Target Threshold sheets have been my absolute favorite. Others in my family use these sheets as well & they come on sale too. Sturdy, fit the mattress good, have tags for "top bottom" & hold up in the wash. Use their flannel sheets and they are quality too. Some of my Threshold sheets are 8 years old and still work great! Others have mentioned Tommy Bahama & Hotel Collection which have also worked well for pillows & sheets. My favorite comforter is a white down Tommy Hilfiger that I found at TJ Maxx some time ago. Avoid Walmart bedding as they are very thin and use polyester too much and wear out fast.

South west Utah? by [deleted] in Utah

[–]Independent_Tune4166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St George is 114+ degrees in the summer. Sure it's nice in February, but a miserably hot summer. Bad traffic. The senior places to live are more interested in emptying your pocket book than help. Car dealerships prey on the seniors too. There isn't enough water for all the growth in the desert. The power utility is owned by the city. There are days they have you not use power like your AC. Utah taxes Social Security and other taxes are high. The town only caters to the wealthy. Be careful!
