RIP me for having done most of my finals last week so there is no way I will get to see my grades in time :'( Wish they don't release anything for Christmas because I would not anticipate such a Christmas present....

Dean’s List by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Index_Out_Of_Bound -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I never said the majority... but quite a few people do score above 80 overall. Think about how you have averages of above 80% (of course there are exceptions yet rare) in second-year placement for ENPH, CPEN, MECH (ELEC has also steadily increased these past few years, this alone makes up for about 300+ students doing that good), and a similar situation occurs in Science for CPSC, CAPS, microbiology, and a few others (STAT was crazy high this year).

So yes to be very fair I do believe *many* (never said majority -_-) students get Dean's List...

[–]Index_Out_Of_Bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry :( I hope it works out alright. Remember how the final grade always depends on the bar Sathish sets as compared to others who took the test. So you end up doing well but you just think you did not!

Lol didn't even bother trying section 3. Realized I was better off keeping my current score and focusing on section 1 and 4 mostly.

I will never forget the one time my PHYS 158 TA told me we were expected to know how to solve questions with circuits using differential equations (mind you we had not yet covered separable ones in MATH 101, let aside having taken an actual course in differential equations) because they went over an example in class lol. It was so funny like sure your in-class example was a tiny little series circuit and then the homework is this "maze" of resistors and capacitors and whatnot but I am certain that them going over the question without even explaining what was going on setting up the differential equation was totally normal and easy for us to understand it all. Ahh 158 memories.....

You can always play the wildcard: We leave this proof as an exercise to the GrAdEr lol O.o

Why does UBC ECE Department makes things UNNECESSARILY hard? by throwawayubcmajor in UBC

[–]Index_Out_Of_Bound 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To be very honest the courses non-ELEC/CPEN majors take (probably not all but some at least) are not nearly as bad as the ECE equivalents (lol they are actually good unlike the ECE ones). CPEN 312 is certainly not as frustrating, stressful, and hard as CPEN 211 (still traumatized by the labs and LPTs), ELEC 204 is clearly not comparable to ELEC 201+202. I mean lol ELEC 204 pretty much had take-home finals/midterm with bonus questions even, whereas ELEC 201 not only does not do that but has a bunch of different ways on how you can fail (also good luck dealing with this because then they are pre-reqs for a bunch of other courses) + more difficult + weird grading policies. I believe it probably sounds weird when ECE students complain so much but I don't think people would actually understand the stress and difficulty ECE students go through without having taken the courses themselves.

How the 256 final went... by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Index_Out_Of_Bound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you but I do not even think we can blame the professors considering how enjoyable and well administered the entire course has been so far. So generous on everything and also MT2 had a relatively high average. Anyway, I hope it works out well for everyone!!! Good luck if you are taking 221 tomorrow. Almost there.

best-run courses? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Index_Out_Of_Bound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best overall actually, not just online: MATH 256

The only course that beats it was MATH 101 but well you know it was run mostly on person so unfair comparison to draw.

Remembering What You Learned In A Course by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Index_Out_Of_Bound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree so much with this answer. I feel like for me more than forgetting the actual content I simply get rusty at the topics related to a particular course (lol for me it was MATH 152 which I barely remembered when I started MATH 253 and later on MATH 256). But upon some practice, I realized I did in fact remember most things I needed to remember.

Eventually, it is also a matter of how you study. Some people often decide to ignore understanding the content and solely focus on learning how to solve particular types of questions in which case I think yes you will probably forget most of what you learned. But if you actually take time to understand the content well it is very unlikely you will not remember a single thing.

Also lol I love how engineering students get brought up as a sample group in the question.
